Cpm-m4 556 - Update - Broken Spring.

I have been collecting EKI knives since about 2002 and I have QUITE a selection but I grabbed one for a comparison picture. I also spent a LOT of years collecting and using Sebenzas. My first Benchmade was an HK pictured also and next to that a similar OTF DA. Just a quick cell pic I thought you all might like to see some of the knives I have preferred.

Historically, BM ran it a lot softer. Without digging out the old catalogs, I think it was 58-60 or 59-61 Rc. 62-64 Rc is almost a different steel.

Yep, amazing how much difference just 3 or 4 points of RC hardness can make in the performance of a knife..

I took this cell pic a couple weeks ago and haven't had time to post it until now.

I appreciate this knife more and more.

Finally got a scale for weight comparison. my m4 mini grip is 78 grams, while my S30V mini grip (REI edition) is 73 grams. I felt those +5 grams when it first arrived. Is that all from the blade steel? seems unlikely.

It won't rub off. Just use it
alright, i'll stop babying it. :o

I've really enjoyed following this thread. It made me realize that I've spent far too much time buying and trading knives and not nearly enough time getting to know and appreciate any of them. I'd like to be someone like the men who have carried a single buck knife for thirty years. I love the look of a broken in, well used knife yet i baby all of mine way too much. Im trying to decide which knife to commit to and make my one and only edc. So thank you for this thread!

+1, True words not often heard on these forums.

Just got a chance to take an updated picture. This coating is getting really torn up but as you can see the laser engraving stays in tact.

I am glad you decided to use yours. Thats the best way to really appreciate a knife IMHO.

Thanks for the update. I've sharpened mine with my DC3 and am happily using it. I'm not a fan of how cerakote looks but it sure holds up against scratches.

I agree. Mine responds tremendously on my Trend Diamond Stones followed by a black compound on my old linen/horsehide barbers strop.

The look is not that great, but for normal use the Cerekote is pretty tough. Real abrasive cuts will dig deep though.

your clip is wearing very nicely, in just one and half month? do you have very abrasive hands or did you do something to it?

I did not do a thing but have it in my pocket. Most of it probably happened out working installing commercial and residential flooring. Humping around huge rolls of carpet and manipulating it around in large rooms that clip could really get some action. That and I toss it on the ground after I use it. When I go out and measure up a job and the 30 or 50 foot tape wont reach I toss it down as a marker. I use it all the time and I don't worry about it :)

I thought I would take a couple cell phone detail shots to show the progression of this knife.

One attempting to show the angle ground into the tumbstud from sharpening at such a low bevel:

Next showing a shot I don't normally see often:

I really appreciate your offer to help. I didn't want to completely hijack the other thread so i figured I'd post here. Hope you don't mind.

Thanks for the updated pics as well
