Carothers and Guns

Thank you for the great advice. I did grab some 220 gr Buffalo Boar and Grizzly flat nosed rounds…a box of target ammo too, of course. Went to 3 shops today and had zero luck on a chest rig. (Folks around here like to carry their sidearms in their panties.) 🤣Checking out Gunfighters Inc. ASAP. 👍🏼
If you want another load to try Underwood Ammo offers a few great hardcast and extreme penetrator loads that shoot great out of my revolvers and hit hard. They do offer 10MM also.

And I'm not sure if you can find one for that pistol in the time frame you need it in or if you prefer leather or kydex, but Diamond D Leather has a nice leather chest rig if you prefer it to kydex.

Take lots of pictures!

Much appreciated man. I’ll be lucky to have a week and a half to get acquainted with new pistol so my flan is to put 50 target rounds through it and 5 of each hardcast w/ the hotter loads. That’ll leave me w/ 2 mags for travel. When we get back home, it’s on. Never had a 10mm and pretty stoked to put her through the paces.

Pics? You bet. It’s gonna be a great time.

Regards

Word of advice from the Alaskan firearms enthusiasts is to be careful of the 220gr Hardcast rounds. I can't recall if it was specific to the G20 (in which case it might not affect you), or if they mentioned seeing it with all 10mm semi autos, but they said that they experienced FTFs with the 220gr, but not the 200gr.

Slightly different ogive and profile produced random malfunctions.

Right on. I’ll do some more diggin on the subject. Sure don’t wanna learn that lesson the wrong way.

The 200gr Underwood hardcasts are my choice, and I've never had an issue with them. But I would highly recommend putting in a higher poundage recoil spring than what comes with most stock pistols. I run a #20lb in my M&P.

Nice. Give us a range report, please. Shortly before Sig released the P320 in 10mm, I finally got sick of waiting for it after years of rumors, and I went with the M&P 10mm. This is my go-to hiking gun (I live in grizz country) and it's been excellent - I've got close to 800 rds through it at this point.

Where in AK are you going? I spent 13 seasons up there.

As for the best CPK to take, are you going to be hiking? If so, I'd say the FK2.
Nice piece !

Once I get some rounds through her, I’ll def report back. I’ll be tempted to call in sick for work the day the background check clears.

This trip is Anchorage. Our youngest is stationed at Elmendorf (sp?) In January, our second to the youngest transfers to Fairbanks. 2 great reasons to spend a lot more time up there !

This trip we’ll be hiking and sight seeing. Once I save up enough cheddar to take any of my 5 kids…hunting and fishing. 😛

FK2💯 Just got an OG FK1 in the mail today. Tough choice with the built in bottle opener 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺

Chest rig is the only way to go when you're hiking....and a thong. Gotta get that crack flossed while you're hiking! 😆
😂😂😂 Ur killin me smalls !!! I’m hunting for a chest rig for sure. Thong u say? Nope……I’m goin commando so the giant mosquitos have sumpin to wrassel with ! Lol !

Pretty sure that's a glock specific issue. I'm not a glock fan, but if I'm not mistaken, there's something about their barrels that have issues with those hardcast rounds and wad cutters, too.

I just watched a YouTube video where a guy was testing Buffalo Bore 220grn hard cast ammo in an Sig P320 X10. The mag wouldn’t take the 15th round so he removed it. Then the 2nd through 4th rounds rattled so he took them out. He then shot 5 test rounds.

Oddly, he had previously shot multiple mags of Underwood 220grn hard cast rounds w/ zero mag spring tension issues, misfeeds, or stovepiping. I now have or have orderred 3 different manufacturers 10mm 200 or 220grn and a box of Winchester 180grn target ammo. When I test in a couple weeks, I’ll chime in on what the X10 likes to eat. 😛

Good to know! My xdm eats whatever I put in it, but it doesn't have an optics cut

Yeah, you don't want to shoot lead bullets in a Glock - the barrels have polygonal rifling. It has the potential to build up lead residue in the barrel to the point of increasing pressures to dangerous levels. Combine that with a really high-pressure round like full power 10mm and....💥

Expect to feel a big different between the Win target ammo and those Underwood loads. If you're feeling slide slam with the Underwoods, I'd recommend going to a heavier recoil spring.

What's the benefit of Underwood? Is it SD ammo?
Yeah, most Underwood ammo is designed for SD, though they do offer target ammo as well. In the case of 10mm, a lot of manufacturers do not load it to it's full power potential, in which case it's really just a slightly more stout 40 S&W load. Underwood 10mm loads utilize the round to it full power (as does Buffalo Bore). Both Underwood and Buffalo Bore also offer hardcast 10mm rounds, which are preferable for large critters.

Been shooting hard cast lead in my Glock 10mm's for around 20 years now. This is largely an internet myth. Soft lead, yeah don't shoot. Hard cast, especially from a big retailer, Underwood, Buffalo Bore, etc you're good to go.

I agree that soft lead is definitely going to leave more residue than hardcast, and cause problems more quickly. I think one can mitigate the issue with frequent (and diligent) cleaning with good solvent and an aggressive brush. Still, if it's a field gun that I know I'm going to be shooting lots of full-power lead through, I prefer to stick with a traditionally rifled bore.

Been rocking the Glock 10mm’s in Glacier Park for several years now with hard cast 200gr Underwood’s.

This years pics to come I will be sporting a CPK knife (Since I finally got one) along side my New S&W 10mm with red dot.

I was on that very trail years ago, and had a mountain goat, a big billy, come up the trail as I was heading down. It was completely unconcerned that I was in its way. I ended up having to press myself up against the cliff wall to let it go by. For a brief moment, I was tempted to give it a smack on the ass as it passed, but then I thought better of it. 😅

Congrats on the new CPK!

I've shot 200gr Hard cast through many Glocks, S&W revolvers and my new S&W M&P10. I am 100% convinced that the 200gr 10mm load is the way to go for woods carry, bears, etc. Although I have shot maybe 60 rounds of 220gr and never had any failures, the internet is ripe with people that have had failures. So to me its not worth risking a failure if I actually had to shoot at a grizzly.

If you watch the Underwood website and signup for their emails, you can get 15-25% off coupons. My wife also carries the Underwood 9mm 147 hard cast bullets as well. I usually get the coupons and then order $200 worth and get the free shipping so it makes it cheaper. I might add I sometimes carry my Glock 19 with 17 rounds of the Underwood 147 hard cast while in bear country and I don't feel under gunned at all.
