Custom Low Rider pocket clips

These Cuda Maxx knives by Camillus are so big! I have to set them angled just to scan these.

This work order was for a clip flip of the factory clip, bead blasting both scales the clip, and the blade and resharpening. The blade was sharpened with a 15 degree bevel per side followed by a 20 degree secondary bevel.

It Waves pretty good now.

I've heard from some that tip-up carry of these bad boys can lead to partial opening in the pocket, and the danger of a good gash in the hand. STR--what do you think of this possibility? Is the detent strong enough to keep the blade closed like a lockback? I've got one, and I'd love to see it converted to tip-up, lefty carry if it could be done safely. The capacity of a "wave" opening is pretty cool, as well.

I have not heard that about them. The wings can maybe cause the blade to open on any knife that sports them and for that matter there are some that simply refuse to carry any liner or frame locking folder any other way but tip down carry.

I've carried them that way for years and never had a problem. Mainly just make sure its up in the corner of you pants pocket nice and snug and that alone should help keep the blade closed providing the clip has enough tension to not slide on the top of the pocket to allow the knife to move away from the corner.

I really don't much care for that knife myself. Don't get me wrong. Its well made. Its just too darn big to be practical. I had a CQC12 confiscated from me over in Arkansas once and pretty much believe the same would happen to anything bigger so I tend to avoid those knives. I love the BM Rukus also but its just one of those they really need to come out with a mini version of before I'll consider it.

On the Camillus Cuda MAXX (which I happily own two) :) it seems to me that for right-side carry, the blade would be on the inside of the pocket, rather than the outside of the pocket, and hence when you reach your hand in your pocket, the blade would be on the opposite side of your hand, somewhat protecting your hand from getting gouged.

Then again, due to the size of the blade, you can't really get your hand easily in or out of your pocket anyhow :)

I'm curious, if you don't mind posting (maybe PM me?), what was the cost for those mods on the Camillus?

Flipping the clip by marking drilling and then threading new holes for tip up carry, bead blasting both scales, and the blade and pocket clip, resharpening that massive blade after blasting it and adding PB washers in the pivot was $60

Thanks for asking.

First one of these new ones to be upgraded I think. Almost a shame but it had to be done to make it carry worthy without the sheath.

Sports a custom made thumb stud for right hand tip up carry and a custom made standard style 6AL-4V titanium pocket clip that I gold anodized to match up to the brass liners of the knife. You are hard pressed to even know the clip is ti and not brass.

Steve,
Have you ever done or considered doing back spacers that could be used as an impact weapon or glassbreaker? I think just a little metal sticking out of the back of some favorite spyderco folders would increase their usefulness.

I've seen that and figure I could do something just a matter of getting a clear picture of what the user wants I guess.

On another note I just did a whole knife in blue jean blue including another fat boy low rider clip I made up for it. This one got some other additional tweaking for the owner in the thumb stud access and the 'horns' off the spine of the handle being taken off for better comfort with the thumb.

Turned out quite nice. Thanks Dave.

I have created a way to virtually add a pocket opener to just about any existing folder that is currently set up for using a thumb stud or thumb disc to manually open it. I will need to see each one to determine if it can be done though as not all are going to work. I believe that this creation of mine is in between the patent and different than that by Ernie Emerson or Andrew Demoko because it is specifically different in that the blade need not be modified to make this work. The item I show here could theoretically be sold by itself separately from a folder, it is not parallel with the blade and not incorporated in the blade design or cut out into it after the blade is made. Also, no one to my knowledge has ever done anything like this before. I show you two examples here but the choices are endless. If your thumb stud comes off or the disc can be removed one of these can replace it for you. Each will be $30 plus shipping.

Recently I posted that I was unhappy with the thumb stud on my new Cold Steel Spectre. Well, I fixed it in a big way. Using the existing mounting hole on the blade and a new slightly longer screw and slightly shorter stud I have added my new "pocket hook" to assist in the opening of it. It works so sweet I can only tell you that you'd have to try it to believe it.

Here are two examples of what I've come up with. Both of these work exceptionally well and can easily be removed perhaps having multiple knife mounting ability.

One allows the thumb stud to still be used and mounts in behind it on the blade. It is made to specific bends to act as a pocket hook to catch the pocket when opening it like the Wave by Emerson or the Thumb disc with modified blade to give it an overhang by Andrew Demko. The other hook on the Emerson knife seen here replaces a thumb disc and basically does the same thing. One simply mounts to the top or spine of the blade and the other using the thumb stud screw mounting to the side.

