CRK Sebenza Problem

The lockbar was close, however it wasn't touching the other side of the scale it had about half a mm to the other scale. By the way I don't want this to be a CRK vs. I discussion, I just want to hear others opinions on the matter.

You made it that as soon as you crapped on CRK's reputation.

Let's give him the benefit of doubt to post photos and info on the knife to prove his point. :)

If that happened to me I would really be pissed off I can tell you. ;)

Another side note. Regardless of how that up-down blade play was developed, I think it could be fixed by CRK pretty easily by replacing the blade stop with a bit thicker one.

I don't get how the knife has up/down bladeplay even though the lockbar is not touching the other side...I've never heard of that with a frame lock.
I also don't get how the bladeplay got worse even though you've hardly used the knife.
What were your prior discussions with customer service about that you said were good experiences?

1/2 mm sounds way to close to the non locking side for a new sebbie.

BTW its the despised wrist flick that is the forbidden use in the warranty not a simple flip using the thumb stud.

Exactly.

The first post is pretty brash for someone that wants to keep the maker out of it.

His post isn't brash at all. If what he is posting is true, and that happened to me I certainly wouldn't be so nice in my post. He explained the situation and is asking the forum for suggestions on what to do now.

Ben, it seems you're in a pickle. I would try one more time to contact CRK and explain the situation, if they still won't warranty it you'll probably have to find a someone that is capable of working on framelocks to repair it for you. Sounds like you may not have a warranty anymore.

I can happen if the lockbar doesn't mate with the blade with enough pressure to hold it tightly.

Sounds like it might have been a defect and or maybe someone did infact abuse the knife before he got it, but it would have to be a lot of abuse.

Looking at the photos you definitely have a lock problem. The integral lock looks like it is touching the other scale. Either the back of the blade was ground too far or the top of the integral lock was ground to short.

I have had my Sebenza at a constant year of EDC and I use it almost every day and my integral lock only engages about 1/2 the blade. I would stay on CR about the problem. For the money these knives cost they should fix that for free! If it was purchased new then it is a QC failure on CR's side. They should have noticed that. Even flicking a knife open will not ware out the knife that quickly!

Good luck on your problem!!

Is the blade play side to side? If so, it might have to do with the bushing being just a bit too thick, as has been the case with three of my Sebs. You could try very lightly sanding the bushing itself, being careful not to overdo it. I've done it with decent results.
Good luck.

so you spend 400+$ on a knife only to have to sand the bushing down to make it work? i was thinking about a sebenza, but i think ill stick with my kershaw skyline. its 30$ and the bushings fit...

As I said in one post I had sent it back to CRK within weeks of getting my knife, and Heather and I talked on the phone, and she said that the repair people didn't see anything wrong with the knife, then she shipped back to me very quickly. Then when I emailed them again to tell them the problem was still there she told me that she was very sorry and that CRK would pay for the shipping, which i greatly appreciated.

Ok you sent it back within weeks to CR so that is the correct thing to do. I am not understanding why they didn't fix it the 1st time, but they did seem to take interest in the problem paying for shipping. What gets me is that CR didn't honor the warranty.

This is a $400 knife, not a flea market POS we are talking about. ;)

If the lock bar is sprung that far over it won't have as much tension behind it as it would say half the distance over. Because of this the lock bar can "walk" a little when the blade is wiggled up and down, causing some vertical blade play. You may be able to fix it by taking the knife apart and bending the lock bar some. Of course you shouldn't do that unless your warranty is already void.

Perhaps a bad heat treat on the lock bar???? Did you take it apart and look at thelock bar yet maybe it chipped ?? Or maybe a simple D&R and cleaning will help!!

Mine were all small Sebenzas, so they cost $330, but I see what you're saying:). I did make contact with CRK and they were very helpful, but I decided to follow the advice of forumites instead, as I'm in Canada and didn't really want to send any of them in due to shipping costs, length of turnaround time and potential Customs issues.

OK, so do you have to squeeze the lock ber to get it to travel that far, or does it go there on its own?

Is the blade play enough so that the knife clicks when you shake it? If you have to press really hard...well, the lock bar is a kind of spring. It will give a little bit.

My Sebenza looks similar to that if I squeeze it really hard, and it is practically new too. Lock up is normal if I DONT squeeze the crap out of it..

I've never used a Sebanza, nor have I ever purchased anything from Chris Reeve.

But wow. If this is true, that is some terrible customer service.

Thank you all for the replies and sympathy. To answer a few of your questions, the knife was brand new when i bought it from knifecenter. There is no side to side blade-play only up and down. The knife was hardly used. This is my first high end knife like this so i haven't thrashed it at all, it was actually my high school graduation present from my parents so it is pretty special to me.

Thanks,
Ben

Interesting. I dont know what to say, I am a little suprised that CR would treat you so poorly.

Just wanted to also add that my lockbar is about 75% over and I was told it is nothing to worry about. It still locks up tight and if it ever becomes a problem CR will take care of it (so I was told)
