Masks are very common-place in Asia but there was definitely a huge stigma surrounding masks in North America up until this pandemic happened. I'm hoping the stigma goes away because masks protect EVERYONE.

One of the reasons as to why the rate of spread remained lower in Asia, despite fudged reported numbers of infections in China. Also the spread of this virus seems to be aerosolized too in addition to spreading through contact with infected surfaces. At the beginning, its aerosolized spread was being denied or dismissed.

Yeah all officials were basically saying masks are useless unless you're sick. I'm 100% sure they only said this because of mask shortages. If there were enough masks for everyone, I'm sure the recommendation would have been for everyone to wear them from the start.

I'm fairly certain it was illegal in many places to wear masks in public, kinda crazy how that shifted so fast.
Some cities/states have laws on the books stating that it's against the law to wear a mask for the purpose of hiding your face/identity.

These laws are generally only used either to discourage masked/anonymous troublemakers at protests/rallies, or as an add-on crime for robberies etc.

I think there aren't too many places that simply prohibit wearing masks per se (eg. I don't know of any place in the US where you risked being charged for wearing a surgical/N95 mask if you're sick, or a mask for Halloween).

As a funny aside, for the VA Lobby Day 2A rally that took place earlier this year on 1/20, there was a law prohibiting wearing a mask to hide your identity. It was cold, and a lot of people were wearing facial coverings, including some of the VA LEO. They didn't bother anyone about it, even though some of the masks certainly weren't primarily for warmth.

With estimates anywhere between 20,000+ to 45,000 attendees, the ONLY person charged under the mask law, was a female anti-2A protestor trying to stir up trouble. Lol.

There are a lot of things that I personally think have been poorly handled as far as sending a coherent message goes.

The whole, "Masks don't protect you. Don't buy them. We need them to protect our HCWs", then switching to, "Everyone should cover their face when they go out".

The latest one that I heard on the news, from Sanjay Gupta.

"Viewer question. Can you get infected from food?".

- "The answer is no. It's a respiratory disease. You get this from inhaling aerosol droplets in the air. Or by touching a contaminated surface, then touching your face. You can't get it by eating food, but if you're talking about the packaging potentially being contaminated, then yes, it's possible if you touch the packaging, then touch your face, that you might infect yourself. My advice would be to wipe the packages down when you get your groceries home".o_O

That's pretty retarded.

You're trying to tell people, that if they touch a contaminated surface, then touch their face, they can get Covid-19. But if a person working at the takeout place is infected and coughs on your food, putting this contaminated food in your mouth won't infect you?

So basically, the message is, "Hey, if you touch a contaminated surface, hold your breath and lick your fingers clean, and you're good".

I get that it's yet another stupid statement with a hidden agenda (so people don't shun these takeout businesses that are trying to stay open/make some money), but what's wrong with telling people, "Just to be safe, when you get home, nuke the food for a few minutes"?

When I first traveled to Taiwan as a kid, I asked the tour guide why so many people had masks on. He told us, "It's common in our culture to wear these masks in public when we're sick, out of consideration so we don't get other people sick". 13 y/o mind blown.

TBH, while I think mask wearing will not be as uncommon after this, I highly doubt it will become mainstream enough to continue, after (if?) this passes.

Most people here, are simply too inconsiderate to do stuff that they consider inconvenient/uncomfortable, simply as a courtesy to others. I've already stated my opinion of the, "My mask protects you, your mask protects me" message, and why it'll get way less compliance due to this selfishness/inconsideration.

***Not mine, but sounds about right***:p

Official Coronavirus guidelines?

1. Basically, you can't leave the house for any reason, but if you have to, then you can.

2. Masks are useless, but maybe you have to wear one, it can save you, it is useless, but maybe it is mandatory as well.

3. Stores are closed, except those that are open.

4. You should not go to hospitals unless you have to go there. Same applies to doctors offices, you should only go there in case of emergency, provided you are not too sick.

