I need advice please :)

Yesterday, my little Canon Power Shot decided to refuse to come out and play. Shutter lens jammed and so I can't take pictures:( I got it 4 and a half years ago and it's been more than sufficient for my needs. At the time, supermarkets were selling off all Digi compacts as people only use phones or more sophisticated expensive large cameras. Neither suit or please me :D It cost me 40 Euro including all the stuff, case, memory card so it was a fantastic bargain. But now it seems I can't fix it or those unhelpful people in shops will want a huge fee etc etc.

Any fixes? I've tried repowering it from the computer, using a fully charged battery, holding down the zoom ring and shutter. Even gentle tapping, nothing will prompt it back to life so far...maybe compressed air in there ?

I have a smart work phone which I use as little as possible. I have NO interest in social media or being welded by the hand to a device, they don't interest me at all so I don't want a phone camera. Anyway, an i-Phone costs 700 Euro and will be useless, out of date and worthless in 3 years, sheer waste as I don't use it. I'm tight fisted here and photography has little attraction for me either so I'm not spending 300+ Euro on a digi camera that is bigger than a pocket size, no. I need to find a cache of pocket cameras NOS that nobody wants:cool:

Back to tripod and flashbulbs? Plate glass? Never liked the rigmarole of photography as a hobby:D:D:rolleyes:

The flash on my little Fujifilm no longer pops up, so I can relate.
Even a cheap phone has a camera these days, so you don't need to go I-mad. I haven't figured out yet how to get the pictures off my phone though.

I have that same problem. My cell phone is a flip phone provided by my employer. It looks just like the one in the pic below. It will take photos but the internet access is turned off.

I think I need some kind of USB cord to transfer the pics from my phone to a computer. Too much of a hassle for me but I'm not complaining because I never see a phone bill.

I use my Cannon camera for pics. It takes better pics than my phone does anyway.

I wish I knew how to help, but I don't. At least a new compact camera isn't as expensive as an iPhone!

What model is the phone? I bet a quick google search for a data transfer cable for that model would give you exactly what you needed. Probably isn't too expensive, either.

Thanks, Joshua. I don't see a data plate or model number on the phone itself but I still have the box for this phone at home which probably has the model number on it. In fact, the cable that I need might be in that box too. I'll have to take a look when I get home this afternoon.

A lot of the older phones take a generic cable size unlike all the newer phones which seem to only have proprietary sizes.

Those smaller size pocket friendly compact cameras are great in all aspects, except for 1. They never seem to last too long. I've had 3 in the last 10 years, so apparently the shelf life on them is the 3-5 year range. I've sort of grown into the habit of buying a new $150 camera every 3 years on Black Friday.

Thanks everybody. Man in the shop actually thought it could be a worn out battery, simply not enough power to open up the thing! Could be I suppose? No doubt batteries cost as much as a new camera...compact cameras are hard to find here now due to phones, but I like to keep things separate. I just hate all this awful WASTE in contemporary society, nothing is allowed to last or be fixed...the planet cannot handle this waste and pollution-world population is more than twice what it was when I was born...appalled.

If things were made with as much human craftsmanship and artistry rather than being sped down an assembly line of machines, I bet more people would be loathe to toss them in the trash. Chesterton was right: no inexpensive mass produced good or service can compare to the individual artisan or skilled professional.

Think of it not as phone with a camera but as a camera that can make and take phone calls ....or be silenced.
Can access the internet at the nearest McDonald's for free

Take photos and then post them on BF.
Play your fave tunes through your car stereo.
Remember the Dick Tracy cartoon with the two way wrist tv? I know I wanted one as a kid....hell I could stick my Samsung a8 in my shoe if I wanted to...and I wouldn't even need to dial...
However I have noticed that once broken digital technology devices are more expensive to mend than replace.

I've own a couple of pretty decent DX cameras, a Nikon D7000 and a Fujiflim X-T10. But to be honest I'm using iPhones more and more as the cameras in them become more sophisticated. I've grown tired of carrying a lot of equipment as I've gotten older. The key to excellent photos is good light and proper white balance, not the camera.

I was going to post this in "Recent Acquisitions", but I can't find it. Here are the best and worst of my recent NY haul.

Here's the worst. Forest Master, but apparently solid handles.

I've been a photographer for 50+ years both amateur and professional and in bad light my Samsung 8 Plus is crazy good. Nothing replaces equipment in the studio but for internet knife photos, minimalist is the way to go.

Could you buy a used smart-phone cheap and just use it as a camera? Get a cable to transfer photos to your computer, and you might not even need to pay for a data plan.

I too must reiterate the above. I have a considerable investment in digital Nikon equipment but I am finding it more and more difficult to improve on the results I can get with my iPhone.

That's because there is no money in it for the big corporations in the here and now. Gotta sell you the same thing over and over.

I don't own a mobile phone myself. I have a company-provided smart phone that I use. Long gone are the days when you have any time you can truly call your own in modern corporations.
