Kevin, HT is much like a relationship. The exciting way is often less stable and leaves lots of unknowns, wheras the controlled, predictable, non-exciting way is sure to last a long time and leave nothing to guess at.

Mornin' dudes. All joking aside, I did heat treat and temper a few things yesterday. The oven works awesome although not as exciting as HT at Xanders with fire. I Did the blades I thought most likely to fail in quench but they came out just fine. Time to get some more blades in the oven and get the handles and sheaths started. Have a good one y'all.

Nice all around!

You asked on the temps... how long until one should be soaked... I like to preheat my oven for a decent while (30 minutes) and after that I just watch the oven ramp back after I put the knives in. After a while the temp controller relays will stop clicking as much and the temp should be even around that time.

This all varies considerably with my kiln depending on the temp, amount of knives and thickness. Generally once the temp is where I want it I will give the kln a minute or two then set my clock/note the time. My kiln has a timer, I usually just go by that plus a couple of minutes.

Hi DFK Gang!
Yep, firewood time.
Make it a good Monday!

Firewood time! I'm looking into buying a cord soon.

To keep ht exciting with the digital kiln/controller I watch action movies while quenching. ...set up the tv behind my quench oil and watch Bruce Lee movies. :D

I know what you mean... brine quenching clay covered steel often ends up in disaster but I really enjoy it!

Hey kev when are we gonna see your new knives?

He's getting a "The Kev" stamp made first. :p :D

Buying?!

Fashion yourself an axe and get to chopping, sir.

Done that... a bunch! I used my "Legal EDC" model. :D

We used to split a lot of wood with a maul, hard work. cut tons too...

I need to cut some smaller pines here to thin them out and get some wood... my chainsaw has finally worn out so no cutting this year. I can buy wood way cheaper than I can cut it for but still want to do some thinning. I want a new Stihl and will go decimate about 50 trees when I do! lol

I can imagine a DFK axe doing the job quickly! hmmm :D

3 kogotanas and a Kukrichete should go up for sale later today or tomorrow... I'm 3/4 through handle grinding and they don't have far to go! :D

I chopped up 8 feet of .26" 5160 for a kiridashi run... the last run only increased demand so many will be made! 16 total...

Bit the bullet on an etcher. Need a few stencils now. Hmm

Hope everyones day is going swell!

That rocks! :D

Talk to Ernie Grospitch for the stencils or send him your design, he is a great guy to work with and makes top-notch stencils. http://erniesknives.com/knifemaker_stencil.html

I made my first 400 or so knives with one sheet of his stencils! they are quality...

Oh yeah, I saw them, haha. I dunno. It's so crazy here today I should just wait until i can think!

How are those Kogatanas??

Sbakker, Are you still making a friction folder?
Rolf, Firewood ? I am jealous ! I love the cold.
Xander, I will light fire crackers with the red hot blades next time so I can have the best of both worlds.
Frankjuka, I will snap some pics soon. They are all scaley and ugly right now.
Daniel, Thanks a lot bro! I have one in 1095 so I will get my brine quench on . haha.
Farchyld, Let me know how those stencils work out.I need to get some pretty soon .
Later dudes.
