"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Maybe it was my whining about how expensive them traditionals are when I finally have them over here, but MnBlade got me great deal on a Chessnut Bone Handled CV Peanut. ...

Thanx a lot Mark:thumbup:

My pleasure. It really is a great looking knife. Let us know how it holds up.

Thanks for the kind words, y'all. It's definitely a shock, but we're better off than a lot of folks. I lost all my production knives and some that belonged to my dad, along with all our pictures, but we have a friend who lost his banjo that he'd had for 35 years.

James,

I do not stop here in the lounge often and just read your post. I am sorry to hear of the loss of your home and belonging.

Ken

Hello All

I've been lurking here for far too long without a proper introduction but I was shown this tonight and it needs to be shared with you all. Gotta love the name of the song. If anyone knows how to embed the video, please do your thing, but please watch it full screen with the volume up! Any guesses on what kind of knife?

Sweet video! Great old blues. It looks like a trapper to me.

Whew...well, in several clips you can see the bolster shows two blades, Im going to guess its either a Serpentine Jack, ...or ( because I cant see the other half...this gent being a Blues man, it could well be a Whittler!

I was reading about him and he spent much of his life in Texas as a tenant farmer and a couple years (56-58 Houston)in the lumber industry so maybe that helps narrow it down. It definitely has a shield.

Great video and song! Thank you for posting it. I love these old videos. :)

To me the knife looks like a two-blade serpentine jack --fitting for this song. I think only the pile side of the knife is showing in the video... I see the tip of a clip main blade and can't see much of the second blade... My guess is that the second blade is a short pen blade that's mostly covered by his hand.

Impressive performance, especially since his other hand is bandaged up.

I'm sad to report that my peanut ran into a job it couldn't handle today. It does not work well for cutting birthday cakes. However, it is a great zombie defense knife. I pulled it on a zombie the other day and the critter died laughing. It is also working extremely well as an office knife. I never thought I'd come around to Carl's point of view, but I think it's happening.

Edit: I have been corrected. A peanut makes a fine cake cutting knife. You just have to sit on the cake to thin it out a bit before you try to cut it. Thanks to my daughter who so graciously pointed that out to me.

I keep telling you...smaller portions!...;)

This could be a side benefit of a peanut for the weight watchers among us. A peanut would most definatly mean "smaller" portions! :D

You see; the advantages of a peanut are unlimited!

Carl.

But nuts are high in fat! :( so no peanuts for me...lol

PS. I still haven't found the right "peanut" for me, might get lucky one day and see one that screams out "buy me".

Spent the day on a farm yesterday riding and taking care of a friend's 4 horses and only carried a slip joint, even though it got used pretty heavily, it never even started to fold up on my fingers like it does for so many people who cut with the spine of the blade. ;)
I was carrying a stag EJ by Mike Zscherny.

Sure was a great day. Farm was beautiful 140 acres with several ponds and a couple of nice streams in the foothills. One of the best days I have had in a while and it was awesome. The best part is after two showers, some of the smells are still with me. It has been 35 years since I have done those types of chores and ridden that hard so the whole day was full of memories, beautiful weather and great views. Got home exhausted, dirty and happy as a lark.

What the heck am I doing living in a city? ;)

Ever since carrying a Case peanut on a daily basis, I've not been attacked by a single zombie. Coincidence? I think not!

-- Mark

obviously, since if you ever WERE attacked by a zombie while trying to defend yourself from a zombie attack ...well you wouldnt be here to type this would you ;)

but to be fair, since i started carrying my buck 309 i've discovered i have yet to be attacked by a terrorist or mugger or get lost in the woods either :p

Thanks for the kind words, folks. I'm doing okay with the loss of our stuff - I'm treating it as an opportunity to focus my collecting and pare down the amount of stuff that we have. Not that I could really pare it down any more, but I don't think I'll be replacing a lot of the stuff that's gone. We had literally thousands of books and thousands more CDs, but I realized that if I could remember what the CDs were, I probably didn't need them. My wife was having a harder time of it, but she has at least started to come around to my point of view.

I'm torn about including the pictures, because I don't want to bum y'all out, but they're interesting. If I've learned anything from all this, it's have good insurance.

As y'all can see, I have a box full of potential slip joint patterns, so if anyone needs a canoe or small trapper, let me know.

Hey man, at least you still have each other, the pets, and insurance. Whew, man, those pics are hard to look at. Can't imagine what you're going through (not just the knives).
