Critiquing~Is there really a problem?

I agree. This forum has denigrated from a place where we looked at pictures of great knives and WIP and commented on them into a freaking quiliting bee where people are easily offended and we are constantly trying to decide the what the definition of "Is" is. Lets talk about knives. Buying knives. Making knives. Fondling knives. This is getting tiring.

Anthony, then why don't you start some threads and post some photos?

The only photos I ever see from you are when you are selling something.

If you don't like something then do something about it.

I don't know what concerns me the most here. The fact that some makers believe they are un-fairly treated to the point they are intimidated to post here or that some think collectors have so little knife knowledge. :(

We can work on the first.

Actually Kevin, for the most part, the treatment of makers by the majority of collectors is great,... but there are a few who can spoil it for everyone and leave a bad taste in folks mouths. That always seem to be the case.

Also, I don't think any makers believe that “all” collectors have little knowledge of knives,… but just that “some” don't seem to have much. Same thing, a few spoil it for the rest. Most collectors have their certain expertise, as do makers. However, no one can know it all.

That's what makes it hard to discuss on the forum. It's a toss up between general and specific. If it gets too specific, then it becomes personal,... which I don't think anyone really wants.

I'm with you though, and would at least like to try to work on it. It may be futile,... but we can at least say we tried. :)

.

:)

I flipped open a book today, (a good diversion). It opened to the following words by Emily Dickenson, which seemed appropriate to me.

"Men die-- externally-
It is a truth- of Blood-
But we- are dying in Drama-
And Drama- is never dead-"

Tai,
Whether it matters or not, i have enjoyed the many issues you have brought up. i feel you have stated and defended your points very well, and encouraged introspection and dialogue. This is good. I, for one, appreciate your patricipation.. And learn something from your every posts. Steven is just making lemonade again.

Kevin,
I was posting pictures of knives on this forum when you were still into little red corvettes and had never heard of Jerry Fisk.

This was a collectors forum for a long time. Makers weren't allowed to post their knives.

It actually sucked! Big Time! Makers are the lifeblood of this forum. Collectors are absolutely essential but active makers have brought this place to the next level. Fisk, Bradshaw, Wheeler, JD Smith, Knight, Foster, Andrews, Cashen. I could go the rest of my life buying knives and not veer off that list.

I will do better and post some more pics of my treasures, I promise!

I will look forward to seeing your pieces. :)

Start some threads too please. As long as you have been around custom knives you should have great ideas and stories.

O.K. makers!

Time to "dog pile" on this here forum! :D

Let's show 'em what we are made of,... and what we got!

Kumbaya!

Here is your unnecessary Wheeler analogy for the day. *note to self, 2 n's, only 1 c, and 2 ss's in unnecessary!!!*

Bruce... that thread, in a way... is like the potential side effect list you hear at the end of every drug commercial.

YOU MIGHT experience one, or some, or none of the negative effects.

If you get so hung up on what negative thing MIGHT happen, then you'll never try the medicine and you'll never get better.

Let's say you do try it and get the 'ol hot-dog fingers and projectile bleeding of the ears... You stop taking it, and find a new medicine.

Same with knives, if you worry that much that you can't make one that satisifies EVERYONE, then you will never make a knife again!!!

IF you, by some chance, make one that sucks, you take those hot-dog fingers and make it different so it sells. Or just don't f'ing make that knife ever again. :D

I would also like to vote for my agreeing with Mr. Lombardo and also what STeven was posting about rings eerily familiar in my little brain.

*disclaimer* some of the previous comments may not be totally serious at this time or reflective of Nick when he is actually being serious (a rare occurence).

Screw that, dude's biting on me without having the stones to step up, and go toe-to-toe, probably some 17 yo using his big sister's computer.

He is showing to be NOT deserving of basic courtesy, no reason to stir the pot, Peter..... Brett has my Irish up, all on his own.

Best Regards,

It's interesting here in that it seems makers are taking a strong position on either side of this issue as are collectors. Not much gray area.

So we still don't seem to have an answer to my question as to if there's really problem or not.

Glad STeven initially brought this issue up though as it definitely needs to be addressed. Don't think collectors will stop their critiques, however I hope we will at least be more sensitive and courteous in our delivery.

THIS is why you have the reputation you do Steven. Your knife criticism is spot on, and I for one love that you pull no punches about the knives you see. But this is inappropriate. I tweaked you, and so did he- after you tweaked Tai. Tai took it like a man. You're freaking out like a teenage girl who found out someone got the same prom dress she did. :p

Relax dude. Take this stuff the way you want makers to take it when you tweak them on their knife designs- as constructive criticism that might help you do better in the future.

Mike,

It isn't directed at you...you have been around long enough, and dropped your snips long enough, that they are almost charming.

Brett has asked me for advice offline, given me kudos offline, and all of a sudden he is flipping like a switch hitter at a leather ball in San Franscisco, AND biting on me without stepping up directly, drive-by insulting.....my response inappropriate?.....not from where I sit.

My reputation is made person by person, in person....you have had nothing to do with me personally, so what you think about me is based upon what you see on the 'net....and you, and everyone else is most certainly entitled to think what you think.

My accountability and self-respect remain intact, thank you very much....and just who are you, again?;)

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson
