Cold Steel= flat out liars

Give me an example of any knife maker who voluntarily agrees to pay royalties to a rival knife maker in the spirit of "honesty and decency in everyday life"
And if there is such a case is that the only knife maker you purchase knives from?

So you will never buy any Buck 110 type folder other than a genuine BUCK KNIVES???
I doubt any other manufacturers pay royalties to BUCK KNIVES
Who know though...Like I said..I leave that stuff to the lawyers to work out
Thanks again....

since the buck 110 appeared in the '60s any patent they ever had is expired, imho thats not a good example.

BM paid spyderco to use the "hole" on the BM 800 FWIW, spyderco pays to use EKI's wave, i can think of lotsa examples.

BM paid spyderco to use the "hole" on the BM 800...

Oh did they? I remember that whole thread and they came to an "agreement" but I never thoguht Bm paid themn to use it? I thought they just agreed to let them use it since they couldn't stop them? Sorry I dont want to bring back all the controversy that came alogn with that old thread, just curious?

I think the point people are trying to make is that most of Cold Steel's products are clones of other manufacturer's products.

If you want to buy reputedly well-made knock-offs from Cold Steel a fraction of the real maker's cost, that's fine. Just don't pretend you don't know what you're doing, or that "Everybody Does It" so it's "No Problem."

How apppropriate. Sal Glesser has written that Cold Steel volunteered to compensate Spyderco for use of, I believe, the pocket clip.

I've been around here long enough not to be surprised by the length of a thread on this topic, especially one with such a contentious title.

But over 700 posts? If those posting here now had read through all of those posts, I think they'd have to acknowledge the futility of adding anything meaningful to the "debate".

If those posting now had read the whole thread, they would know it's about six different threads posted over a period of two years that Bastid merged together recently and maybe they wouldn't marvel so much at how long it is, too. :)

san mai3 has a vg1 core comparable to vg10 and bg42 but more flexible

I am so baffled by the stated desire by the Clan Of Cold Steel Haters (COCH) for broad patent protection and royalty payments. Giving monopoly protection does not reduce price or ensure quality. In monopoly situations, unless you have Government regulation ensuring quality, you get what the monopolist gives you. And in all cases, you pay what the monopolistic wants.

Unlike the COCH’s, I prefer buying based on price and reputation. Sure, I have purchased Randall knives, waited a couple of years, and paid $$$ for them. But you know, I have purchased any number of Randall copies for far less, and got them now. Colt Steel has a R1 copy. I have Blackjack versions, Hattori, SOG variants, etc. What knife maker does not ?

I don’t like having to spend extra. I want to be able to shop and find best value. But the COCH’s don’t like that, interferes with their “Principles”.

I am pleased to be able to state that in time the COCH’s will be able to test the strength of their piety, principles and creed. Assuming they all get old, there will be a day when even the COCH’s will have to buy prescription drugs. I assure all that you won’t be taking nasty medicines on a whim, you will be taking them to stay alive, functional. And here will be the test of character. Expect to pay about $1200 a month for the things, while your Canadian buddies pay about $300.00. Same drugs, made by the same factories. But you can’t buy those cheap drugs from Canada, because of patent and monopoly protection, instead you will have to figure out how to pay $1200 a month when your Social Security Check is $700.00 a month. Lets see, drugs, food, or Death.

You are going to love it. No complaining now, that’s what you wanted.

That's why I have insurance.

Also Wal Mart has certain generic medications that will only cost you $4 for 1 months worth. And if your Kroger pharmacy is like the one here in my small town, they will match Wal Mart's prices. So unless you spent your youth sitting in front of a computer, drinking Mt. Dew & eating Potato Chips, never stepping outside and getting some exercise, you should not need to spend $1200 a month on prescriptions.

Now back to the regularly scheduled Cold Steel bashing, lets see if this can hit 1K posts.

Where can I get my COCH member number? Do we have T-shirts I can proudly wear?

