Great picture leghog. My wife and I just celebrated our 38th two days ago on the 13th. We are both fortunate men we not only found very pretty ladies but they were also our soul mates. Those two gals must have the patience of Job to have put up with the two of us for so many years. :D Here is Ann and I with our two granddaughters we raised at Kinzie's graduation last year.

Same to you Randy!

And to you too Bob! Closing in on my 30th. Need to do something special for Beth. Thinking about one of those train trips now.

The better part of discretion is to always address others here by the name(s) they themselves use in their posts. I greatly appreciate Jack's thoughtful circumspection:

I think it is rife here... (on some forums it's a bannable 'offence'!), someone sees a name being used and does the same, and many posters are perfectly happy to be called by their first names, even by their full names, but some aren't, even the ones who ignore the faux pas.

When we are all such good friends here, and swap PMs, and letters, and phonecalls, it can sometimes be easy to forget. Having had the subject raised by others, I prefer to err on the side of caution myself, even where others might name a poster.

Many posters add their first name to their sig line after a while, which helps to avoid confusion, while a few sign some of their posts - and I think once they have done that once, it is fair to be able to address them by their name.

However, the names of some posters are only known here because others have used their name, rather than them using it themselves. pertinux pertinux , for example, has only ever signed her posts 'P', so while we are good friends, I would only address her in the way she prefers to be addressed (hope you'll excuse my using you as an example P ) when posting on the forum :)

I agree with everything Jack has so eloquently written here-- including that genuine friendship, in-person meetings, and the sense of camaraderie fostered here can sometimes obscure the reality that in an online forum on the World Wide Web, it is always best to address others in the manner in which they (re)present themselves.

[All legitimately warm fuzzies aside, we are on no one's porch, and not an iota of our discussions here are private. Every word is imminently, eminently searchable, and we are wise to heed the public cues others give us.]

[[As Jack astutely picked up on early and describes above, I very intentionally do not use my name on this forum, nor within any other online venue for that matter. My reasons range from the practical to the Quixotic (the latter including the pretense of privacy), but all fall under the realm of Discretion.]]

Well said, Jack, all of it!

Are you making your uploaded pictures Public or Private? If they are Public, then everyone and their second cousin, thrice removed can see your pictures and due to how Imgur can be used as a form of Social Media, content can be voted up and/or down depending on the viewer's opinion. This is what creates your "Rating".

Every upload I make to Imgur is set to Private, which you can do at the moment of your upload. As a result, it has no effect on my "Rating" or "Reputation" within Imgur's platform because nobody else can freely peruse my content. As such, I can completely ignore that function of Imgur's platform, which I find to be tiresome anyway. I just use it strictly to upload pictures to their hosting service so I can share that content here.

This.

My first couple images on Imgur were public (seems to be the default), but after a couple weird comments from random strangers, I figured out how to post them privately. Works great for hosting (and only hosting) when you post images privately.

Thanks a lot P, I know this issue has been discussed here in the Lounge before  Friendliness is infectious here, but as you rightly say, every word posted here is public and searchable. I find those posters who choose to post anonymously, or under pseudonyms, just as friendly as the rest of us mugs. The important thing for me is respecting the privacy of others, and I think the default etiquette should be to address forum users either by their username, or by the name with which they sign their posts :)

I once came across a discussion about one of my knives on a lesser (and now defunct) knife forum, and called in to post a comment, only to have someone churlishly remark that I had only come across the discussion because I had done a Google search on my own name! Like I'd do that, and have to wade through 600 pages about some little fat bloke in Hollywood!  :D

Thanks. I had no idea.
Which is how the webweevils get innocents like me.

I want to be Red Dragon Leader. Or White Wyvern Wizard. Not, I think, Peppermint Flying Firepot. (Being West Saxon and Welsh.)
I guess Jer has fewer letters, though.

For the sake of privacy - a concept the digital-age abhors - I'm thinking of changing my name to a low profile will.i.am :D:cool:

LOL :D I thought about it many years ago, when I used to regularly get VMs and emails from teenagers in General asking if I could introduce them to Sara Michelle Geller, etc

I knew a bloke years ago who bought a small canal boat named 'Lily Jane'. He was moored in London, and the first time I went to visit him, he wasn't on the boat, so I asked a feller on a neighbouring boat if he knew where Nick was? He looked at me blankly for a second, then said, "Oh, Lily Jane, he's in the pub." Seems the canal community is pretty anonymous too, and people tend to refer to each other by the names of their boats. Nick wasn't too happy about it, and swore he was going to rename his tiny Victorian Upper River Cruiser 'Turbo Thrust' or something! :D

Happy Birthday, Dave!
Happy Birthday, Charlie!

And how!!!! I'm so glad you guys are 'round. :D

So it's "P(...)", no matter how many warm and fuzzy types call you "[Sibilant] ...".
I think I can remember that.

If not, no worries-- truly. I think the horse left the barn long ago when it comes to my name,* and I of course cannot control what anyone else does. Nor is it my intention to make anyone feel bad!

*Up to a point. I don't believe my last name has been included anywhere here, yet. SO BE IT. Please.

I wouldn't have brought it up myself, but now that Jack Black Jack Black has cited me as an apt example, I am glad to encourage care when it comes to the use of names in our online interactions.

The point, going forward, is to simply use discretion, heeding others' online representations of themselves, their family members, etc.

Sorry P  Thanks for posting so thoughtfully and positively once summonsed! :) I know there are other members with stronger feelings about being 'outed', but you have a great deal of patience :) Very well put, as always, and nicely summed-up. I do feel it's important that if, for whatever reason a member here prefers to post anonymously/discreetly that wish is respected :)

Cool cartoon :D
