"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Looks very quiet and peaceful.
Michigan?
It's quite peaceful, except for the sound of motorized boat traffic. Annual Antique Wooden Boat Show this weekend, so there are quite a few vintage Chris Crafts with massive inboard engines parading through the area. Some guy checked in to the cottage behind us, and he has some kind of flat red fiberglass catamaran-type speedboat with a 300-hp outboard towering over the stern, and it really screams when he opens it up! I've always been a kayak guy, so the motor boats aren't really my cup of tea.

The photo I posted is taken from the deck of the cottage we're renting on the mainland of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, looking across to LaSalle Island, one of the off-shore islands (Les Cheneaux Islands) in northern Lake Huron. I used to love kayaking among the islands, but my back rebels at that activity for the past several years. Still a fantastic place to relax, though!

Complete change of subject but I am just coming off a particularly exhausting on-call week for my employer and finally had a chance to run out for some critical supplies (*cough* bourbon) and I am just starting to feel like myself again rather than an enslaved corporate drone. To those of you who made it to retirement and don't have to deal with that - my congratulations, brothers and sisters. I hope to join you in the bliss of self-determination some day.

Knife-wise, I used a Case 6347 Stockman to help with those pesky foil and wax seals they seem to think are reasonable for whiskey bottles.

Yes, it is too early in the day for a drink. No, I don't care. I was at 40 hours by noon on Thursday after a 62-hour week last week.

I hope the job responsibilities ease up for you for a while, John; sounds like an exhausting stretch you've gone through.

I officially retire on August 31. So far, trying to retire is hard work as I struggle to learn all kinds of unfamiliar stuff about Medicare, Social Security, retirement account distribution options, tax implications, mortality tables, income/budget/lifestyle adjustments, etc. I hope that once I get that all under control, it's not the sort of thing I have to spend a lot of time on in the future!
