Custom Slipjoints

Joe, I love that Ryu knife. I was on his site last week looking at all of his patterns. I'm somewhere on his list.

Gus, that's a beauty! Has Ken made many knives in pearl? That's a sweet pattern.

Mike,

I will jump in and tell you this is my second knife in pearl. I do not know if I like pearl as its so hard to photograph. Just kidding, I think pearl is a wonderful material for slips, vintage, very classy, stable. I look forward to making many more.

Ken

Thanks Ken. I know what you mean about the pictures, but that does look like some fine pearl on Gus' knife. I understand its harder to cut shields into pearl, but it looks like you nailed it.

Mike,

Thanks for the comment. I do think its harder as the pearl is translucent and you can see the edges of the shield to a degree. Its also very hard to use a fine tool such as a very small chisel to cut the fine points. I did not use a parser on this one as its smaller than the heraldic shield I have installed in the past using the parser and plate.

By the way, the first MOP was a Barlow pattern that I had sold on the trade forum about a year ago. I believe that James Todd has that one.

Was able to pick up Ken's swell center jack yesterday. Almost did not wait in the hour long line - no kidding, but I am glad I did.

The picture does not come close to doing justice to Ken's work. Wow .

Here is a new slipjoint I received fresh out of Al Dippold's shop. I had heard Al was doing a few slipjoints now, and I requested an upscale model. Here is the result. This double bolstered folder lets you know you have a well made slipjoint in hand. 3 3/4-inch closed, 6 1/2-inch OAL. Great walk and talk. Al's damascus with bark ivory.

Joe, that's a great knife from a good friend and an excellent maker. Congrats on that one!

If you get the chance, please send him my regards when you next speak with him.

Thanks, Elliott and Jim. I will definitely pass that on to him Elliott. Al's a great guy, great maker.

Here's one from the Plaza Show. Richard does outstanding work and seems to find some unique patterns. I really like the way the shield works into the knife pattern. Photo courtesy of Mitch Lum, a very talented young man.

Joe, I really like that slippie. Great to see you at the show!
