First off, let me say I am sorry if I offended anyone for calling them names last night and deserve any names or comments that was directed to me at that time. It was justified.

I guess the reason it made me so mad last night is because as I watch the knife industry as a whole, and correct me if I am wrong, there doesn't seem to be as many knife companies as there were say in durring nineties that produces good quality big fixed blades, somewhat on the cheaper side any more. There are still alot of companies out there, and some new ones as well. Some of the knives currently being made I will never be able to afford or catch, like Busse for example. That is where Cold Steel came in for me.

You have companies like Gerber, who used to make their BMF, Bowie, Mark 2 etc. Then you have Camillus that closed and took several brands with them, Becker, Western and of course Camillus brand. Then you have Cold Steel's Carbon 5 steel that Camillus made for them. When they went under Cold Steel had to come up with something else quickly because half to two-thirds of their line was made with Carbon 5. Like the Trail Master, the various Khukris, Recon scouts and the cheaper priced fixed blades. They were left kind of scrambling to save a good portion of their line.

Now I will admit that the one thing I wish Cold Steel would do is use more micarta or G-10 instead of softer rubber on their big fixed blades. I guess that would be my opinion though, and we all know about opinions.

When I see someone trashing or insulting a company like Cold Steel it really ticks me off because for alot of us they are our Busse's or other custom makers knives. It almost was like the rich kids bragging about them having the real thing and us poor people have to settle for Cold Steel. I have had to put up with alot of that attitude as a child because my family was very poor when I was a child and I just can't stand it anymore.

I can understand if a person has had problems with buying bad blades from them or had some blades that broke and caused them to have the 'tude about them. It is when Cold Steel does the same thing as other companies and nobody says anything about the other companies and just singles out Cold Steel.

I guess this is what I was trying to say last night when my temper, I'm a red head, and blood pressure spiked when reading this and didn't just let it slide replied when I was more relaxed and level headed.

Again I want to be a man and apologize for any rude comments or name calling I did last night and I deserved any names or comments that was directed to me at that time.

Have a nice day.:)

Hey Guys...

I will Assure you that Without a Doubt that Cold Steel's "Canadian Belt Knife" is not used under license from Grohmann Knives..

It is a Blatant and Obvious rip off of the Grohmann design.

Totally Agree. I would like to see other manufacturers show that their knives will meet some minimum usage. I have watched one CS proof video, thought some of the tests bogus, others quite good. ...There is not a consensus in the community about what should be a good series of product tests. But there should be.
Yes. The tests I see Cold Steel doing, which are helpful, include the lock strength tests and blade/handle integrity test.

A good knife should have exceptional strength in these areas. Edge retention is nice, but I'm more interested in whether the knife's lock will hold with extreme torquing, blade slapping with another knife or a club and that sort of thing. As much I love Benchmade, I'm not sure it would stand up in those areas, although I have no doubt that Spyderco knives would.

What sort of tests would you like to see?

One of the most oxymoronic statements I ever heard is "truth in advertising." I haven't heard of any lawsuits because use of Axe spray doesn't always result on been jumped by a hot girl. Come on, the purpose of advertising is not to explain the truth, but to make you buy a particular product. Many companies rely on hype, or even worse, subliminal messages (suggestion and manipulation) to get your money. Why should it be expected for the knife industry to be any different? It is up to the buyer to recognize quality from hype, or quality in spite of hype.

Some CS products are actually great in spite of the hype used to market them. I guess that explains why some people who love to hate them still buy some CS products. The level of hype used in CS advertising is such that I would be surprised if no one complained.

From the first time I read one of this "why I hate CS" threads, it reminded me of the arguments in the late 80's and early nineties about who was best, Mac or PC. At the end, the arguments were not about why yours is bad, but why mine is better. I've never read one of this threads without another company been mentioned as "good" or "better" or "could not be compared."

I know we are knife knuts; we are passionate about our knives. Still...

i appreciate the clarification. we have all posted things when we are tired, drunk, whatever, that weren't worded quite the way they could have been.

i think you make a fine point. not everyone can afford 500-700 for a single knife. some people's collections dont even have a total value of one "custom" knife. this doesnt make you any less of a knife nut, knife lover, user, collector.

cold steel offers a wide range of prices and products that appeal to many people. just not me.

i dont think any less of you, or anyone, because they buy cold steel. but my opinion of the company? another story, and in line with the majority of threads on the subject.

but, like i always say, buy what you like, will use, and most importantly, what you can afford.

I think the popularity of this type of thread is related to the stark contrast between CS's behavior as a corporate entity relative to other companies in the industry.

Yes we know that Coke will do just about every dirty deed to get more shelf space and have their vending machines placed closer to the window in the grocery store and Pespsi will be doing the same thing as well. We also know that politicians will wallow in the mud for their campaigns. Unfortunately we seem to accept those types of behaviours on a whole for these types of services.

In the knife industry there is still, however, a certain degree of decorum and honour among makers and industry leaders. We really do have stand-up folks who participate actively with the knife using community and share a certain camaraderie with them as well. Personally I tend to gravitate towards those companies and I want to see them succeed.

Threads always go for at least 4 pages

Why is it that when someone brings up the OLD DEAD HORSE, we all come out with clubs and beat it to death every time.

It is uncanny. If anyone posts a CS question, there will be at least 100 responses, most bad, sme good but all emotional.

I think I have figured it out. Cold Steel is Really a Big Black Hole, that when written on the NET sucks the life out of our brains and we have to write something. You cannot go with out going into a thread that says COLD STEEL in it.

Next time I dare you to not go into a cold steel thread. Your mind won't let you. See you read this one right? and this is not even about anything negative or positive about CS, yet you are here reading this because it says COLD STEEL.