For the record in case anyone needs to know, I have Ernest Emerson's permission to modify existing knives to a Wave function and I have Andrew Demko's ok to do the same so even if this isn't a unique deal separate and patentable by itself I can do them for anyone at this time. No permanent changes are made to your knife this way which is very nice in my opinion.

Thanks for looking.

I want to get my BM 350 flipped, I like the clip that's on it and don't care to have the blade treated, so all I need is the holes drilled at the other end for tip up carry.

Please send me the info for this.

I like the character of the well worn coating on both the blade and the clip, makes it feel like mine, I just can't get over the difference when I try to put it away after I have been carrying my other knives for a while.
Thanks

And yet another Buck 560 conversion. These are so nice for utility and everyday carry when done this way its almost enough to make anyone that has one just insist that Buck start offering a second generation of this folder leaving everything the same as the first generation only with the additions of the ambi thumb stud and low rider pocket clip instead of the thumb knick and leather pouch. Set up like this the knife has it all and loses nothing to any modern clipped one hand opening folders. Its fairly lightweight for such a big knife too. This one is set up for left hand tip up carry and turned out so nice I wish it were mine.

The reflection gives off a bit of a darker glow in the middle of the clip here in the closed side view picture. The pocket clip is anodized a gold color to help match up to the color of the factory finish of the titanium handles from Buck. It actually matches a bit better than shown here. The knife rides great in the pocket too and this is the easiest opening Buck conversion I think I've ever done. For some reason this one is just easy to open compared to the other 110 and 560s I've done. Heck if mine was this way I'd have never sold it.

Besides the low rider clip and ambi thumb stud conversion I also did a removable adjustable stainless pivot pin in this one and bead blasted, then resharpened the beautiful BG42 blade at the owners request.

I want to say to the owner that if this one ever goes up for sale or trade that I'd like first refusal rights to it. If the timing was right I'd gladly adopt this one into my family. :-)

Keep that in mind Chuck. Its very nice. You will be carrying this one my friend.

Thanks, Steve. I'm very excited. I'll be waiting for the mailman. Would this 560 be a good candidate for the new pocket opener you've designed?

Chuck

I actually did think of asking if you wanted that while I had it but figured with as much as you spent with me already that it would be pushing it.

I think it would certainly work yes.

The Buck 560 came out as nice as STR describes. It's a 110 bladed knife for the new millenium! Now I can ditch the nylon sheath. The "One Armed Bandit" always hung up on that sheath anyway. It rides very lightly in my pocket, almost as light as a Spyderco Endura, and it's got that classic American clip point. STR did a great job on the bead blasting, and the gold anodized clip looks like it was made at the factory for it.

STR has now done four Bucks for me, as well as a Spyderco Police, and a Camillus Cuda Maxx. Each has turned out just as I wanted.

Thanks for the comments my friend.

Here is one I just finished today. A very good friend of mine went over to Germany recently and while there found this great knife store in Munich. As a result of his trip there he has turned me on to a couple of knives that otherwise would have flown below my radar. Both are pretty nice. This one is a Tree Brand Classic lock back that is a one hand opener. The quality is very good on these Tree Brands and I have had a couple in the past I really liked. This one just needed a low rider pocket clip to be complete for my friend.

Thanks for looking.

Para Military low rider set up for tip up left hand carry.

Turned out well.

Thanks.

Boy, I never knew when I came up with that first one that these would turn so many people on. I get a lot of positive comments about thes fat boy clips. This one a replacement for the factory Lil Temp clip. Also at the owners request the screws for the clip were swapped out for torx screws. As usual the old clip, and screws were shipped home with the knife.

This one was a lot of finessing to get it to fit just right. Finally got it though.

Thanks for looking.

Got another Military by Spyderco in this morning. This one from Honolulu. She'll be riding low when she gets home now.

And secondly we have a Busse Badger that someone redid the handles on. I bead blasted it for the customer. This one is INFI steel.

Here are some before and after. Before here http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=63819&d=1165856864

After attatched.

Thanks Bryan.

Col. Sorry for the very late reply. I try to keep up but sometimes miss stuff. I have not done any of that newer knife yet but I have done other BenchMades before with pretty good success. Most look similar to the one on this Griptilian if they use the standard three hole design clip.

Thanks for asking. You can find my pricing and some other galleries of photos in the three album links in my profile homepage link. Thanks.
