Council Tool Flying Fox

I want a straight haft.

Good call.

And it deserves a longer handle, either 19" or 24"+. At 19" it would make an amazing house axe. And this assumes you're going to use it for other than throwing.

The pointed heel and toe should make it a good thrower. But a thrower doesn't need the hardened poll. Kudos to Council for killing 2 birds with one stone with this axe.

Fox out of the box! The sharp end was wrapped securely – the bit had one of the synthetic edge covers, that was stuck into a heavier rubber block, then the whole head was wrapped in cellophane material.

The edge looks quite good coming from the factory other than there is a burr on one side that I will quickly lay down.

I also picked up a medium CT mask for it just so I can take it with me on an outing.

It arrived yesterday via UPS and I haven’t been able to use it yet but I’m looking forward to it. I can picture it on a handle a couple of inches longer but it’s not wanting it badly enough to not run it as it is. It sure feels good in hand and I really like the overall look of it. I think leaving it proud is fine but the barrel wedge kind of splayed out the edges of the tongue. The handle is all heartwood with a little “character –knot” at the end of the swell. I don’t know if it’s blasphemy but I am inclined to strip the stickers, scrape/sand the handle a touch and oil it just to make it mine.

Might be later this weekend before I use it too much, I just finished a fun game called “Kidney Stone”.

Short of making a straight haft for it, I bet a full-sized straight single bit or axe eye maul handle could be reduced to fit the eye. I just thought along those lines as I’ve done that to make them fit boy’s axe heads. This might be similar.

Yup. Just take a handle made for a larger eye, like a miner's axe handle, and shave it down as needed to fit the smaller eye.

Yes sir you where right, riggers haft is to small. If anyone wants a longer haft bowman handles boys axe has a real small eye.

Where can you buy bowman handles? I've never heard of them before. I found their website and they have a catalog that you can download, but it does not appear that you can order from their website, and when I did a google search I didn't find anyone selling their handles either. I found a youtube video of a guy who bought one at farm and fleet whatever that is - not a store I've ever seen or heard of in VA.

Think the pole is pretty narrow for a longer handle more I think about it have to be pretty darn good to swing that on a two foot haft .I called the lady who answered was real nice told me how much and how many and said they would sell me one or a thousand suppose shipping is the deal don’t know where all the mills fleet farms go but they would probably make a living off just the couple I stop at they always have new ones or sold out.

Got a case of the Flying Foxes today along with the new Sport Utility Classic Jersey with 32" handles, and I have to say it's everything I'd hoped it would be. Great geometry to it, and it's just begging for a longer handle. They really knocked it out of the park with these.

Not at all likely. The folks at Council are very liability-shy and for some reason feel they'd be opening themselves up to possible lawsuits if they sold heads only, with the possibility that the end consumer would do the job poorly.Personally I disagree with their stance, but that's their position and I don't see them changing it.