5. This virus is deadly but still not too scary, except that sometimes it actually leads to a global disaster.

6. Gloves won't help, but they can still help.

7. Everyone needs to stay HOME, but it's important to GO OUT.

8. There is no shortage of groceries in the supermarket, but there are many things missing when you go there in the evening, but not in the morning. Sometimes.

9. The virus has no effect on children except those it affects.

10. Animals are not affected, but there is still a cat that tested positive in Belgium in February when no one had been tested, plus a few tigers here and there…

11. You will have many symptoms when you are sick, but you can also get sick without symptoms, have symptoms without being sick, or be contagious without having symptoms. Oh, my..

12. In order not to get sick, you have to eat well and exercise, but eat whatever you have on hand and it's better not to go out, well, but no…

13. It's better to get some fresh air, but you get looked at very wrong when you get some fresh air, and most importantly, you don't go to parks or walk. But don’t sit down, except that you can do that now if you are old, but not for too long or if you are pregnant (but not too old).

14. You can't go to retirement homes, but you have to take care of the elderly and bring food and medication.

15. If you are sick, you can't go out, but you can go to the pharmacy.

16. You can get restaurant food delivered to the house, which may have been prepared by people who didn't wear masks or gloves. But you have to have your groceries decontaminated outside for 3 hours. Pizza too?

17. Every disturbing article or disturbing interview starts with "I don't want to trigger panic, but…"

18. You can't see your older mother or grandmother, but you can take a taxi and meet an older taxi driver.

19. You can walk around with a friend but not with your family if they don't live under the same roof.

20. You are safe if you maintain the appropriate social distance, but you can’t go out with friends or strangers at the safe social distance.

21. The virus remains active on different surfaces for two hours, no, four, no, six, no, we didn't say hours, maybe days? But it takes a damp environment. Oh no, not necessarily.

22. The virus stays in the air - well no, or yes, maybe, especially in a closed room, in one hour a sick person can infect ten, so if it falls, all our children were already infected at school before it was closed. But remember, if you stay at the recommended social distance, however in certain circumstances you should maintain a greater distance, which, studies show, the virus can travel further, maybe.

23. We count the number of deaths but we don't know how many people are infected as we have only tested so far those who were "almost dead" to find out if that's what they will die of…

24. We have no treatment, except that there may be one that apparently is not dangerous unless you take too much (which is the case with all medications).

25. We should stay locked up until the virus disappears, but it will only disappear if we achieve collective immunity, so when it circulates… but we must no longer be locked up for that?

Ya know, it does seem a little clusterfucky
There are always going to be differing opinions from different people, but it really doesn't help when the talking heads themselves can't send a consistent, coherent message.

Keep playing games with conflicting messages, and when shit gets confusing enough after a while, people will stop listening and just go, "Eh, whatever. Even the experts don't seem to know what the heck is going on, so I'm just gonna go with whichever perspective I personally prefer".

^ I flunked my quantum mechanics course as an under-grad. I think that I slept through Prof. Peter Lindsay's classes and course; he was a mean old Hungarian born bastid! Brilliant fella but he still skeered the sheeet outta his students.

I haver a feeling that this thread is getting close to the Poli-Dickal turning point again. It's the Schrodinger's plus the certainty of the dingleberry types.

I don't see any of that in this thread.

As for my contention that the talking heads need to refine their message and maintain some coherence and consistency, the statement is apolitical. It applies to ALL the talking heads in positions of influence, from admin and government, to the so-called SMEs and doctors being interviewed.

3 meat packing plants just got shutdown after finding Covid-19 clusters in their workers (might be a good idea to replenish stock on meats if you need to).

Cold does NOT kill the virus, yet the CDC says there's no concern with, or need to sanitize packaged food.

If the meat was potentially contaminated before it was frozen, the virus isn't deactivated. If the packaging was contaminated by the people in the plant, the stockers stocking the store, or the moron coughing all over shit in the store, without a mask on, you CAN get infected if you're not careful. Why tell people 'feel good' BS that isn't true?

Just like my earlier example with takeout food.

They TELL you that asymptomatic individuals CAN spread this, then contradict the message with stupidity.
