Cold Steel's new items

I have more than a dozen Cold Steel products. I've bought them over the past 7 years. I have never had a single problem with any of them. They all hold a great edge and need infrequent sharpening. I've met Lynn Thompson and I guarantee you, he does not weigh 300 pounds. What diff does it make what the boss of the company looks like? His knives are great and out perform those at higher prices. That is good enough for me. Hate CS all you want. You're missing out on on some great knives. I wonder how many CS haters have even ever held one of their knives? If you don't like them, don't buy them. More for me!

Don't apologize to these people. It's obvious that a lot of hard work and consideration has gone into the new line CS knives, and I am impressed. You and the people at CS deserve respect for the work you do. People say a lot crazy stuff online and when it comes to CS people can be down right disrespectful. If people aren't giving constructive criticism then ignore them.

I had Rajah II that got stolen, and I can say it was in a league of it own. That knife could chop down a tree. It is the undisputed heavy weight champion of folding knives, great work. CS is the only place where you can find such a daring design. I

I'll defiantly be picking up a a new tri-ad folder in 2010 and it's great that there are so many choose from.

thanks for the nice words. Yes we are very happy with this years line up. I say if someone doesn't like my designs that's fine, everyone has there own tastes. No one can argue with performance and these knives are function first, but functional doesn't have to look boring.

I can say thanks because it looks like CS was listening to some of us about more SM III steel and the flat ground blades on the Voyagers.

Gotta love it when that happens, I love flat ground blades on folders. :D

The new 4" Clip point Voyager and Recon 1 are on my short list. ;)

I am looking forward to the new line. Lots of fun new designs and the Tri-Ad lock is a beast.

I also have to admit a bit of a chuckle that 3G is being chastised for defending CS.

Belly up to the bar and enjoy some of the kool-aid with me 3G :)

Function is always foremost in my mind also. I'm willing to give the new knives a chance even though the new looks don't appeal to me that much visually Andrew. Past knives that I love now did not appeal to me visually when I first saw them but once they arrived and I had the chance to use them I discovered that my hands really loved them, the Dodo, Para Military, CQC14, just to name a few. If the knives pass the 'hug test' so to speak, they'll be keepers. I can tolerate an otherwise fugly ugly folder (my opinion only) if my hand thinks its beautiful. :D

I've openly bashed Cold Steel in the past, mostly on the antics of the owner but I must say, alot of the new stuff looks really original.

I have had some quality issues in the past but I plan on giving some of the new designs a shot and see how they hold up.

With that said, the Urban Dart with a stag handle is pretty ho-larious.

Damn, we've seen everything in this thread from haters to sycophants, haven't we?

:D It is rather ironic, isn't it. Well, I've certainly done my share of CS-bashing, but, from what I've seen of this years' offerings, and what I've experienced with my American Lawman (great knife), I'm willing to give serious consideration to making some more CS purchases in the near future.

i dont care what locks they use seeing as how im not a huge fan of a lot of cold steel's folders. some of the high end stuff i like, but im more drawn to their fixed blades. what i do know is that the trench hawk looks damn badass!

Aesthetically, the handles on the Voyagers aren't as appealing as the old ones. Hopefully they'll compensate with more functional ergos. The Recons are looking much nicer however. The stag Urban Dart, I can't seem to comprehend.

What is it that some of you guys do with your knives that makes the steel they're made out of so important to you? I'll bet that if a knife came without a description most of you couldn't tell the difference between 420 and H1.
[I just bought the Spyderco Warrior and Rock Salt. Both are very cool, beautifully made knives but I couldn't care less about the H1 steel. I bought them mostly for the aesthetics and the fact that IMO [the only opinion that matters] they look like deadly weapons]

I also have to chuckle about the complaints that the new CS designs are " over the top". Just how many boring look alike knives do you guys want?

Another complaint that always gets my brain reeling is that CS's knives are too big. Too big for what? To decisively make an emergency cut or to actually defend your life if need be?

Sometimes I think this forum is actually a sewing circle full of guys who think that anything that doesn't look like grandpappy's Case folder is too big , too scary looking, too unconventional etc etc.

