Database Error...

You PST guys have it worst, I guess. That sucks. At least on the east coast we've had plenty of prime time surfing before the nightly 0515 GMT outage.

You are right. It really does suck! The database error always happens right in the sweetspot of my internet surfing time thus preventing me from using something I paid for. I used to work in IT and did admin work on servers. If my servers had performed like this mess does, I would have been fired.

PLEASE... bring in a couple REAL server admin guys, a pallet of Mountain Dew and a couple dozen Pizzas, and they'll have this thing figured in 48 hours! Good grief, y'all.

I don't know where else to post this...

Does anyone know why the Website has been down almost everyday for the last month around midnight?

Anyone else noticing this??

I've noticed it down a lot as well, though I haven't noticed specifically around what times. Just that it's typically late night or very early morning.

The General KNIFE discussion forum is not a catch all forum.
Moved to......Tech Support, General Q&A, Site Feedback & More, which would actually be the correct forum.

This database error started occurring about the same time my main browser lost the ability to format the room correctly or let me enter my password and chat under membership.

Could the two be related? Or does anyone know why my browser suddenly wouldn't format the room properly on-screen or let me access my membership for about two months now?

Sounds like a job kicks in at around 9pm PT every night and causes the database error. Perhaps a backup job or auto update. Also, as previously mentioned, recent posts do not show up in searches. I think since Nov. 13th.

This has been occurring for me for a few weeks, which I noticed when I tried to find a thread of mine that was moved. When I eventually found it, I mentioned to the moderator that perhaps he should leave redirects, like most other moderators do, but that moderator basically called me an idiot (in much nicer language, but intent plainly apparent) because I couldn't find it. Even after I'd mentioned it wasn't showing up in recent posts.

I'm just happy to know it's not just me, proving that I'm not the idiot.

I found the interaction. Nowhere was it stated or implied that you were an idiot by any moderator.

It was not an overt statement made, so perhaps "basically called me" was an error in my words just now. Nevertheless, when I first mentioned that a redirect would've been nice, I did specifically mention that I was not able to find the thread using the search tools. So although not explicitly stated in words, I did feel like I was being spoken to like an idiot when the moderator then told me, in detail, how to use the search tools to find my thread.

We can discuss, debate, and argue perception, intent, meanings, implications, and the like until the horse is not only dead, but cut up, packaged as dog food, pooped out a canine's butt, and has fertilized a lawn. Ultimately, the point is that for me, as a consumer of this site, felt very slightly that the moderator was being a smart-ass at my expense. Very slightly, as in: not enough to complain further about.

Dammit! C'mon guys, can't we get this thing fixed? I'm tired of losing text because clicking "Reply" ends with dB Error!

I'm now resigned to typing my long entries in a Word doc so at least it's saved somewhere when the Forum locks up on me. It's really getting ridiculous.

Yes, it must've been an error.
How you feel and what actually transpired can often be different things. It looks like he was being helpful from here.

Then why bring it up here in this totally unrelated thread?

Well ok, if you really want to beat that dead horse instead of walking away from the stink, I'll be happy to mash it to as fine a point as you want to go with it.

Yes, and the key thing to remember is that it's all dependent on point of view. From my point of view, what "actually" happened is that I actually felt like I was actually being talked to like a child. Whether that was that moderator's intent, neither of us can say. And even if he did say, nobody except him would ever know if what he says is the truth or not.

From your point of view, you see him being helpful.

So you are correct: how you feel (that he was being helpful) and what actually transpired (from my point of view, that I was talked down to) are two different things.

Then why bring it up here in this totally unrelated thread?
It wasn't totally unrelated, if you go back and review the context in which I mentioned it. I was mentioning an anecdote in support of another member's statement regarding the malfunction of the recent posts search. It was a story, not a complaint.

Oh, but perhaps we can say that from your point of view, you saw it was a complaint, even though I've said I didn't mean it as such. Just as, so you say, the moderator meant no insult to me, yet that's how I saw it. Hmm...funny how that perception thing works, isn't it?

So, are we done yet? Or is he not pulped enough yet?

It's interesting to me that if two members were bickering so far off the topic of a thread, someone with a title like your would've been in here with a warning to stop. But when someone with a title like yours is involved, it's perpetuated. Very interesting indeed.

Trying—hopefully not in vain—to get back on topic, I'd like to comment that I do the same thing myself. I often type longer replies in Word as well, for the exact same reason.

I had a server that I threw together in a couple days and loaded a M$ app on to service a couple hundred clients. It required a monthly reboot to keep it running but it was only monthly not daily and it was pulled out of a dumpster.

Not quite sure what the point of this is, but I hope it's not a metaphor. I have a tremendous amount of intimate familiarity with running message boards such as this one, having done so in the past. I've been involved in coding as well, and some of my code is still in the software that powers this site. I have a good sense of the traffic volume this site pulls in, and believe me when I say that no dumpster server, especially not something running anything from Microsoft, can power this site.
