David Mirabile RONIN Battle Tanto WIP (PAGE 25 NEW CUTTING VIDEO)

Mokume Habaki on first ?

Very nice

Love the fittings on the second one ........ Lohman or antique ?

Thanks for the info. Joe and Ed, I thought that is how it would be that the blade has some air space all around it when in the SAYA.

Very nice buddy

If anyone else would like to post any Japanese style or Japanese influenced blades please feel free too

Here are some fav pics

Mirabile WAKIZASHI I wore at Blade a few years ago

I think this one won best Sword at Blade

It went to either Dudley or Riad

HARTSFIELD EL SALVADOR TANTO

MICHAEL BELL WAKIZASHI

The blade on the Maragni is 14" long(nagasa) and was delivered to me about 10 years ago. He calls it wakizashi, I call it o-tanto, so there is another bit of discussion, lol!

I ain't calling it a damn thing !

Good looking blades. Love the Mokume habaki.

I see my friend Dan Keffeler out there and I am hoping he will comment

For those that do not know Dan he is the 5 time Blade Sport cutting champion and one of the most performance oriented blade makers out there

He also does a wicked adaptation of the Japanese style blade

Say something Danny Boy :)
Hey Joe thanks for your kind words.
I've admired Dave's work for a while. Remember calling you about three years ago when I was working on his sword and using carbon fiber. I ran into a little bit of a hitch and was stuck in my glue was already mixed up. I give you a call and ask if you had David's number up in Alaska. I called him up and apparently it's pretty difficult to get a hold of him but he had a signal at the time and really came through and help me out.
It's good to see you still making amazing pieces
Dan

Here's an o-tanto :D (I jest, of course) by Dan Keffeler. CPM-3V blade, titanium hardware, carbon fiber wrapped saya, mokume habaki. (Please excuse the terrible pictures and accumulated specks of dust as I ran around trying to find decent light while keeping my feet out of the photos:confused:) Mike

From David today :

Carbon fiber over the cedar saya.
Next will be the kurigata and the kojiri.

the blade looks amazing so far; and that Hartsfield tanto, WOW! just looks like it is ready for business.

This is the closest I have to a 'traditional' Japanese blade by another friend, Stuart Branson....I got it from him several years ago. I keep the exquisite blade in the shirasaya which is another work of Art. The polish and hamon are tremendous but hard for me to get a decent picture of with my damn phone.

We all need a Coop on our life :)

Great piece Dudley

Okay guys

From David :

Almost time to do final fit and clean-up!
I think that this will be ready to be shipped to Coop by Monday.

All fittings are Carbon Fiber

I have asked David not to show a full completed picture of this piece

Not because he doesn't take a good picture

It's because Coop takes a much better picture :)

All kidding aside he really does :)

I think that the right first picture of a knife is that important

Jim has never let me down and just recently this picture that he did for me made it into a Magazine

Plus this is an important piece for me and I believe David feels the same way

He has commented that he has really perfected the fitment of his SAYA's with this piece and he has incorporated a lot of performance enhanceing features to this entire package ...... From edge geometry to Tsuka (handle) shape and length this is a true high end user piece

I'm expecting the completed package to be beautiful in a dark sinister way :)

This for me is a piece that I have wanted from David for years

I have some great blades but I wanted a piece to kinda herald back my interest in training and focus of all things Bushido in my life ..... Something at times I truly need and have been very much missing of late

So the piece is relevant enough to have its first viewed image here done by Jim .... If he will have us :)

There's some pressure for ya buddy :)

So this piece will go to Coop than he can even post the pic here or send it to me

Than the blade will come to me and I will do an unboxing video ....ya gotta see how David packages a blade ....it's crazy :)

I have tatami mats ordered so there will eventually be some videos of why things were done the way they were and how it performs

Thank you all for making this such an awesome thread and believe me there is so much more to come

Thank you David

In the meantime feel free to post up all your Japanese inspired blades and I hope everyone enjoyed David's functional wicked art

I have a feeling David has helped some makers bring their own art to life and has stirred some interest in Classic and Modern adaptations of one of my favorite Genres of Blade art

Thank you all

So cool! Davids pieces have always been very inspirational to my work, same with Dan. Love what they do.
My next tanto I am planning on doing a Tero Tuf saya, should be fun.

What's the spine thickness on this one?

Ben

Awesome work

Would love to see some cutting done with one of your bigger pieces

Joe,
I've been following this thread from the start, great WIP. David's work is beautiful on so many levels, I can only imagine how it feels in hand and performs.
David is one of the makers who's work helps inspire me to continue to improve my own smithing skills, it's a privlage to have been able to see this all come together here.
Thanks for this Joe, I'm excited to see the final images and to see you using this piece!
