Critiquing~Is there really a problem?

Let’s all take up a collection and donate some skin for the skull! :D

If some of you guys were really interested in getting more new people turned on about forged knives, you might want to consider the extent to which you might completely be turning them off, when the newbies see threads like this on the "premier" forged online discussion site.

Most new makers begin posting their knives in "shop talk," then at some point get up the guts to post a knife in the "makers gallery," and then at some point decide to put one up in the "custom knives" forum. It seems almost like a progression of display, where at first people are looking for basic instruction/feedback from a purely mechanical standpoint, then are looking for a combination of style/design feedback, and finally are looking for any feedback on any aspect of a knife. Some big makers never post knives outside shop talk.

Some jump right to the custom forum and begin posting, others somehow make a determination that they are "ready" for this forum. Its really interesting that lots of makers didnt even know this forum existed...lots! I think its a mixed bag of people looking for different things and with different intent. Some want to be torn apart to better themselves, while others are simply proud of something they made with their own two hands and want to show the world, but are not expecting critique and react badly or take it the wrong way.

I said it in another thread, but I really think 99% of this "problem" could be solved by:
1. Makers being much more upfront and honest about what they are looking for when they post a knife, be it critical analysis, general feedback, or simply to share their excitement.
2. Collectors/viewers trying to do their best to offer feedback that is honest and constructive without being unnesessarily demeaning and making their best attempt to relate to the maker's intent in posting the picture.

There isn't much you can do with an empty skull, with no skin and nothing inside,... except, hit with a hammer and watch it bounce around. :D

Here, let me rephrase it for you,... I also left out the word "thick".

There isn't much you can do with a THICK empty skull, with no skin and nothing inside,... except, hit with a hammer and watch it bounce around,... or maybe put a candle inside. :D

Face it folks!

You just can't keep a good SKULL down! :D

Wow... just... wow. I guess I'm not getting the whole "imp" thing.

This is addressed to David, because it’s good like t

If I pissed off everyone or even the majority by being an ass, the mission was not successful. If I ruffle some feathers, or those with different/softer sensibilities than my own, I gave up worrying about that a long time ago.:)

It’s about the knives.

Maybe it's time to start worrying.

I'm with Bob B. on this one. A part of the reason for my participation on the
Forum is to encourage new collector's . Given the recent direction of this
this ( these) posts I can't envision many wanting to join our community.

By the virtue of ownership we all have a vested interest in what happens in
here. I understand that we all all free to express ourselves ( with in
boundaries) how ever we please. But to what end???

What exactly are you saying, Paul?

I just read (quickly) that thread, and I agree with RJ Martin and Josh Smith. They're looking at this forum as an opportunity to demonstrate their skills or business sense, and can be dispassionate enough not to be disgusted by the occasional bad thread. This is great.

I also agree with Don Cowles. Steven was off line in that thread, and Don was in his right. I do think that Don should come back, but in my opinion he was in his right to be offended, not the least because no one else asked Steven to put a lid on it. We should have, and I'm sorry we didn't. This was a time when I didn't know Steven and I have in any case no taste for being flamed, but it's our loss to all of us when a maker chooses to leave, and therefore it's a good idea to make the effort to stop a fire before it has caused too much damage.

I don't have a solution for beginning makers. I have some (but limited) interest in knives in the bottom tier in terms of design / complexity, and none whatsoever in those that have obvious design or execution flaws. All I can say is, don't post something that is not good. The "best you can do" isn't enough if it doesn't reach a certain minimum level of quality. If you are just fishing for compliments / encouragements / kumbayas, it's just not going to work with me, I don't have the time. Sometimes, makers post knives when they should know better.

Last but not least, if you cannot react to comments professionally and dispassionately, by all means it's best for everyone if you elect not to post here - and that applies to makers' wives which can be even more passionate and fiery than their husband. If you think that getting bad feedback is bad, I can tell you that it is nothing compared to a flame war with another maker or a collector. I have seen several makers do that. I certainly forgive but I won't forget, and they all lost a lot of standing in my mind, whatever this is worth.

Very well said Joss.

I believe your words are worth quite a lot to any Maker willing to listen.

I'm willing to try an experiment, Paul.

I post a fair amount here.....I'll stop....until after Blade, when I do my write up....and maybe some of the contention will stop, as well....be a good experiment...and you all could use the rest....

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I am very hopeful that you will carry out your experiment STeven. Others have been warned or banned for less than things like you "ESAD MF" post.

It's a shame that you're the source of such good information along with an inexcusable amount of puffed up blather.

I'll add myself to the list of people who wouldn't bother to meet you if I tripped over you.

Dave

I certainly hope that Steven won't disappear from the forum until Blade. This forum would loose a big source of solid, reliable info if he did that. As to Steven's "no hold barred" commentary, I think that many will agree that he's demonstrating some unheard of diplomacy the last few weeks - all without loosing that edge that makes him the Garssonator... :D

I apologize for my silliness.

I hope no one took it too seriously.

I’ll try to stay more focused. :)

STeven, I have definitely been enjoying your posts. I am sure most of the regulars will agree. Hopefully you will still contribute and new members will feel welcomed at the same time.

That reminds me - we actually have moderators. Amazing how many people on this thread seem to be bucking for that job. One thing you'll find moderators rarely do is step in to a thread to hurl personal insults as you have done here.

I do think it would be a good idea for “Skull Dude” to find some other means of polishing his own skull for a while… for his own good and everyone else’s. :)

I agree with Steven, we could all use the rest...

Would the real Tai Goo please stand up?

I have to agree Roger.

I am VERY familiar with vailed insults, but this kinda goes over my head...:p:p

I'm multifaceted...

and a very sick puppy! :D

... and those are my good qualities!
