Custom Low Rider pocket clips

Grumpy. The only ones typically that I can do that for where I don't need the customers knife are the ones I happen to own one of myself. I can use those in that case and just mail the clips. I just did that for a man in Brazil the other day actually. I have not made up templates to make the pocket clips ahead of time without the knife. It would require a huge investment on my part to inventory all the thin micarta to use as templates, and then find a place to store them and organize them. Even to have even a partial list it would be impractical because I have done clips on some knives and never seen another one since. Besides I need to use the little extra money I manage to get out of this for supplies. Being a hobbyist I have not taken it that seriously. And contrary to popular belief I'm not making a dime doing this. I barely snag enough to pay my shop supplies in any given month.

If you don't want to send out the knife for some reason you could make a pattern of the clip side of your knife and mail me that. It would have to be accurate and precision though and not something leaving me to do guess work. Something like a bare handle scale done in stiff card board or scrap micarta would work. I can sure make one from using that and the original clip and have for guys that had two sets of handles for the same knife or who replaced a handle with custom ones and mailed me the factory side they wanted the clip done for. Some have asked if I can't do it just using the original clip. The problem is I need to know where to fold it over or it will not bury the knife right or it will overhang far too much. So the scale is needed showing the position of the original holes if any to know this. Without seeing the height of the scale/handle in relation to the holes I can't do them accurately. Hope that makes sense.

Most always I need the knife in hand to do it. Fortunately no one has ever had to wait more than 24 hours for a custom clip from me to go back out in the mail. Most go back out completed the same day I get them so turn around time is very short. Like six days plus or minus.

Thanks for asking though.

Been a few more request for 'fat clips' lately as well as some other special requests like this Micarta scale I cut for the non lock side of a Spyderco ATR in an effort by the owner to reduce the weight. It worked. The knife is lighter now. By one scale of stainless almost. I didn't know if this would work at first but it did and quite nicely once I made the new micarta scale 1/8" thick instead of the first one that was 3/32. I did install some 1/8 pivot barrel end cuts in the back side of the two holes for mounting the clip though. This way they have some metal support to screw into rather than just rely on the Micarta by itself. The I found out the factory black head screws fell way short to mount the new scale so some new flat head ones had to be cut from my stock to make it all go together.

What we have here are a Kershaw Storm II with a low rider made to order, a Klotzki custom liner lock in green carbon fiber with a green anodized low rider 'skeleton clip' or semi wire clip I guess custom made for it to allow that gorgeous handle to still shine through. Then a pic of both the same ATR with a first attempt at a low rider and a Para Mil with its custom fit clip (same owner for both of those). I'm showing my faults here because that one of the first attempt was a flop. I ended up making it again in the first pic and must say it turned out much better second time around for the ATR set up.

Thanks everyone.

New one up today. This one is a Spyderco Police, Waved, with custom low rider clip and the flats of the blade bead blasted. I added the grip strip to aid me in getting a feel for the way the Wave mod works. Those all stainless ones are a bit slick sometimes and even more so in the cold. It was nippy here this morning.

Thanks Chuck.

--And thank you Steve. I have long dreamed for a waved Police, and you helped make it happen.

I reitierate what others have said; STR's work is superb, his turnaround time is faster than Netflix, and he is a gentleman as well. I will be sending more work his way in the near future.

If you ever had a factory knife that wasn't quite the way you like it, odds are that Steve can make your dream come true.

Just noticed you are in Bartlesville... lived there about 10 or 11 years ago, I used to manage a shoe store in the mall there....

hey STR,
I'm considering getting a Spydie Jess Horn. Would you be able to wave it and give it a fat, straight lowrider clip? if so, how much would it cost?

thanks,
Jerry

Good to see another Bartian around.

I don't think the Horn is a candidate for a Wave mod. Doubt it would work and the blade is so small the wave would take off a lot of metal.

I can certainly ride it low for you though.

Send me a pm or email and we'll go from there.

I have not recieved a PM on a Maxx recently, but I'll watch for it.

Thanks

Steve,
here's what I was thinking... The red represents the modified blade shape.

Note what I did with the spine by the hole also.

Is this feasible?

