Cheers! GEC Sudbuster 715222

I am envisioning a lot of pocket time for this one’s future
Did you sand the micarta a little or wash it?

I got mine today and really like it! I'm very pleased with the pull. The last 71's felt like they wanted to rip my thumbnail off everytime, so I'm happy to be able to pinch open this one without difficulty.
How is the pull on the caplifter?

Got mine in, little bummed in the pulls. After flushing my blade is a soft 3. The caplifter in the other hand is hardly openable, beyond a 10. Going to get with GEC on Monday to see if they can do anything for me as as far as fixing the seized cap lifter or re pinning it. I will say once that sucker is open it’s flush all around. Zero blade rap too.

I am surprised there is so much variation in the pulls? Maybe the rivet construction is best with a single blade per bolster? Every 71 I had in the past was a consistent 6 pull.

My Sudbuster 71 is a 5 on both tools, a little lighter than my 2021 GEC 71.
I like the Sudbuster more than I expected, the lifter/driver adds a lot of utility and zero extra bulk. All we need is a small GEC woodsaw and Victorinox will be in trouble. Also an 81 - we are overdue for more 81’s.

Could just be different folks interpretations of the pull. I sure don’t consider myself to be an authority, but I’d call mine a strong 5 or maybe a 6 - pretty much the sweet spot in my opinion.

much better 🧐 believe me this is not a model id spend money on deleting.

I knew you were joking. That said, while deleting the caplifter would essentially give you a very expensive Bull Nose, if you deleted the main blade, you’d have a single-blade GEC that was really one of a kind. 😎

I'd often wished for a #71 Slim... Hopefully GEC will do a regular run of them some day. 🤠

I’ve noticed the thickness of the scales on the Bull Nose varies from run to run, and even knife to knife within the same run. I have some that are noticeably slimmer than others, but I’ll have to compare them my Sudbuster. (I just got the Natural Canvas in the mail yesterday, but we’ve been doing two days of birthday activities and I’ve only had a brief moment to handle it.)

Chalk me up as one of those who were a little disappointed in the finish of the new Sudbuster. There were scratches on the caplifter and an uneven satin finish.

Vertical scratches on both sides of the blade.

The secondary bevel was not very even. There was a spot on the belly of the blade where it was nonexistent. At the point of the blade there was a small rounded point of metal that took quite a lot of sharpening to get rid of. Also, the finish on the Micarta handles is not as good as I am used to on past F&F knives. The handle finish is polished in most areas, but not well polished on the sides. The champered edges of the sides of the micarta look like the person doing the work started and stopped several times instead of doing it all in one swipe. All of the issues I have mentioned are ones that would not be noticed from 2 ft away. I had to put my reading glasses on to notice, so basically only noticeable to people like us that really pay attention to these details.

On the positive side, most of this is stuff that isn’t a big deal as the knife is intended to be a working man’s knife. If you know how to sharpen a knife to your liking then you just might have a little work to do right off the bat. The action on both tools is just right for me. The cap lifter does require more strength than the main blade. I’d put the main blade at a 5.5 and the caplifter at a 8 on my scale.

I think I prefer this latest run of natural canavas micarta. I wanted to see how much of a shine the micarta would take. A little elbow grease and it polished up nicely with some, 400, 600, 1500 and hand buffed with a little blue magic polish cream. The top one is from 2018 run and sports the same name of micarata “natural canavas” but much darker than this last run. it’s a user had smoother handles from EDC but the micarta polished up real nice with a clean rag and a little blue magic just for comparison.
