Case's new Rogers Jigged Walnut Bone

Thanks for the compliments on my Peanut - I've put it in the old ashtray that holds my change and Sunday knives (mostly penknives) - it will get some pocket carry on dressy days. I do think I will pick up one of the 90 Stockman versions for some EDC use; Case did this series right. OH

My Stockman arrived at 8am this morning, been eagerly awaiting this might be the first one in Europe!

However....

The PROS

Very nice compact size, wonderful to have sunken-joints, like the cut-out for the Spey, ringed bolsters look great, excellent bone colour, well inlet shield, fine finish on the pins. Could be a useful 3 blade type of Penknife.

What's not there you ask?

THE CONS

MAJOR blade-play on the Clip & Sheepfoot blades, I'm not nit picking here or moaning about some play, you can see the blades move between the liners, this unsurprisingly gives weak snap. Loads of gaps up the two blade pivot end, immediately visible and bad enough to get a finger nail in..

Very disappointing as it looks such a fine knife but these fit issues render it useless, I was thinking of giving it as a present but would regret offering that. Mostly, I've been well pleased with my CASE knives but this is poor, the 25th August must've been a bad day at the factory for somebody... Sending it back to the vendor or to CASE will be a drag as I live in Europe, extra postal costs and a probable extra dose of import duty on the returned knife (You try explaining returns to Customs...) I hope the week turns out better....;)

Here ya go Brett. What do you think of modding the spey into a pen? I don't know if it's been discussed before, but I'm curious as to why Case only does their jigged bone in the center section and not end to end.

Alan

Alan, that's a beautiful 63090. After all these tempting pics, I'm feeling the urge to pick up one with these nice covers.

You asked about modding the spey into a pen. I've done that, as described here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...ckman-Review-amp-Pics-(and-a-Few-Modest-Mods) It turned out as a "pen with a belly" and I kinda like it.

Thanks for the link Andrew. Will, after your comments I pulled out my Case and after closer examination there is no blade play. I will say that it does feel a little less solid than other examples. As you noted to send it back and forth and incur all the extra charges seems exorbitant compared to the original cost.

Alan I packed it up and it will go back tomorrow. The Bay seller I've used many times, was most apologetic and accommodating. I really liked the size and look of the pattern and look forward to getting a good example back. I think I might be able to persuade customs it's just a return or gift....It should not have left CASE like that, but if I get a good one, all will be fine. The bone is handsome and it's a sleek knife, not had problems with other CASE Stockmen so this must be some bad luck really. This pattern make for a nice comparison with my Queen No.26 Small stockman, another knife I'm very keen on, only the Queen has square bolsters, so no sunk-joints but it is a wonderful compact carry. Just like a 3 blade version of the Penknife, discrete and very handy.

Thanks, Will

Will, sorry to hear about your "bad luck" with your good-looking but functionally deficient new stockman. :( I hope your exchange of the knife for another results in a fantastic knife for you!

GT Thanks, some people may groan about the Bay, but the seller I got it from has always been very professional and helpful so I'm optimistic about getting a decent one back. I could've sent it to CASE but that's a 6-8 wk wait...and I'm eager to get a replacement fast.

Regards, Will

FINALLY the replacement arrived today! Hurrah!:thumbup:

Sent on 14th Oct...but held up being 'processed' in Chicago for nearly a month :grumpy:

Really like this pattern and the new one is fault-free and a wonderful new recruit to the EDC corps.

Certainly can recommend this pattern to anyone thirsting for a compact and useful small stockman, it looks great too!;)

Good to hear Will (except for the month in Chicago):o:eek: When I sent EARL off to Duncan, he spent at least a month in Chicago as well:grumpy:

Until this thread popped up again, I had forgotten about this wonderful offering from CASE. From what I've seen, they are reasonably priced so talking myself out of one may be hopeless:D

Just arrived . Peanut and Seahorse Whittler
Very pleased with the color matches side to side and knife to knife.

Harry

Good lookin' knives in this thread! Looks like Case is consistent in the coloring across the board. One of these might be my next purchase. Just have to decide which pattern.

Why can't they give the Pen-Knife this fine bone? It's never been in anything else than Yellow D for years now:grumpy:

Such a pity as it's a great pocket friend.

Hope you have/had a safe and enjoyable trip to visit family on Michigan's Left Coast, Harry! At least the weather should be much better for traveling than it often is at this time of year.

When the sun comes out again (April? :(), you should get a glamor shot of your two new curvy beauties and post them in the Notable Pairs thread. They certainly qualify! And I saw in some thread that you've planted a seed with your family that might result in you expanding your Rogers jigged walnut holdings!:D
