custom becker (pics)

We all inspire each other with our enthusiasm and coaxing our vision out of Ethan Becker's creations. Here's an item that will help fellow enthusiasts when using emery cloth or wet or dry sand paper. It will be invaluable when straightening grind lines or getting a ripple free finish on the metal. http://www.greatplanes.com/accys/gpmr6169.html

I do all my tomahawk and Becker customizing in my backyard. At 2PM today a guest arrived. He walked right passed me 15 feet and when he was about 50 feet away I had the camera ready and took this picture. I was not working on any projects just drawing new ones. Good thing my wife was out today.

hawkhead, those are some awesome looking knives, thanks for sharing. I'm gonna get me one of those sanders tomorrow! right now I'm just absorbed with acid etching and inks, currently working on a ka-bar short heavy bowie and almost finished with an mtech 151 (trailmaster clone). Still puzzling about your hidden tang from a skeleton tang but I'm sure it's gonna turn out as awesome as the rest of your work. Keep 'em coming.

Hi Zulu, by removing metal that protrudes from around the template and then carefully fitting the wooden handle block prior to carving. Your etching work has limitless possibilities. Good work and keep posting.

This is all so overwhelming for me! going to be stripping my bk2 tomorrow and I came here looking for ideas only to find troves of porn... how can I even ?! first off, how do you get your beckers so polished? my bk9 that I've sanded isn't nearly that nice, also where to get spacers, I've got stainless steel hardware that is too long for my 9 and would welcome spacers as an option (blaze or purple would be sweet). Where to get such nice handle scales?! seriously those are beautiful! especially the wood ones, I'd like to have a pair for my 2 and maybe even my 9 (in that case there'd be no spacers), any answers would be gladly appreciated! :) *noob*

Bloodydishtowel- Your name must have one heck of a story to go with it. Don't be overwhelmed by the customizing you see on these pages. The Becker enthusiasts work you look at will give you ideas, so my advice is to draw your design ideas on paper first. Once the metal is changed, you can't put it back. Changing a drawing is much easier than changing metal. Once you have your modifications planned, take a thin tipped Sharpie and draw on your blade. At this stage you can still make changes. When you are happy, you can start removing metal. When metal removal is complete, start the finishing steps. All this takes time, so don't rush or take shortcuts otherwise you will wind up with a P.O.S. I go through quite a bit of 3M wet or dry sand paper backed with an aluminum sanding block and WD40. Don't forget to mount your blade securely and work slowly. Remember that it is very easy to turn a nice Becker into a P.O.S. That's twice I said that!!! Remember the old addage: "measure twice cut once"
Sorry for the long winded sermon. I sense your eagerness to get started and buzz out a customized knife. Take your time and have fun with your hobby. All the best.

thanks for the tips! much obliged! I am very eager but I may not be modifying the blade until I've at least made myself some handles

Does anyone know of a way to polish up a blade nicely? my bk2 will be fully stripped after this coating in about an hour but all I have is "fine medium and coarse" metal sandpaper (that REALLY scratched up my bk9

I go through quite a bit of 3M wet or dry sand paper(220,320,400, maybe 600) backed with an aluminum sanding block and WD40. Don't forget to mount your blade securely and work slowly. You can purchase the wet or dry paper from an auto store or online from knifemaking supply. Hand polishing will teach you how to get and keep a true surface on your knife. You don't want a knife that has surfaces with dips, waves and rounded edges. Take your time and have fun with your hobby. All the best.

Bloodydishtowel- There literally hundreds of customized Becker knives in the Becker forum. Go through the pages, use the search function and look at what fellow Becker enthusiasts have done. We all spark each other's creative ideas. Don't forget to draw your ideas. Trace your blade if you don't feel you can produce a drawing that will work for you. Everyone here is eager to help.

hmmm even if I did sketch an idea I don't really have the tools to start doing all that but I do have the sandpaper and a stripped BK2 (I wish I had a gen 1 :( )to polish up so should be good for practice

I used super fine sandpaper after I got mine stripped. 1000,1500,2000,2500. You can find it at an auto body shop for like 5 bucks. It was time consuming, but pretty. Then I ended up forcing a patina on it.

Just curious. Why did you got to the trouble of sanding it with those grits if you was going to force a patina on it?
