Case/Bose 2011 Collaboration

That's true Roland. I thought they looked pretty good. A knife in a picture is usually a lot better or a lot worse than it looks in a photo. These were the first protos they had at the blade show. These are about 25% of the cost if I make it.

I've had a number of the Case/Bose colb. and still have a few,
They've all been very well made knives and the F/F is always
excellent... I'm sure that the Coffin Jack will fall right in line
with the others! Can't wait to get one myself...

In case you don't like reading twelve pages of talk, just a heads up that the Ebony and bone Coffin Jacks are on sale now. I guess they are scheduled for December delivery.

Thanks. I should have specified PM me. For some reason it did not come up in the first couple pages.

I just got mine in Chestnut. The knife is gorgeous and looks much better than the pics posted a couple of pages back. However, it's true that the tip is somewhat ground off (due to sharpening, I think). Another issue in mine is that the main blade is quite off-center when closed and the blades are not very sharp.

Like I said, this knife is gorgeous. I simply cannot not use it (two negatives, I'm speaking like my 14 yo daughter) and it is in my pocket right now. I just may have to get another one.

That is unacceptable for a knife at that price.

I totally agree, not a very good endorsement for someone looking to buy one sight unseen. At that price, it should almost be perfect. I'm thinking the handles must be quite nice though.

This is my first Case/Bose collaboration and I also got one in Chestnut. The scales are very nice, but the knife is far from perfect. I also bought it sight unseen. I love the overall size and design of the knife and I like the slightly thicker blades than what I am used to seeing with a standard Case knife. I really like the heft of it and the feel of the handle in your hand.

However, mine came with uneven grind lines on both blades and both blades have a wire edge on them. I was surprised at the sharp edges where the front bolster transitions to the scale on the back side along with the sharp edges around most of the shield as it was not fully fitted into the scale. The front scale on mine appears to be bowed as there is a significant gap between it and the body of the knife along the back edge. So much so that I can get a fingernail in it. Now I realize that this is not a true Tony Bose knife, but for $300 I would expect the fit and finish to be as good, if not better than my $50 Amber bone Texas Jack, but that is simply not the case.

I'm kinda torn as to what to do with it now. I will probably send it back to Case to be fixed, but I don't know if that will make it better or worse as I have not had to send a knife into Case before for repair.

I've never had a problem with any colab knife, but know plenty of people who have. Instead of getting it fixed, have it swapped out if you can (and have the person you bought it from look through his stock and find you a good one).

I agree....there is NO excuse for a collab knife to have sharp edges, gaps, uneven grinds, etc. The whole point of the series is that they are supposed to be as close to custom as a non-custom can get, and they are also supposed to be miles and miles better than regular production knives. For $300, I expect "near" flawless execution of the collab knives, and I haven't accepted a knife in the past that wasn't close to that.

I got to handle a couple of these at the friendly neighborhood Case shop this afternoon. They were very nice, but the examples I checked out had a couple little problems. There was blade play on the master blades of both, and the tips on both of the pen blades were ground strangely. Other than those little quirks, the fit and finish was what I've come to expect of the Case/ Bose collab series. Which is to say, wonderful. It is a very, very nice pattern. It's perfectly sized, and feels great in the hand. The blade action was also spot-on, with good snap. I would have bought one, but both of the knives they had in stock were chestnut bone, and I'm holding out for ebony.

Here are the pics (sorry about taking so long, I suck at it and I'm not even sure guys like me should be allowed to have a camera). I think the tip is missing due to poor sharpening: during sharpening the main axis of the nife was kept perpendicular to the wheel, rather than folloing the contour of the blade.

The same for the secondary blade.

Here is the off-center main blade. It does not rub the liner.

Bottom line is that this knife is beautiful and I love it, but it also should be better than this for this price. I decided I won't get a second one, it's just not worth it (for this price I can get a custom), but I'll keep and use this one.

I can't speak for all of the knives that will be built, but I think they missed the mark on these blades.

Thank you for the photos, Cisco. These are really special production knives and I'd hate for Case to do anything other than their best on any one of these knives. I'm still excited about these (I look forward to them every year!) but I haven't pulled the trigger yet.

I recall that the early Norfolks and early Tribal Spear got quite a few posts because of various "issues". I waited a couple of months before buying mine and both are pretty well 'right-on' with all aspects.
I wonder if the same will happen here: i.e. the workers seem to need awhile to get 'the hang' of making a collab ?
I know, it sounds stupid, but that's how it has seemed.

I'd personally get pretty angry buying a knife in that price bracket and receiving that...hopefully those who also purchase one have better results to post.
