Cold Steel= flat out liars

When you want to try a knife with the latest "super steel," do you order from Cold Steel?

When you want to try out a new locking mechanism on a folder, do you order from Cold Steel?

When you're just dying to try out a new handle material on a knife, do you order from Cold Steel?

When you want to learn about knife manufacturing and the industry from an insider's persepctive, do you go to the Cold Steel Forum, here on BF, and talk to the President/Owner/Representative?

I go to Spyderco and Kershaw, both of whom have factories of their own, right here in the United States!

How is any of this relevant to the discussion?

I contended that Spyderco, the company YOU mistakenly drug into the Cold Steel thread to use as a comparison to Cold Steel's outsource only model, was a vastly superior company because of the fact that they have their own factory, or did you forget that?

This is relevant in that I am proving my case (and pretty much everybody else's on these forums), that Spyderco and Cold Steel are nothing alike. You said they were, remember?

Not quite. Sorry Zenheretic.

Interestingly, 3Guardsmen decided to pick up that contention and expound on it.

I kind thought my post was where you got this idea, but was hoping you were only remembering older threads where it actually was a criticism. I never faulted CS for not owning the manufacturing facilities.

Sorry Shecky I'm not going to defend hardheart.

For what it is worth, upon rererereading his post, I think that all he is saying that is whoever makes the knives in question (cold Steel's knives) makes a good product. If you follow the previous posts up a few, a dealer asked why so many Cold Steel knives sell. hardheart appears to be saying because the knives are good. If it bothers him that there is no cold steel plant that is his problem.

This. For all the crap LT is given for the marketing hype, none of it is tied directly to the manufacture of the product. You could no more call a Carbon V blade a hunk of crap than you could a Becker, which was made of the same steel by the same people. I don't know who makes their AUS8 (or now their VG1) models, but they are also good knives, imo. A lot of people say they won't own a CS because of the advertising. I own a CS because of the actual knife they sell.

I didn't criticize CS, I just pointed out that the marketing team doesn't sit in front of a grinder. The quality of the product in hand, in use, is not affected by the ad copy. Just a person's perception. And it shouldn't be affected by it in the first place.

I find this thread very interesting.

There seem to be a number of different views on this subject.

You have one group that will not buy a Cold Steel Product because or Mr. Thompson's continued and long standing ,Rabid Like, attacks on about every person and Company in the entire Knife industry.

The other group feels that you judge the knives, and like or dislike them solely based on the Performance, Price or Style.

It is far easier to not have to ever take a moral stand on Conduct, Statements or Actions of people and just have Your own personal benefit at the forefront.

If must be very nice to not ever have to draw a line in the sand and just worry about Yourself.

The most interesting point is that none of this will effect Mr. Thompson or His Company.

In the Greater Scale of things, The members of This or any other Forum are a very small part of the Overall Sales of a Company Like Cold Steel.

What is really interesting is that so many people here are more then willing to publically state that their interest in knives is more important than their position on Morals.

Interesting.

No Finger Pointing. Just my Humble Opinion.

You must not have been looking too hard because I just did a Google search and all four links I tried had them. . .

I'll keep trying just to make sure ;)

I just want to say one thing...cold steel gets alot of publicity for its crazy ways, and threads like this only turn more people on to their stuff...they like publicity, any publicity, and this is one way to get it...on a side not, I like many of their folders...and use them in my lineup of folders...

shecky you can't see the forest through the trees if you cannot see the reasoning behind these arguements.

I'll let the other posters, who will do it far better than me, try and pound it through your head.

Having read their cataloges and watched part of one of their DVD's (I just couldn't finish it) all I can say is that if those pieces of advertising entice anyone to purchase those products I am very afraid of those buyers.

I bought them......am I scary? I personally like to see products that I indent to buy being used......If I had I would have saved tons of money on name brand items that were crap.......

I was talking with a knife store employee......he informed me with a straight face that a Gerber Applegate Farbairn would hold 1000 pounds on it's lock......... at which point I had him hand it over to me and flexed it with my fingers. I like seeing a knife lock tested with weight, and with smacks on the spine to test the lock against shock.

say what you want about their advertising, at least I don't ever worry about my fingers getting snapped off when the lock fails .........

this is not a plug for CS......there are lots of knives that are worth their price and are good products......

my point is I wish that all manufacturers would put out video's testing their products.........competitors ought to show their knifes doing more than CS knives......that would shut LT up. Because you can't tell me that if a Busse was put up against a CS fixed blade of similar blade size that it would not spank the CS...... but lots of the CS products are much cheaper to buy and abuse.....so it is a trade off.

I happen to love their videos...redicuoul sure, but entertaining...I just wish I could watch stuff like that from every knife company, maybe not so extreme, but just knives in action, im such a knife nut if there was a knife channel of shows where people just cut thigns with knives I wouldn't miss a single episode, lol...I did buy the knives just because of the videos though...for me its just entertainment...

3Guardsmen-

Why do you feel it is your personal duty to defend Spyderco's honor, tooth and nail, when any insignificant little criticism pops up on BF?

Nobody cares. Seriously.

Intersting discusion going on here.

It's hard to compare a company that only sells quality products and promotes them in a tastefull manner with a company that sells a whole lotta crap and some quality products, and promotes them as if a carnival had come to town. So let's just focus on how screwed up Cold Steel is. They are constantly marketing weapons and instruments that produce images we don't need( the sharkie comes to mind) most of their knives are too poor of a quality to be considered for the use they are advertised for. So they do make some descent knives once in a while. I think that the damage done to the image of the knife community is grounds enough not to buy from them. We need quality knives marketed in a manner that does not provide ammo for the liberals.

I was just thinking how to put those words into a comment and then yours popped up. Fine comments and my feelings exactly. Quite the Wordsmith you are. salute

I actually wrote that post twice, the second time I removed all of the profanity and references to ritials performed by cults. I for one am glad this thread isn't in w&c it would be really nasty over there.

Thanks for the salute.

next thing you know, they'll be chopping concrete blocks with knives that have evil sounding names like hell razor. gives all knife users a bad image, tbqh.

Well, I see you are from Baker (man it has got to be hot there now!) I grew up in Orange County/Riverside so I am sure you prolly met Lynn as I have at the Great Western Gunshows back in the day in Pomona...That guy was eerie weird. He tries to come off as toughman and when he found out what I did for a living he spoke to me in whispered tones like we were charachters in some spy novel..ODD..He had his students hawking his wares at his booth, wearing karate shirts etc.All of em were pimply faced, glassy eyed kids pretending to be Ultimate fighters all the while treating Lynn like some sort of Demi God.

You brought up 'Cult' like and only someone who has met him and his minions would bring that up. You want to take a shower after you meet him. Anyways, I am glad he gets it here on these forums. Real knife people shun his antics. And yes, it is tough to speak of him in a civil tongue. I cuss like a sailor so much I consider it fine art.

Well I can't see this thread going anywhere good. Not that it has been anyways.

Their ads may be exaggerated, but many of their products are serviceable and more.

+1. most of my CS knives were purchased before I ever saw the video. The video's are entertaining (followed by periods of boring). I also think there should be an "Sharp Things in Action" channel. :D

that might just make me a bit insane.
