I learned to drive in a Subaru back in the '80s. Dad had one of the first ones in our area. He wore out 3 engines in that thing before he finally parked it.

Sup aficionados? I doing some sharpening and sheath making on a few kiridashis today. Listening to some Hendrix. Have a good weekend y'all!

Sbakker, what bumper stickers came on your Subaru? I've never see one without bumper stickers of some kind!

Cars?? Goodgawd!
Boys, I'm going to edc my SnG DGG until my DFK drops here in M-burg.
Sound good?

Morning guys!

...my Subaru had a "Jerry's Dead, Phish Sucks, Get a Job" sticker...

OK not really. :p Here they come standard with a "Co-exist" bumper sticker. :D

Hendrix... he was the man!

Man that was crazy!

Stone sharpening is absolutely number one! This guy rocks... kind of funny but a great tutorial.

Where's the burr? Where's the burr? Where's the burr? :D

" If both sides are a smooth , your knife is OK" :D I think the mistake a lot of people make in sharpening is they try to do it by sight. Sharpening ,for me, is 99% feel and sound. Now I am learning to sharpen on a belt grinder, that is a whole new ball game! I'm getting it down though. It is a heck of a lot faster that is for sure.
Daniel have you ever used a leather stropping belt on the grinder? If you have what do you think ,is it worth the cash?
Have a good one y'all!

All serious sharpening requires one thing, investment. You choose either time or money. Money is guided systems and the like that give great results very quick. Time is buying reasonable stones and learning how to consistantly sharpen freehand.

Kevin is right, sounds and feel is the way to go. I could almost completely shrpen a knife with my eyes closed.

Daniel, how's that waterstone I sent you holding up? Still using it?

The bali is with me! Pass around? Hmmm at one point.. perhaps :) I'll need a replacement before I can let this one into other potentially hazardous hands :) And it is a lefty grind. I am right handed.

Daniel, whenever you do attack the bali idea next, I'd like the refinements I spoke of to be in that next design, and THEN we can talk about passaround :D

Patience is a virtue, no?

Hope all had a great weekend.. the mtns are getting tons of some this new storm.. not that any will stick, but wow, craziness..

OH and I sharpen by smell... very refined senses here :)

Hope everyone's having an awesome weekend! Got half my new pegboard mounted and a new 72" long 24" wide 44" high workbench made. Huzzah!

I blew out three screwdriver bits though. I'm now on the search for replacements that won't break

Afternoon men.

Took a half day at work, it was so slow and boring. Blew that dollar-hour scale all outta whack with three managers working today, so I volunteered to take a half day!

I managed to get some shop time in last night and this aftrnoon, set up my new wood lathe and got a project done, a simple toy that has frustrated generations with its simplicity and yet complex uses since about 500AD...

Yep, I made myself a new yo-yo! I've carried one for years, always great fun when passing the time! Although, I won't be turning seasoned white oak again any time soon! Geeze, that stuff was difficult! I think I need to completely redo the edges on three tools! I was touching them up every so often as well. Might need to make some of my own soon, I have enough 1084 to make a couple tools.

It weighs in at just under 2oz, a heafty one for sure, but it plays very well! Sleeps solidly, responds quickly and spins true. Next one is going to be made from something a bit easier to turn, maybe maple.

Hope everyones enjoying their evening!

Evening all! I'm in Big Sky, Montana for a few days for a work conference. Food, drinks and lodgings on the University... It's a nice couple days. :)

Scott^ did you take a knife?
Happy Monday!
Incoming INFI today. :) A gift from a fellow HOG. How 'bout that?

Where's the balisong proto? Let's do a passaround!

:D ...still working on CAD design!

I suck at sharpening but he made it look so easy!:p very helpful vid, thanks Daniel!
I'm just getting used to that style of hand sharpening, it has been fun learning... first with a granite slab and paper and now I'm purchasing a 1000 and 6000 grit King waterstone set!

The key with the grinder is a steady hand along with brand new belts. I use the slack belt section (with a very tight belt tension for minimal convex) on top of the KMG.

I use a leather strop (belt) on the grinder for just about everything I make, the are excellent. I have a handmade strop in the house for leatherwork and touch ups... also like phone book paper on a flat surface.

I'm liking the stones so much I just ordered a 1000 grit King Ice Bear waterstone and am looking for a a 6000 one today. I'm getting set up for just over 50 shipped. I think I can use both stones you gave me in the progression, am excited to see! I think sharpening at the sink is fun and am addicted to the super sharp edge.

That's a plan! I'm hoping to get some bali parts wj'd as soon as possible! :D Sounds excellent... can do a pass around with it too.

We had snow here! crazy cold all of a sudden...

That rocks! I love the pegboard.

Blown bits... I buy star drive (torx I think) bits for just about everything after helping m neighbor do some construction jobs. The all break down but I like the driver on the stars...

Fantastic vdo, thanks, Daniel!!
Chris- you stink.
