Critiquing~Is there really a problem?

Roger,

I find your remarks sarcastic, condescending, and rude.

Good for you Dave. I'll try to be more courteous in the future - maybe something along the lines of saying how your are full of puffed up blather and how I wouldn't bother to meet you if I tripped over you. You set such a fine example of polite discourse for others to follow.

I am new around here and maybe I have no right to post on this but I thought we where talking about steel not lace. It is a public forum if ya wear your heart on your sleeve you are gonna bleed. As long as it is not a personal attack it is what it is deal with it. Anyone who makes personal attacks on a computer is a joke and must be dismissed as such. Steven and I do not agree on some things but I enjoy his posts and think that his posts will be missed.

Bruce, I'm sure that thread pointed out that collectors are a picky bunch, and that each one has certain turn-offs when it comes to knives. This shouldn't be a surprise. I also don't think it should be disheartening for makers, because what some collectors consider to be a turn off, other collectors will like.

If that thread somehow scared a bunch of makers away from the custom forum, I'm not sure how to go about allaying their fears. In my opinion those makers should hang around the custom forum and read what people post in response to the photos of knives that are posted there. I think they will find that for every person like me that posts about not liking brass, there will be many others that like it. The same thing with Spanish notches and certain kinds of handle material. Some people like pattern welded steel, some don't. Those are personal preferences, and are only important when dealing with that person.

Bruce, since you feel that thread is intimidating to many makers, what would you suggest be done to make the custom forum less intimidating?

Honestly I think that it is good for a maker to be slightly intimidated!! To me it shows tht they care about their work and have a lot of pride in it!!! It is/should be hard to take having someone critique a piece of art/hard work that you did!! I understand that and critiques should be constructive in nature but the builder must understand that for the most part they rely on personal taste.

Either way, some is not for all and all is not for some! Take the critiques witha grain of salt and please keep posting your pieces here!!!!! Your works give me insite and something wonderful to see!! I am amazed everytime I open up this site to see what works of art are being posted here!!! There is not one person (maker who has posted here that I have seen) who has not posted some phenominal work!!

I'm not so sure that I trust the man who doesn't care about his work!!!
With that please don't stop posting pictures of your works!!!

Sorry for the spelling (a little toooooo much wine tonight).

Wow. I just checked this and I have to say what a bunch of sensitive people splitting hairs. My wife teaches kindergarten and would say turn the other cheek son.

If you're a maker and have skin you can see through then you better be a lurker. If your established and make kick ass knives don't worry.

If you're a new maker post your stuff, take your lumps, and compliments and learn something. Ignore the jack asses, they won't last.

Steven, I'm surprised your going to let one thread send you off into hiding. You're not that guy. I know you well enough if I were standing next to you I'd whack you in the back of the head. You're going soft. Sure I don't agree with your tact, or lack of, at times. But that's what makes you interesting.

I'm not here to offend people but come on. Don't you have some cool knives to post? You should all come to my hammer in this summer and shoot a buffalo gun. I think you'd all feel better.

I know that many critiques that I have read are not sugar coated, and could possibly be taken as insults, but I myself don't see them in that way, or as being rude. That is probably becuase I am not the one that is having something I put my heart and soul into making, criticized.

To me there is no level of quality that a knife should have before a maker can post it in the custom forum. I really enjoy seeing someone's first knife. However, if the maker can't take criticism well, then it probably isn't a good idea to post photos here. Folks here like to comment on the knives they see, and those comments are not always going to be complimentary.

It has been great to see the new influx of makers posting here, and to see some that used to post back again. It has been great to see the knives and to get the makers input, favorable or unfavorable, on what they think of the custom knife forum.

Holy shit you guys!

Thank the good lord for Nick Wheeler. His post made that 15 minutes reading through this thread worthwhile.

I must say that a most discouraging aspect of forums, is when participants make a show of themselves and distract others from the quality that is going on.
This shit ain't funny.:mad:Get a grip on yourselves!!!

Very true. You cant please everyone but they shouldnt start their own thread about it on this forum.

Maybe Im the only one who feels this way. If its just me, Im sorry to waste bandwidth.

Sorry, Bruce. You are a maker that has wowed me more than once with your work. If you made one of those beautiful and complex Bowie/gun knives with a Spanish notch though I would not be interested in it. It's just a small feature and really wouldn't detract from the rest of the piece but it's just my preference.

What I do look for in a knife are good ergonomics, heat treat and edge geometry. Other factors may be breakers or makers but more personal preference than anything else.

I think I would put a spanish notch on one if I knew how to make a spanish notch :D

Jose, I appreciate the apology. Im over being upset and feel sheepish for starting some of the flaming but it looks like this forum is evolving for the better if you consider it has new contributions from some of the others now.

I dont want anybody to leave or stop posting. If I didnt like this forum I wouldnt come here every day since 1999

I am thin skinned and so are some of the other makers. We are cut from a different cloth than the collectors. I just wish collectors wouldnt critisize unless the maker asked for opinions. Most times we just want to show our accomplishments to our peers, not find out all the things they dont like about them.

Cant we just get back to the knives now?

I'm willing to try an experiment, Paul.

I post a fair amount here.....I'll stop....until after Blade, when I do my write up....and maybe some of the contention will stop, as well....be a good experiment...and you all could use the rest....
STeven,

You are wrong.

I've personally heard comments from several makers who were upset with comments you've written. After a little time had lapsed they reflected on your comments and finally agreed with you. I asked every one of them if they had called or e-mailed you and all but two said "No".

Your experience and expertise is needed by collectors and knifemakers especially before Blade Show. I'm asking you to forget about your proposed "Test" and continue posting.

I hope to see you at OKCA.

Josh,
I don't know you (other than what I have read in Blade magazine, and the internet) and you don't know me, but from what i've seen you have skills beyond your years making knives and in diplomacy. It would CERTAINLY be a pleasure to attend one of your hammer-ins, unfortunately, distance makes it an obstacle.

Keep up what you are doing.:D

Peter

Peter,

Thank you very much. I really appreciate it.

I know its a long way for a hammer in but maybe someday. Thanks again.

Josh

The only good thing this thread has done for me is to again have proven that my snap judgments about who is and who is not an idiot are still correct. And I think I will now retire from the idiot room once and for all.

Didn't want to sound like a fanboy but I appreciate STeven's no bs posts too. And to tell the truth I skim over a lot of the fluff posters to specifically read his stuff. Funny thing is STeven and I "met" through PMs when he was saying some other blunt stuff to a different maker a couple of years ago. We kinda had it out but I did leave that situation with respect for him. Even though he does go over the top on occasion. But don't we all?

Fanboy rant over.:)

Any critic or any layman, can tear any knife apart, if they want to... nothing special about that at all. That’s so easy! It's a no brainer!

My question is,... why would anyone want to?
