"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Hey Randy! Thought you'd like to see an old friend!

Folks, Randy sent me this "rescue" Case some time ago. I brought it with me to a wedding back east, and have been carrying it ever since! Old knives (and knife collectors!) get patched up, and keep on keepin' on! See you out here soon!!

Hey all I've had a pretty rough time lately and have all of you. I am spending my first day in a nursing home and it sucks. Thanks to everyone for the concern. I have a large splint on my right arm and holding this tab!et while typing very hard so I won't be posting much for a while.
Randy: I'm guessing, or hoping you're in the Nursing home for rehabilitation? It's tough, but hang in there buddy. Let's hope it gets a little better every day!

One of my best friends passed away in hospice on Sunday. She had been sick for a while. I found our work class picture Tuesday, I was done for the rest of the day after that.

This morning I heard on the radio getting off the expressway that Chris Cornell had passed. That might have been what pushed me over. Just being upset about my buddy, and hearing the singer for my favorite band, Soundgarden, had passed (possible suicide), I just couldn't stop thinking about my buddy.

Please pray for her family, her daughter is understandably taking it hard. She had a passel of grandkids that she doted on too.

Man, my day is shot. I have a meeting in the next few minutes, and I feel exhausted.

I had a conversation with Glenn Trowbridge (glennbad) and he had a great idea to a bunch of us sending Randy Get Well cards. Great idea Glenn.
If anyone would like to send Randy a Get Well card, please feel free to PM me for his info. I'm sure he would like to hear from us to lift his spirits.

Sorry to hear that Dan. Prayers sent and hang in there man.

If any of you are on Instagram, Robert Klaas knives has a great page showing some cool pics of their history and their knives. It is a great company that makes some great knives, unfortunately, we don't see many for sale in the US. IG is @robert_klaas

Good thing about the Lounge is that it gives room for serious and profound posts and the lighter side too, both are necessary for the human experience.

Here's an instance of the latter.

We all know and have been told that "Don't use your knife as a pry-bar it's bound to end up badly" Yeah well, nature being what it is we don't always heed sage words. :D This ended badly alright but not as you might expect! I have had a cheap but very tough Timex watch for years, it keeps excellent time is unfashionably small and weighs nothing. It is just the thing to wear when working as it's tough, it also has this dayglo type feature that illuminates it at night-I like to know the time when insomnia strikes in the dark. All in all a great little item and a faithful servant. For some insane reason I began to fiddle with it the other day in my arm chair, not content with worrying a knife in the hand I decided to combine watch and knife. I started thinking what a ripoff these battery changes are at the jewellers, 15 Euro a go. I could do it myself so let's just look at the watch's inwards, get a pen blade under that back! bit tricky actually, it felt tight but the pry-bar instinct was with me, a loud snap! My Black Box Swell Centre Pen was OK! the sound was the pop of the back being parted from the frame, some vacuum I supposed. Had a look inside, all simple you just get the right battery etc. Now just put the back back. It was downhill from here. I couldn't squeeze it back despite using all my strength. Let's check Youtube!

Somebody there had all the info, use a pill bottle cap some padding and stand on it bingo! Tried it with some trepidation, no. Tried several times and even my considerable 80 kg weight (176 pounds?) enough anyway, would not do it. Looks like a humiliating visit to the jeweller's (rather standoffish woman there looking down on cheap watches type!) with all the bits taped together. But no way! another video claimed if you have a vice then that's the real tool for the job. I have a fine old vice out in the shed, let's go! Plenty of cardboard and cloth padding, turn it carefully...still nothing. Tried 3 times and the fourth, CRUNCH! The back was bowed and the crystal and the watch mashed. My poor old watch a total wreck Aaarghhh! Moral, yes do not use your knife as a pry-bar as it leads to the end of everything! Also, Youtube is not all it seems...;)

Mournfully, Will

RIP Timex Will :( We've all been there in one way or another I guess ;)

I have managed to change a watch battery in such a way as to break the water-proofing gasket and leave have of it wagging out the side of the case.

Sorry to hear about the demise of your Timex, Will. :( As I read about each decision you made in the adventure, I found myself thinking, "I have a bad feeling about this." I was especially shocked when your risked your beloved Black Box Swell Center Pen knife to open the back of the watch ; at least the knife came out of the ordeal OK.

oooh if only id caught this in time, couldve gave you some tips! good thing is, timexes arent too spendy to replace

Thanks mr.k Timex are cheap and OK for using outdoors where they can take a knock. My own stupidity, but I'm seldom one to learn such lessons!:D

Maybe I should invest in Timex shares!! - Or a battery-changing business!!??
Seems like there is still a future in these things!!:)

I need an IT person to help me sort this place out. It shouldn't be so difficult!

Meanwhile, I just checked in to a hotel in Ottawa, Ont, for my niece's wedding. While in town I am going to go hunting in antique and other likely stores. My goal is to bring back an artifact or two (dare I say knife or two? Don't want to jinx!) in between festivities, from Canada's Capitol!
Will post my catch here, if any!

I did find a couple of items in Ottawa, which have inspired an idea for a thread!! Look for a Plowman!!:D

they charge almost $10-$15 in some places for this kind of service. batteries they get whole sale im sure, but not bad for about three minutes of work. its the tools that get ya. on a whim once, i bought a watch case press from amazon because in the old days Id used to just press it against my table and hope i can create enough pressure to close those case backs. actually ruined one of my first pocketwatches that way. was so curious on opening the case back that I wasnt able to get it back on. ended up breaking that thing sadly :(

Would Sir like the watch to be sent away for hydrostatic testing ?
Sirs watch will no longer be guaranteed water resistant if Sir does not want to cough up more than Sirs watch is worth anyway for the test.

errrrrrrrrrrrr...nothanks.
Next watch must be accessible with mini stilsons .

I like a Timex Expedition with Indiglo and a black or OD dial. They usually run for a couple of years on the original battery. I have been able to get the backs off by misusing a small screwdriver instead of a knife blade, and always succeeded in getting them back together with a new battery.

Where I run into trouble is trying to get the watch to start up on the new battery. Used to be able to do that, but not with the last three or four watches. I start out hopeful, but end up replacing the watch. For thirty or forty bucks, I don't mind buying a new watch every couple of years.

Timex 'times' failure of the battery and innards to coincide perfectly now. Hadn't you heard? :p
