Cheers! GEC Sudbuster 715222

Lookin’ good, Joshua!
Do you, or anyone else, know if the caplifters are hardened? Could they be sharpened?
If you want, I'm up for doing that modification. It'll require grinding on a belt, but it'd make an interesting coping blade. Could even pull off a spear point or drop point for you, but why when you've got that classic sodbuster drop point in the other side of the bed?

I think I prefer this latest run of natural canavas micarta. I wanted to see how much of a shine the micarta would take. A little elbow grease and it polished up nicely with some, 400, 600, 1500 and hand buffed with a little blue magic polish cream. The top one is from 2018 run and sports the same name of micarata “natural canavas” but much darker than this last run. it’s a user had smoother handles from EDC but the micarta polished up real nice with a clean rag and a little blue magic just for comparison.

Very nice polish job! I love the look of polished micarta. To me, makes it look and feel better, classier, nicer all around.

I might have to take you up on that! Thanks for the offer.

I got mine in a few days ago but hadn't had much time to mess with it until today.

A few minor gripes: The action was very gritty on both blades, they needed to be flushed with oil and worked open and closed quite a bit. It’s better now, but the snap doesn’t compare to previous #71s. The caplifter has some scratches that appear to be from rubbing against the liner. The pull is lighter than older #71s, but not weak like some other recent GEC runs. I’d call it a 5 compared to the usual 7+. The factory edge wasn’t great, but it sharpened up nicely.

All that said, I do like the knife and the pattern. I think the caplifter fits it well. Here it is compared to a Natural Canvas Bull Nose from 2015. (The Micarta on the 2015 used to be as light as the Sudbuster, but I’ve yet to figure out how to keep NCM from darkening significantly with carry/use.)

As others have said, the thickness of the two-blade shouldn’t be a problem if you’re used to the standard #71. 🤣

IMHO, the mahogany coloring of a well used natural micarta handled knife is very cool! Both of your knives are beautiful!

It still is the same old $60 farm and field, inflation doesn't effect the process just the cost.
I just received a black micarta that is flawless, so I know they’re capable of it! I do get where you are coming from though.

The black micarta on mine is even polished down thinner than my natural, really is surprisingly slim.

Got this one in the mail today. I'm impressed with it. It's definitely going into my pocket to be used, and I don't say that for all of my GECs. LOL

Both are nicely centered in their wells, no wobble on either, both pulls are firm at 7ish main/6ish lifter, and just the tiniest bit of blade rap. A nice generous pivot flush with mineral oil, a few passes on the ceramic stones for that tiny bit of rap, and into the rotation this goes!

It had dropped while I was driving and I didn't want to fumble around at 65 miles an hour lol...but man...OD green sudbuster will be really cool!

I'm a little late, but here are the pics I promised. :)

I do wish the pull was just a little lighter on both the blade and caplifter, but they aren't too bad at all. I'm curious to see how the pivot holds up to prying paint lids and whatnot. As usual, the fit and finish is stupendous. I just love how GEC finishes their canvas Micarta. I'm not usually a fan of blade etches, but I really like Mike's in particular. :)
