Here's a "holiday gift tin" I picked up around Thanksgiving or December 1 that calls the Taylor Schrade 72OT simply a "dogleg jack".

But I'm posting it here under the impression that it's actually the Old Timer version of a Peanut. Am I mistaken?

No Sir. You are not mistaken. The 720T is every bit a Peanut. And a fine one at that.

Interesting. I got a Schrade dogleg jack for Christmas, but I didn't realize it was considered a peanut. Guess that means I actually have two peanuts now.

I have had this little guy in my watch pocket for over a week now and have used it for just about every task that comes up, from opening envelopes and trimming thread to some food prep and even cardboard box takedown, apart from the odd strop on my jeans leg it has stayed shaving sharp, up until now i have used only CV "nuts" as we are constantly being told it is best, so unless i get a catastrophic failure i shall continue to use my SS Case knives as well as my CVs.

So what is the consensus: A peanut has to be serpentine, and may have to have a clip and pen blade, but can it have squared bolsters?

I'm not making judgements against anyone else's thinking, but for me, a peanut must have round bolsters, and more specifically, the tapered kind on the orange RR pictured above.

It's been awhile, to me the term Peanut refers to the Case number 20 pattern, which is a small Serpentine Jack , in my opinion it's the distinct pivot bolster that defines the peanut and while all of the following including the Case pattern #20 ( the Peanut ) are small jacks,

sort of like Barlows are technically jacks, but not all jacks are Barlows the bolster defines and makes the Barlow unique, only the Case is the true Peanut, the term has sort of been watered down and become generic like Kleenex, Rough Rider emulates the Case Peanut by using the same distinct bolster, the Ulster 183 is a Dogleg Jack, Camillus 21 is a Pony Jack, Schrade 18OTMighty Mite

All peanuts are small serpentine jacks but not all small serpentine jacks are peanuts.;)

*But most definitely are accepted as such for the purposes of this thread.

I do agree that the strict interpretation of the peanut is the Case # 20 serpentine jack. And I agree that the term has been watered down and used for other brands small knives.
I am a very recent knife nut, and the nomenclature for so many of the knife patterns and knife brands are a confusing herd of cats.
But for the purpose of the "Cult", I believe we are more inclusive, and want to see lots of knives. Except for Texas Jacks :D
