I was in a gun shop on Monday, trying to turn knives into guns

, and got into a knife conversation with one of the patrons. He was bigger than me, which is no small feat. He knew the model number and approximate age of my single blade damascus nut, and showed me his peanut. He was not online except for eBay, but I told him to come check out BF and the Cult of the Peanut group.
No luck, but I might be back to get that Remington model 78 in .30-06...
Ah Dan, you've run into the phenomenon of the "non knife person that carries a knife."
My two very old friends, Wayne and Danny are prime examples of this. Wayne is a big guy. Maybe not quite so big as you, but he'll give ya a run for the money. At 6 foot 3 and the far side of 250 pounds he's not a little guy. Beefy old school Irishman. His choice of pocket knife? The Buck 309 companion. He won't carry anything else. It looks like a little toothpick in his paw, but he loves it. His explanation is, he knows he needs a knife, loves to go fishing, is an avid shooter, but he doesn't want to be bothered by the knife until he actually needs it. By bothered, he means he doesn't want to know it's even there. Yet when we go fishing or shooting, I have to admit, the little 309 cuts bait, fishing line, lunch, and whatever Wayne needs to cut just fine.
Danny is even bigger. At 6 feet and 4 or 5 inches, and again the far side of 260, he carries a small SAK. Theres a little classic on his keyring. And Danny is one of those guys who knows it's good to have a knife on hand, but does not want to be bothered by it until he really needs it. He's a real SAK fan, and while his classic is his edc knife, he'll change if the days activity requires it. For hiking and camping, he has a Victorinox camper he'll carry, but it's only his woods knife. For "downtown" he'll only be carrying a classic. His attitude is "I'm living in 21st century suburbia, what do I need a lot of knife for?"
Both Danny and Wayne have long thought I was totally nuts, and often just shook their heads at my knife 'accumulating'. Like I was mildly nuts, but since I was a friend they'd watch out for me. But I did notice that the Case peanut got their attention. Both commented that it was a beautiful little knife. But Wayne was loyal to his 309 for much the same reason my dad was loyal to his peanut; it was gift from his wife. Danny is loyal to his SAK, because he likes that he can replace it at any big box store, yet it's small enough that he can actually really forget it until it's needed.
A small knife like a peanut is perfect for the non knife person knife carrier.