I hope that wasn't intended as an insult.

I have a bunch of CS products ranging from low end Voyagers through high-end folders including Black Sable, as well as two tantos. The VG-1 Voyagers seem to hold an edge for a long time cutting cardboard and plastic and other household chores, and have been reasonable to sharpen. My Black Sable didn't hold its edge as long as the VG-1 Voyagers but is looks great and the handle is comfortable to hold and use. Lately, I've purchased a couple of Katz folders (the Kagemushas) and like them very much. They're sturdy and come even sharper out of the box than the CS knives - easily as sharp as my Benchmades.

I just came across a new post about Cold Steel, and I went to their website to see if they had any info on the question. They did not, but I came across THIS ... Beware of Cold Steel Counterfeits

Cold Steel knock-offs are being produced and sold at an alarming rate. By way of definition, a Cold Steel knock-off is a cheaply produced, poorly manufactured copy of one of our products that is being sold as the genuine article. These products are, naturally, not covered by the Cold Steel warranty. Be especially wary, because these items are being sold in fake Cold Steel boxes and are being stamped or etched with a fake Cold Steel brand logo. As a Cold Steel customer, you should know what to look for when you purchase a Cold Steel product.

Tell Tale Signs: (see the entire article at the link above)

BWAAA HA HA HA HAAAAAA !!! !!! !!!

IIRC they PAID to use it.

Unfortunately, like bogus currency, it is difficult to tell the difference, and usually it takes a direct comparison to an authentic piece to see the difference, but here are some red flags that should tip you off.

1.) Is the item marked down substantially from the suggested retail price? This, first and foremost, should be the most obvious clue. If an item normally has a suggested retail price of $100 and it's being offered for $50 or less, you can be pretty sure that you’re being ripped off.

2.) Is the quality up to Cold Steel's standards? Look at the fittings and the finish. Are the grind lines crisp, and clean or are they blurry and indistinct? Is the blade razor sharp, or is it just somewhat sharp? If you’re buying a San Mai knife, can you see the laminate line where the different kinds of steel meet?

3.) If it is a fixed blade knife, look at the sheath that came with it? Is it a sturdy quality piece, or something made of the cheapest materials available?

4.) If it is a folder, is the lock sturdy? Does the blade wobble? Is the locking mechanism strong?

Holy Crap!!!! It turns out every Cold Steel knife I've ever owned or handled was a fake!!!

Well according to their criteria anyway:D.

brian tighe is a good custom maker but he doesn't have mirror polished san mai 3 blades and thick titanium bolsters and a lock that holds 200 lbs I've held it in my hand and it is total overkill it's like a mini sword!!

just thought I'd butt in with a question. Any one know who makes something similart to the CS Triple Action. In my mind a great idea. I don't particularly like CS, though

Sollie, that's about it. The only other triple action knife I know is a long discontinued Case folder with a short blade and Zytel scales. I only got one before they were gone from the market, but it would make a nice item if it had been a little larger.

Yes, yes you can indeed. :D

You laugh (and you certainly can in Cold Steel's case), but in general, Chinese counterfeits are nothing to laugh at. They have the manufacturing power, and the incentive, to be pretty much the best counterfeiting industry in the world. I'm Chinese (by blood. I was naturalized at elementary-school-age and am as freedom-loving (the term doesn't even mean anything nowadays ) as they come), and I've shopped the open-air markets of Shanghai and Beijing. What you see them able to make for cents is tremendous.

Look for example, at this Benchmade counterfeit for $11:

And this Boker counterfeit for $6:

These are not your average village idiots. They won't fool us, and especially not when we touch them because of the lack of fit-n-finish, but they certainly can the average Joe.

Look at the attention to detail in mimicking G-10 with milled plastic. And the torx screws, and the beefy-looking liners. Sure, we know that they're probably sheet-metal steel with no heat treat, but this sort of looks for what is probably $1 in total manufacturing costs is not at all funny.
