I used to really hurt myself on a mountain bike buddy :)

Joe, so glad your OK and on the mend!

You need to be careful.... we need you around here!

Great project too, love Davids work, I was looking at my copy of 2007 Knives and one of my early faves of David is in that Issue!

Damn Joe, be careful out there!

The knife looks amazing. Looking forward to seeing this progress.

This is fantastic information. You're always a huge proponent of sharing about performance blades and I for one really appreciate it. I look forward to seeing how this turns out. And feel better, sir-glad it wasn't as bad as many motorcycle wrecks can be....

Thx Jeremy

I appreciate the kind words :)

Yea buddy

Nothing feels as good as jumping on a giant belt sander :)

Broke a finger also :)

Good new is that I have minimum damage. The bike is just a bike and can be easily replaced. I cannot!

I fixed it for you.:D

Get well soon brother.:)

PS- That Mirabile BT is another fantastic blade for your collection. Brilliant stuff!

Going to be an awesome project, Joe! I love David's work. The way the two of you work together down in The Pit and at Matt's booth, I can only imagine how well this is going to turn out! :D

Sorry about the burns and broken finger, but those ordeals can always be worse. Glad you are on the mend! And, had a helmet on.

Looking forward to following this.

Thx Joe

David and I truly have a unique bond

We can go months with out seeing each other and when we do it is like we just saw each other the day before :)

He is just an incredible man , friend and artisan

Matt Diskin is the the glue in so many things

David's work is another level

He has taken to Japamese style blades like not many makers could even dream too

He has imho been able to capture the true essence of the Japanese blade but do it in a way that is truly his and put a twist that makes what he is doing truly his own

There are only a few makers that their work is truly identifiable from across the room ....... David is one of them

I have Japanese inspired work from some incredible makers Hartsfield , Mills, Bell, Champagne, Slobodian etc and while they are all special in there own way something about David's work fits me

It's visceral , organic and really echoes a brutal time in Japanese history

David has stout hands and makes his handles to fit him which in turn fits me :)

Don't get me wrong he will accommodate any custom dimensions that a client requests

Another mystique about the man is that his work is very limited. David like many great Artisians is a free spirit and works when his spirit is in the mood :)

This guarantees the lucky few that receive his work will be truly an exclusive group

There are some very big name collectors that receive David's work so that makes it that much more a privilege for a hack like me to own some of his pieces in my humble collection

One heck of a comprehensive OP and interesting as well...as usual.

As for me I had time to type last night while mending I layed down my Super Moto and I'm a bit beat up

Yikes!
Take care out there.
Was just out for a ride today and the cagers drove like idiots on the highway playing Pokemon and texting and what have you.
Get well soon and hope you mend fast. Best wishes from a fellow biker.

Blade

Thank you for the kind words

As you know I love this stuff and Japanese inspired blades are the ones that started my fascination will all blade arts and crafts

If you've never handled a battle oriented Japanese impaired blade from a top tier maker do yourself a favor and do so :)

As for the bikes you are right

The roads are not what they were when I started that's for sure

I started riding at 6 years old off road and have ridden on the road for 32 years

Ive always had an assortment of bikes in the garage and I still 5 or so in the garage counting dirt bikes etc

My primary road bikes these days are a tuned Ducati

But the bike I layed down was a KTM Super Moto that I've been building for awhile

I wasn't a 100 yds from my house when I hit a turn that they had just did some repairs on and tarred the cracks and repair area

I hit the tar and my front washed out and I hit the ground :)

Totally my fault

I had on boots , jeans and a full face helmet but the same 95 degree weather that had the tar like oil had me leave my riding jacket and gloves at home

Dumb ass :)

Okay back to the WIP

Here is the Tsuka (handle)

The wood core has just been wrapped in Carbon fiber and the Kashira (butt) has been attached

Again the Kashira is solid carbon fiber

Remember it's needs the Fuchi and the Menuki and the Carbon Ito added

The Menuki is the small ornamental pieces that goes under the wrap

Menuki are not just ornamental ...... They serve a purpose

Be it to index or even add a bit or a swell under the wrap

We are not sure of what will be used at this point

This is where and when I would like to have a conversation on handle shape

This is an adaptation of the classic hour glass shape that works so well

This is a bit of a hybrid and remember it will be wrapped of course in carbon Ito

I always say if you ride long enough it's not if you are going to fall its when :)

Thx :)

Yup, I have four broken bones now complete with arthritis from my MX days. My knees sound like popcorn popping in the morning when I get up.

Cool blade too. Looking forward to seeing it complete.

Thx Willie

Bikes are fun but they really hurt sometimes :)

I'm very excited to use this piece

David really put a lot into performance targeted touches

It is truly an exercise in the best of the old blended with the new

Just looking at these pictures, literally gives me an adrenaline dump and a pounding heart. Loving this WIP thread Joe. Your accompaning history and experience based information is truely a significant enhancement. Very much looking forward to the next installment. Mike