The mod to the blade is feesible yes, including the traction grooves for the the spine. I can do it. My problem is I don't have a Horn to examine but I have rebuilt one for a forum member and had it for about a week and got to know it pretty good. What you need to look at is this here. Check the drawing of a Pro Grip I Waved for someone. The Wave needs to sit above the line of the folder pretty much so that it grabs the pocket as you pull out the knife. Otherwise you end up with a knife that has a Wave on it but that you have to consciously rotate as you pull it out so that it engages.

Sit the knife just like this and draw a line with the blade closed marking the two high points on each end and see how your mod looks then and we'll go from there. In other words the Wave should be the high point. If the butt of the knife is higher it can mess with the function. If the tang portion is higher it can do the same and block the Wave sometimes also. At times I have been able to modify the handle to allow the Wave to work but I'd think it would affect the looks of the Horn drastically. If the mod sits where it needs to as the highest point when the blade is closed it will work idealy. If not, I'm not saying I can't or won't do the mod for you. I can sure make it look like that picture including the traction on the spine but no guarantees as to how well the Wave will function for you.

Thanks

Steve, thanks for the advice. that micarta horn is gorgeous.

How much to do that micarta treatment plus traction grooves and a LR clip?

Dino, I sent you an email in reply to those last questions.

On another note. Here is a Buck 112 conversion I did for a forum member.

I gold anodized the clip to make it match up better to the brass. It looks better in person. My scanner never does the work justice.

STR, that sure is PURDY!

As soon as I figure out what I want done, I'll be contacting you too!!!

I'm easy to reach so long as you go to my profile and contact me via the contact info there. Sometimes I don't check into this thread unless I've got something new to post like right now.

Yep, I do anywhere from 3 to a dozen Buck 110s and 112s every year it seems. I stopped posting a lot of them because I don't like being redundant and posting the same stuff but I will say the older Bucks open easier. So if you happen to own an old 112 with no nail nick in the blade thats the one you want to convert. Its a lot easier to open with the thumb stud than the new ones. Both work though but one is just easier thats all.

Clips I can do on any but the stainless ones. If its stainless forget it. Not going there. Can't thread it.

Here are a couple recent mods to forum members knives.

First up another Waved Civilian. I don't think I posted one of these on this forum before so this time I'll stick it here rather than the Spyderco forum or my homepage or blade and barrel.

Second is an aluminum handled Cricket by Spyderco which I retapped for a new blue jean blue tip up carry pocket clip.

Thanks for looking.

STR

This one was for two clips for the same knife. Both blue jean blue, and one in low rider and one standard type. This is the first low rider I have done for a Endura 4 and must say it was very challenging to get one to work using the existing holes. In the end I made it happen though.

Second is a Buck Odyssey folder with a custom fit low rider with a bead blasted finish next to another pocket clip request by the owner of the Buck knife. It a sheath clip for a small fixed blade knife he is having made. I did this based on a drawing he gave me and made it to his specs. Look forward to seeing how that fits on the sheath and works out. All clips are 6AL-4V titanium.

Thanks for looking.

STR-

Are you able to do a Delica 4 without me sending the knife in? Also, are you doing any sort of wire clips like the new Caly3?

Thanks.

At the very least I'd need a template copy of the side of the handle you want the clip mounted to as well as the original clip to make one for you without the knife. Of course the handle would have to show the holes and all the exact dimensions of the folder. I don't have a D4 any longer so otherwise I'd need the knife to do it.

I have not made any wire clips but have made some that were titanium I cut the middles out of like on the UK Pen Knife I rebuilt for a forum member. Its on the Spyderco.com forum. I guess you could just do a search on there for STR or UK Pen knife gets new clothes or something like that and it should come up. I'm on my laptop out in the shed at this writing and don't have any pictures loaded in this computer to show you.

For what its worth these smaller jobs like these clips are done and mailed back PDQ. (pretty darn quick) Most knives arrive early in my mail around 9am and go back out completed the same day by mid afternoon in most cases. Only rarely has it been otherwise.

Thanks for asking.
STR

Sounds good. You're still charging the $35?

It's gonna cost me more than that, as I'll have to buy another sharp to EDC while the Delica is gone...damn this addiction. :D

I'll let ya know, thanks for the response.

Yeah. I know what you mean> I know I hate it so much everytime I find another excuse or reason to need a new knife.
They rund $30 plus shipping. It is usually $5.95 Priority with signiture confirmation for shipping but if I go first class with sig. confirm its around $3.85 I think.
