Cold Steel's new items

Thanks for the info STR. I'm of the same frame of mind when looking at the Gunsite/Voyager.
They do look funky. Not for me.
The American Lawman with the mid-lock looks more to my liking. The handle is not as "crazy" as the other offerings I viewed.

For me it's gonna be the new Recon 1 and Voyager.

Also thinking about the New American Lawman. :)

Sure his company and self promoteing are over the top. But he is in business to make money and he is certainly doing that. Hunting and enjoying himself good for him

I have seen a few cold steel videos like the Tomahawk video and it was very good

The prices on the website are crazy but who buys off there web site when you can go on ebay and pay half the suggested price

The Laredo and Nachez bowie are great piece along with the trailmaster

I prefer the old carbon V

The Talwar and Black Sable are IMHO heavy duty well constructed folders and I have a few of both

The New Hawks are what has caught my eye out of the new stuff the spike hawk and trench hawk look outstanding

I think alot of the CS haters are just jealous of old Lynn and can't look past the goofy promo stuff and some of the cheezy prouducts that they secretly lust over

STR, If you're liking the Lawman, what blade style is your preference? OOPs sorry - I see it only comes in one blade type - nice.

I want to get a Recon 1 with a plain edge tanto'ish blade with an ultra-lock before they're gone. Looks like a spear point kind of?

I think you hit on something here, Cold Steels top end folders, I have two and they are extremely well made and tough.

Black Talon

Hatamoto

I like a spear point or leaf shaped blade a lot and find they are quite versatile really so they fit all needs. Oh and I like Wharncliffe and modified wharny shapes a lot too. Clip points after that I guess. Many of my most often carried folders are one of these three blade shapes.

I just looked at a spearpoint which is what I want but they don't have the Recon 1 in it unless you get 1/2 serrated - darn!

all I can say Talwar one of best knifes in my collection

Great Photo and a great knife.

I have had plenty of custom folders and although these are not as smooth they are a bank vault when it cones to solid lockup

I love the look and feel of these Talwars and they are one of my favorite folders

Ankerson we got the same knives:D

For the money and IMHO maybe the best prouduction bowies out there

What is it that some of you guys do with your knives that makes the steel they're made out of so important to you? I'll bet that if a knife came without a description most of you couldn't tell the difference between 420 and H1.
[I just bought the Spyderco Warrior and Rock Salt. Both are very cool, beautifully made knives but I couldn't care less about the H1 steel. I bought them mostly for the aesthetics and the fact that IMO [the only opinion that matters] they look like deadly weapons]

I also have to chuckle about the complaints that the new CS designs are " over the top". Just how many boring look alike knives do you guys want?

Another complaint that always gets my brain reeling is that CS's knives are too big. Too big for what? To decisively make an emergency cut or to actually defend your life if need be?

Sometimes I think this forum is actually a sewing circle full of guys who think that anything that doesn't look like grandpappy's Case folder is too big , too scary looking, too unconventional etc etc.

I want a med clip voyager. I used to have one when working offshore, and it went through three years on the Gulf plus a few more after without a hitch. Add a full height grind, higher carbon content steel, and the tri-ad, and I'm all enthused. I had a Lawman and have an XL Espada, I really like the lock.

I don't think it's so much the steel itself, at least for me. I've always said that AUS8A and VG-1 seem like fine steels for EDC blades and that most people probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference. However, there is a difference between steels and the higher end stuff that CS puts out seems to charge premium steel prices for perfectly sufficient, yet (relatively speaking) middle-of-the-road steels.

The fact of the matter is that H1 will absolutely not rust, giving it a characteristic that 420 dos not have and probably justifying a slightly higher price. Most people still probably won't be able to tell the difference. But those that work heavily in highly humid areas (where rust is a practical problem) or in the ocean will probably be able to tell a difference.

I have owned CS knives in the past and I've repeatedly said that some of their stuff seems to be a great deal for the price, like the Spartan that I own now. But something like the Hatamoto on eBay that can be found at about $220 shipped on the low end seems relatively high considering that the majority of folders on the market today using that steel (really, the one closest to it, but similar enough- VG10) tend to go for noticeably less.

CS has been known to do this over and over. Before taking on VG-1, they used to use AUS8A in the San Mai blades and charge incredibly expensive prices relative to what the rest of the industry was doing. If we consider that their main logo is that they have the "World's Strongest, Sharpest Knives", which really is an outright lie, it really seems to show that they are using steels that cost less and are trying to pass them off as something more than they are.

I think lately CS has been progressing for the better lately, particularly by working with Andrew Demko. Demko seems to be doing for CS what Ken Onion did for Kershaw, at least in the eyes of the "afi" knife community.

If you're looking for a rational discussion about this, I'm open to be shown that I'm wrong, exaggerating or being overly emotional here.

CS does test their knives to failure, they are one of the few companies that will show video of what their knives can do. They also have things setup at the knife shows so the public can see them. People can say whatever they want about the CS videos, but until I see another company doing the same things I just ignore them. Sure, some of it's hype, but looking past the hype and really watching as they bend the Trail Master in a vise as far as they did or the Voyager really watching how much stress they put on their knives.

As much testing as they do maybe they have tried other steels like say S30V or ATS34 etc and they didn't hold up as well to their testing as the steels they are using now. Who's to say because I really don't know because I wasn't there to see it.

Busse is another company who really tests their knives and they do it in public and on video.

I really take my hat off to these companies because they put their results out there for us to see. If all the knife companies would do the same we would really have a much better perspective on what we are getting.

Companies that really have a lot of confidence in their products means a lot. :D

I want the new 2 handed Katana machete. Don't know why, but looks cool and the price is right for me to attack evil weeds with it!!

Sorry not everyones a fan , but what type of design would you like to see in the future?

Don't apologize to these people. It's obvious that a lot of hard work and consideration has gone into the new line CS knives, and I am impressed. You and the people at CS deserve respect for the work you do. People say a lot crazy stuff online and when it comes to CS people can be down right disrespectful. If people aren't giving constructive criticism then ignore them.

I had Rajah II that got stolen, and I can say it was in a league of it own. That knife could chop down a tree. It is the undisputed heavy weight champion of folding knives, great work. CS is the only place where you can find such a daring design. I

I'll defiantly be picking up a a new tri-ad folder in 2010 and it's great that there are so many choose from.
