Cutlery Proposals for the Bladeforums 2015 Knife

There was somebody interested in Olive wood covers. Twasn't I.
I just though the knife he posted was extremely handsome.

No harm no foul. Play ball.

Sorry knarfeng that was:

I love olive wood. It is plentiful, relatively cheap. After all, the orchards must be pruned, and sometimes they chop down the whole tree. Beautiful burls and grain in olive wood. I would love to have an olive wood handled knife with stainless blades!

But, you make a good argument too, Tom!

Hi there,
I'm new to this forum and curious of which knife you will opt for.
I am particularly interested by Canal Street Cutlery and GEC which I discovered recently. Do I have to say they are very rare birds this side of the pond?
I don't want to pollute this thread, but may be you will be amazed to see another (french) forum 2015' knife.
It is a handcrafted bouledogue (spell bulldog), one of 40 in stag bone, by Jean Issard of Thiers, a chunky (4 1/4") knife they sell since 1930 in various guises (1/2/6 pieces).

ps feel free to move this thread if intrusive.

Yes, that looks great. Thank you for sharing the picture and information abut it.

Welcome!

I am in discussion again, with the two cutleries involved, after a successful Blade Show! Hope some of you got to talk with Wally from CSC, and Chris and Patti from GEC.
My condolences to Wally - his office manager and friend of 30 years, Jean Kogut passed away just recently - and too soon.
I only met her over the phone, but she sounded like a wonderful human being!
She will be missed!

Now I am going to start a poll soon, when I figure out how, to determine which steel we should use for this year's knife. When that is complete, we will settle a few more details, then poll for the knife itself.

For those concerned with the bolsterless CSC, Wally asked me to tell you that the wood will be stabilized, giving it added resilience.

Because of several requests from you folks, I asked GEC if we could have a different secondary blade, and they said we could. Post your opinion in this thread please.

And both Cutleries are keeping a block of time open!

Watch for the Poll - I will ask to have it "stickied"!

Thanks for the update Charlie!

....and for getting us through this, yet again.

I'd like to cast a vote for a sheepsfoot secondary on the GEC.

I would be fine with pretty much any other secondary blade on the GEC as long as it were a sheepsfoot...

OK, a Wharncliffe or a coping blade would also be fine ;)

Sounds like we're getting close! :)

Ooh ooh ooh Either a Sheepfoot or "Sheepcliffe" like on the Dixie stock knife. I also think it would be great if the spines of the two blades were even like on CSC's proposal.

GEC has done a drawing for us!!
It is based on their #81 pattern, so is a big knife at 4 inches. They propose peachseed jigged bone and carbon steel, but those specs can be changed.
Otherwise, it is a very classic 2-blade Stockman, with Clip and Spey.

What do you think??

I like the clip-spey combo, but a clip-sheepfoot would work too.

My preference on the steel is somewhat dependent on the knife chosen. For the GEC, I would prefer carbon. But I like CSC's stainless, so a stainless blade on the CSC shadow would be fine. Forced to vote, I will vote carbon just for ease of sharpening.

Thanks for all your work on this, Charlie!

I really like this blade combo, but like Dr. Scott, I'd love the clip-sheepsfoot just as well. Anything in a single back spring but a pen would be an improvement. I'm liking the GEC better now. The 81 was/is my favorite model in the cattle knife. I know I'd love it in the two blade as well.

I'm in for one anyway but wharnie or sheepy would be good.:)
Thank you Charlie.

I still like the CSC knife proposal better, but, a coping blade as the GEC secondary knife would be different.

Another vote for Sheepsfoot or Wharncliffe here. I would love to have a good utilitarian blade. Those are fantastic for opening boxes and getting through that plastic packaging stuff.

Edit:
For main blade I'd love a clip point or drop point. I'd like a blade that had a sharp tip, then the secondary could be the sheepsfoot. Good combo in my opinion.

Longpull Spey blade as seen on the upcoming 2015 TC Barlows and a secondary wharncliffe/sheepsfoot would be superb.

For the GEC secondary - something with a straight cutting edge, so sheepsfoot, lambsfoot, wharncliffe, or coping would be my preference. Second choice would be something with a little less belly than that spey - a smaller spear, drop point/tribal spear, or longish pen.

Steel-wise, I prefer 440C from GEC, though I would love the CSC 14-4CrMo which I believe is equivalent to ATS-34/154CM.
