Collectorknives.net #85 SFO?

Mike Latham -

Your system of reserving and selling your SFO knives is becoming wayyyyyyyyyyyy too complicated. Reserve a knife by e-mail but don't reserve it by PM, etc..

Just sell the knives "First come First serve" as they come in.

- Send an email - That seems fairly simple for the customer and leaves it to where I can track / account for the reserves in ONE place and in the order they were received.

Sadly, some of my processes do not have only the customer in mind. Early Reserves are used for me to track and adjust my purchases / production to the items that are showing to be more in demand than others. That way I don't have to have all my money tied up in items that have less demand at the moment. This process has worked greatly to help me reduce overhead and excess inventory. One thing I learned a long time ago, is that if I bought a bunch of what I liked - I would still be storing it. I listen to the customer, albeit right before production instead of right after I buy it or 2 years before they make it again. There is a bonus benefit to the customer that they don't have to scramble to look for an item after it hits the market if they knew a month ago they wanted one.

I don't do SFO's often enough to come up with some whole system for it; and after every one so far I have promised myself to never do it again. (I am not very good keeping promises to myself)

Me too!
I've been dying to see how the Antique Yellow bone looks on this SFO...fabulous
Russ

I agree with you. This is the kind of bone handle I look at and imagine how wonderful it would look after a decade of pocket duty. I love bone that has contrasts that will age well.

Well, thanks for doing 'em, Mr. Latham.
I can imagine what a headache it must be to deal with fickle and demanding knife-collector types.

The way this 85 SFO is spec-ed out is pitch perfect.

HeathHall,

Thanks, i appreciate that. I can tell I may have opend a door that should have stayed closed. Addiction should take longer than a day to set in, right?

Pretty sure that Mike prefers to do things *his* way...but, just a guess:
If he gets an e-mail he knows for sure exactly where all the pre-orders are, there would be no "well, I've got 37 reserved thru PM on BFC, and 61 reserved thru my e-mail..."
Order your own SFO and you can reserve, or sell in whatever way you want ;)

You're absolutely correct. Mike has every right to do what he wants whether it's customer friendly or not. I too have every right to do what I want - stop buying from him because of his reserve system and I have at least for now.

Honestly, I can't figure out why his early bird system is "not" customer friendly. It seems pretty customer oriented to me. Ask to be put on the list via email and you aren't even obligated to buy. Sounds customer centric to me.

Please take any further commentary on dealers business practices, positive and negative, to FEEDBACK: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly!

Thanks,

Let's get back on track please. The thread is about the #85 SFO. Anything else belongs somewhere else.

Thanks,