Okay so some of us are old farts!;) Over the top and my comments about trying too hard are probably not really fair. I don't mind that a company is trying to appeal to the audience that likes those styles. I guess what I'd really like is to see more of a balance with some styles that appeal to the more traditional minded of us users out there in the fan base. In the past the simple straight forward classic lines of the knives I bought and love plus still own by Cold Steel like the Shinobu clip point, and the original UltraLock that was more straight PUUKKO in styling with the Peerless liner lock were quite usable and although plain enough for those of us in my 'sewing circle' :D we liked them and bought multiples of them when they were offered. Thats all I'm saying.

I love my American Lawman folders! I think they are quite simply among the best user folding knives I've bought in all my life of buying and collecting knives and I mean that sincerely. Its a great knife at a great price! I certainly trust the lock I can tell you that! Also, I have absolutely no problem with the steel choice and find AUS8 to be quite good. I can't say I've had any super steel blades I liked any better. S30V is all over my safe and so are some other finer steels but rarely do I carry a knife based on blade steel. I look at the whole and certain knives just cry out to be used. The Lawman is one such knife plain and simple. Thats why I bought four! Well, that and the fact that having bought many CS products since the companies inception I've learned that if there is one thing for certain with Cold Steel, its this. Models come and go with this company. If you find one you love you better get extras before its bumped from the line up and they move on.

CS did that and you can remember all the posts over the years of people bashing them for copying X,Yor Z's designs, and they didn't have to be close either, just kinda like. ;)

Soooooo now they are going out and making their own different ones as in completely different than what is out there now. :)

For me it's apparent when sharpening if a steel is very hard or not as hard. I would be less likely to guess at hardness from my standard light use. Still I think the latest, greatest steel is cool even if it has no practical benefit to me. I get those those high-end knives from Spyderco. I think Cold Steel is smart to use a middle grade steel, hyperbolic marketing and over-the-top designs. They seem to be doing well.

Yeah well, there are far worse things going on than someone simply appreciating a design enough to want to do their own version of it after modifying it enough to still stand out as unique. Copying patterns has been going on for many many generations in knives all the way back to the earliest days of knife making. Randall knives have been copied for umteen years, so have Marbles and for that matter, Case used to copy each other and they were brothers often times fighting between themselves over how the other got a pattern and so on. Buck with the 110 folder has had it copied repeatedly to this day by competitors but for some reason when certain individuals come out with a concept knife based on another pattern they saw and liked by someone else, even when the knives are done so there are very distinct differences between the original and the ones copied based on the concept it is not seen as flattering but instead viewed as theft.

Schrade copied Buck quite blatantly with the LB7 when they came out with it and the distint differences between the two are nil yet no one blinked an eye really but if Cold Steel does a pattern similar to someone elses design all the sudden the sky is falling. Its not like they stamped it with the original name and logo trying to pass it off as an original on ebay like some companies do with Emerson knives and some other brands. That is the line I draw personally but still some feel differently and thats fine. Nothing you can do about that really. Cold Steel is not alone in being accused of IP issues. BenchMade has come up a time or three with this too as well as other companies I could think of. It doesn't make it right but it does seem to be a hot issue with some. The real hard to answer question is how much has it hurt anyone really and how would you prove this if you think it did hurt you when a knife was done that seemed to reflect a design you came up with? About all you can do is piss and moan about it making a stink unless you want to go broke trying to prove in court your IP was stolen. I think Cold Steel had to settle on the Axis Lock clone they did but to my knowledge thats the only one. Are there others?

I honestly don't get who they think they'll be selling that one to...Any ideas?

That's ok, though--the new machetes and the Trench Hawk more than make up for it. :D

There were others that people moaned about, but in the interest of keeping this thread positive I won't bring all of that up again. :)

Yes it is true that most knife Companies and yes even custom makers copy from each other or at least get ideas from each others designs. It's always been that way and I believe it always will. But as you said if CS did it the world was coming to and end, most of that was just general hatred for CS fueled by a few with others that jumped on the bandwagon for whatever reasons.

I am glad that seems to be coming to an end now as more people are seeing the value of CS products. It's good because so many people have been missing out on some great blades over the years due to the BS.
