Cutlery Proposals for the Bladeforums 2015 Knife

You can find ironwood burl with tight patterns but it can be expensive. I did a mock-up a page or two back. Olivewood smells nice but is generally plain - I haven't seen any with active grain, not to say it doesn't exist though.

Wow, somebody's got wood. Beautiful collection Double Ott.

Quick question to anyone in the know, please don't shoot me for Blasphemy or Ignorance. But is the Blade Forum Knife always a traditional? Don't get me wrong, I love traditionals, and will definitely buy at least one of whatever design is landed on. Just keep discovering how diverse this group is, and how large the audience. With over 280k members, and 20k actually active, I would think that many of the knife manufacturers would be scrambling to offer up an option if given the chance. Whether it is seen as simply as a larger group buy order, or even just a marketing avenue to get a brand out there and talked about. I'm guessing that most manufacturers are aware of BF and how much the forum knife is talked about and shown around. I'm not trying to stir the waters, but the question keeps popping in my head as I scroll the BF knife threads....so I thought I'd ask.

I can see that a lot of effort has already been volunteered by many (Mike and many others come to mind). I'd like to throw out a truly heartfelt THANK YOU, as this has been a fun process to watch....and looking forward to participating with my first BF knife purchase.

Yes, this Bladeforums knife is always a traditional, because it is the forum knife for the traditional subforum.

Say that three times fast!

I could understand the 2 blade pocket knife especially two blade's on opposite sides that's part of the Nessmuk carry the Nessmuk fix blade and the double bit hatchet, one down two to go, I just got the 2hawks Double Bit Hatchet what a beauty what a light weight that punches like a heavy weight, as far as the pocket knife goes, I'm looking for a larger knife, do these companies make such a thing, please lemme know.

this is the BF traditionals sub-forum annual knife, so yes, it needs to be a traditional pattern.
a few years back there was a BF forum knife -- it was a sprint run of Kershaw Skylines in S30V with bright blue scales.

Seems like we are kind of to the point of talking in circles. Maybe time to start voting. Honestly it seems like it is just down to deciding if we want wood or micarta on the CS, which wood or micarta, and then stainless or carbon. (Guess this all depends on what they can and will do in the price range).

Thanks for the kind words fellows. Desert ironwood has really jumped in price in the last year or so. You may be correct that smaller slabs may not show a nice grain pattern.
However...

Skyhorse, Your Buck 110 is very, VERY nice.

To complete your Nessmuk trio you'll need a large Moose pattern slippie. GEC makes a good one and a few other makers.

Best regards

Robin

Double Ott - that is a really nice collection of desert ironwood. Here's my only two. I made the Cheyenne handle about 3 years ago and it has darkened about 40% from what it used to be. The other knife has stayed as is for 5 years.

You can literally see the metal in this stuff. Hard to capture in pictures. It may increase cost of the final product but it is beautiful and extremely durable.

I vote for ironwood if we do go with wood.

I agree that there has been a whole bunch of circling going on. But there is nothing to vote on until Charlie tells us what the exact candidates are. There may be options to vote on, but there might just be the offering from each company. Keep tuned to this station for further details.

But is the Blade Forum Knife always a traditional?

Other sub-forums have had "yearly" knives. Here's a picture of the 2012 knives from the Traditional sub-forum and the Custom sub-forum. Charles Vestal made 12 of these but only two with green micarta scales. The pattern is the Loveless fighter. You can see what his work normally sells for online, and yet these were sold out in less than 10 minutes by auction. I don't think they've done another since then.

Agreed.

The Moose pattern is what you are looking for.... Though a trapper fits the requirements too.

As mentioned GEC makes a great Moose off their 54 pattern. One of my favorites.

Pretty sure that's 2 springs on that one Jim. IIRC, only the #53 Cuban Pen and Northwood Presidential have been single spring on that frame.

The Moose in the nessmuk trio really does the bulk of the work as the fixed blade is a dedicated skinner (according to Nessmuk):D.
I think Sears would suggest a two spring.

Best regards

I missed out on both of those, the budget wouldn't allow it. So glad to see Charles work being appreciated.

I love olive wood. It is plentiful, relatively cheap. After all, the orchards must be pruned, and sometimes they chop down the whole tree. Beautiful burls and grain in olive wood. I would love to have an olive wood handled knife with stainless blades!

But, you make a good argument too, Tom!
Germany's F-Dick have made a few versions, one still available. Nice knives for well less than $50.

F.Dick Folding Knife
