Carothers and Guns

SDFK next to my S&W 460XVR. 460 mag round next to 9mm.
The revolver is pretty big and heavy, but it'll shoot 454 casull and 45 LC in addition to 460 mag, so it's pretty flexible. I think I probably still prefer 10mm though.
If we go to Alaska I'd probably carry this though.

Great knife and revolver. 454 and .460 are popular up here. I carried a .500 S&W 4ā€ for a while but just didn’t like the weight of it when hiking or fly fishing, and I like short barrels in a chest rig tucked out of the way while doing chores in the woods or carrying a pack. I like 329PD but it didn’t really like Buffalo Bore hard casts so I settled for 629’s and my 2 1/2ā€ Talo gets the most carry.

I was considering trading this for a different S&W. The 10.5 inch barrel is a little much. I got this in a trade, so I can't complain.

That handgun is enormous but I wouldn’t want to be a bear with that pointed at me.
Nothing wrong with that revolver that a buttstock and bipod can't fix!

I also would not want to be a bear with that pointed at me, but I kinda wonder if the pointing process involves a traversing and elevation mechanism.

That 460 makes more sense than the big revolver I bought.

My experience with the 6.5" 500 S&W is that there is so much recoil that it might as well be single action. I only tried my nuclear CFE-BLK / 440gr hard cast hand loads. That gun has not been fired in years. That powder miraculously maxes out the cartridge with just a 9mm pressure level from what I remember.

Even in Alaska I would stick with what I know and carry a G20 or even a G19 with penetrators. If you think you are a stronger guy and better at shooting... Good luck! That said there may be a place for the 6.5" 500 with a lighter load and a better comp / barrel weight. For handgun hunting it has a place either way. I somehow lost interest haha.

Put a 2 or 4x scope on that 460 and would have a great hunting set up!

It would work within 200-250 yards. I'd rather run a rifle though.

Luckily, you only need to hit one with something like that!

To me, the 460 mag makes more sense, too. You get less recoil than the 500, but the same muzzle energy.

I think the lever .500 S&W would be an awesome brush gun. The 460 is much more versatile handgun imho.

Agreed. BTW I bet your 4" 500 mag has less recoil than the 6.5" because of the real comp that comes on the 4 inch. I've just been speaking to the 6.5 which is wildly un shootable with the loads I used. Edit to add: the 6.5 half lug 500 was probably discontinued for good reason.

I have one of the 4" 500 S&W revolvers, and the recoil with full-power loads is really more than most people would want to experience.

The revolver is so large that it looks like a 'toon pistol from the Roger the Rabbit movie!

I wear a shooting glove with a gel-filled cushion in the palm area when shooting it.

I never shot any but mine so I have no experience with the others. I tell you what though- the muzzle/comp blast from the 4ā€ with Buffalo Bore 440 grain bullets when the sun is down is pretty impressive🤣

ā€˜Toon gun’- lol. True! It looks normal until you place it in your hand or next to a standard sized handgun. I didn’t mind shooting it as much as I just found it heavy and bulky to wear all the time in a Diamond D chest rig in areas where the whole idea was to be prepared. Not much sense in having a more effective brown bear handgun if it is in the raft while you are flyfishing. Very impressive gun, but I love my 629’s and the size/weight/recoil is very manageable.

Didn't you mention that you have to replicate the toys x 3 for the spawn? So you have at least two more tables like that?.... šŸ˜

Have you ever rec'd a Father of the Year award(s)?

Ok I am only going to leave these pics available for a short time just because I don't like it all out there. Yes I know once I post its out there but whatevs... This seems like a nice group of folks to share with. Here are some of my 3" S&W revolvers. Couple other lengths too.

I can't see the pic, but since you mentioned it, I have a 686-3 Plus incoming. Looking forward to getting it dirty.
