Charlow Barlow History

Ah, thank you for posting this, Rob! That's what was confusing me, some had yellow in them and some, not as much.

Perry - this is the other Antique Yellow Saw-Cut Bone version, not nearly as yellow, however, one of the MOST popular TC Barlows. ;):)
From the 3rd Run (Orchardist Label) Real Sheepfoot Barlow with long pull blade.

The coloring on that run of Antique Yellow Sawcut is my favorite.

Bob - your example is very nice. It has a little more yellow underneath than mine. 👍👍;)

Paul - thank you and like you, I preferred a pen with mine, however, I had to take what I could get and even that wasn't easy.:)

I was looking through Perry's recent photo factory and liked his nostalgic photos. I thought this one needed to be transferred to the history thread. ;)

I really like this soupbone pic. (most likely taken by Perry's wife, if one pays close attention ;):D:D)

Ahem, no, taken by me. My wife doesn't have the skills to take a picture like this. She merely suggested I use this old photo.:D

Ohh, alright then. :p She sure lends out good advice/photo props, regardless. ;):D

I can't even have no fun around this place no more without someone catching me. :grumpy::grumpy::rolleyes:

:p:p:p:p

Lol, that time I did actually read, Rob! Rare I know but every now and then I pick up things.

Fred - I double checked GEC's Production numbers and it seems it is not a typo. I have the 151113BE STL Black Ebony clip blade, but, neither of the clip and pen configs. My single is Gabon Ebony. :)

Fred - I double checked GEC's Production numbers and it seems it is not a typo. I have the 151113BE STL Black Ebony, but, neither of the clip and pen configs. I suppose it could be that the one listed Ebony (only) might be Macassar Ebony and the remainder Gabon Ebony, but, that is just a guess. Maybe Charlie can chime in on the different 152213 labels. My single is Gabon Ebony. :)
My clip/pen is labeled Black Ebony Wood.

I had both at one time. No difference I could see besides the labeling! I think they were 2 separate runs.

Take this with a grain of salt. I'm certain Charlie told my Clip/Pen black ebony was/is Gabon ebony and the cover says black ebony on the tube. I also swear my Pen behind Spear is Gabon ebony as well and without taking the tube out I believe it actually says Gabon ebony on it:o

Pretty cool - just noticed that only 20 single clip in 3rd cut stag were made. Makes me appreciate it more.

I went back through the Barlow thread when the long pull clips were being released. Hope this helps.

Just curious to know if they are only using the Gabon ebony on this batch as opposed to the Macassar used on some of the last batch. I ask because I spied this picture on their "What's Happening" thread with the caption "#15 TC Barlow Gabon Ebony ready for milling"

I believe it will be all Gabon. I found the wood in San Francisco a couple of years ago, and just sent it to GEC two weeks ago. Bill assures me there is plenty.
The streaks are more grey than brown, and overall it is darker/blacker than the Macassar.

That Ebony is BLACK!

I can't wait to coon-finger and chicken-eye one of those babies!

Completely differerent character than the Macassar Ebony of the Spear Barlows!

** Gabon Ebony, also known as “Gaboon” or “Black” Ebony sets the undisputed standard for true black wood around the globe and has done so throughout history. ;):)

Thanks for posting The Ebony knife and info, Rob! There are so many bits of mis-information about the black woods out there!!

I believe I have another couple of TCs to add to the master list. When I sent the Palo Santo wood to Bill, he cut some, and assembled two Barlows from the parts drawer, displaying the wood for approval. I have one, and Bill retained the other.
Here is mine, shown with a production knife. As you can see, the prototype has a 2013 blade in it, from the first Sheepfoot run.

P.S. I talked to Chris today, and she said it would be alright to send the knife back to receive a "prototype" etch!

Great posts all around. It's cool to see the TCs from before I was aware of them.
It seems like a comparison shot of the earlier Saddle Brown handles is in order, since Rob found that one-of-one Pen-behind in my collection, although how he got into my safe, I will never know??!!
:D

<Top knife, the one-of-one.
<Middle knife, the Clip run where the handles originated.
<Bottom knife, the Day's Work Saddle brown, which was slightly darker than the clip run.
Wow! It's funny how one's tastes change. When I first got into traditional knives I had no interest in Sawcut Bone. Now I love it in certain iterations, and that saddle brown spey tc is making me question my "need" for the yellow bone single spey.
