Destructive Knife Testing Videos???. . . . Oh Yeah!!!

Actually, the steels that need to go head to head with INFI and SR101 in different categories:

Toughness: What happens to the edge when impacting hard objects.
Lateral Strength: Is the steel strong or does it snap or bend easily
Wear Resistance: Does it lack wear resistance
Edge holding: obvious
corrossion resistance: obvious

For example, S7 is one of the toughest steels available. But it's wear resistance is very low as is it's edge holding and corrosion resistance. So what you have is a great hammer but not much of anything else.

S30V is a great stainless steel that holds an incredible edge, but fractures easily compare to tough steels, etc.

I think that the steels that need to be compared are:
INFI -
SR101 - modified 52100
SR77 - modified S7
CPM3V - because of it's toughness
1095 because it's so common and a very good carbon steel.
S30V - one of the most popular stanless steels.
ATS34 - another great stainless
5160 - they didn't put it in automotive springs for nothing
L6 - Band Saw steel

Curious? What about S7 (SR-77 specifically) in lateral strength?

The main factors for lateral strength are going to be hardness and geometry. the steel type isn't different enough that it will make much a difference. Usually the harder knives are stronger but snap instead of bending. also a deep saber grind is going to have much more lateral strength than a flat grind. Good example is the Zero tolerance line versus the regular models. The Zero tolerance are thinner at 3/16, but are easily as stiff as the 1/4 nch thick models because they are sabre ground.

So comparing an SWRK M-6 to a SYK CS-6 in lateral strength they should behave similary?

Thanks for the info.

Not sure. If they both have the same geometry, thickness and hardness, yes. But those are many factors. I thought the Rat was a high saber grind. The CS6 is thicker and flat ground I thought??

The steel properties will make a difference, but not as great as these other factors.

Do a .50 cal machine gun test like with that japanese sword video (I was impressed cuz the sword cut through at least 3 or 4 of the bullets before it finally shattered)

ooh... thats a good one! i had not thought of that.

damn, i think it would be cool to see but at the same time the mental images of a perfectly good infi blade getting smoked makes me a bit queezy.

i do think an ak47 would outlast that sword by at least 6 rounds.

Well as a wanna-be piglet, I am both FOR and AGAINST these tests!!!!

Hell Yes I want to know what they are capable of!!!!

But OH NO!!!! There goes the market!!!! Not that they are HARD to find. And not that a Busse Blade is not worth the price it fetches.... but man oh man, I am having trouble with coming up with said $$$ to buy one to try out.

Oh well, another one to add to the list of "What to buy when I win the lottery"

P.S. Jerry, I hope all of your crew has come out from the grips of the flu bug alright, and would like to send you a design for a knife that I am wondering if you would like to make out of INFI.... both for me as well as your company.

So Jerry, where the heck are these destructive videos already? I am jonesing to see a good piece of steel beaten down and come back for more.

It appears that both are missing. Could it be a problem with the links?

I checked the links, they're both correct. It says the status is live on my video page on there. It might take awhile for the links to actual work maybe. Because it took several minutes after I uploaded the videos for them to show up on my page with the thumbnails. I dunno why they don't work instantly after their uploaded.

I wanna launch CGFBMs from my friends potato gun. Talk about a flight test.;)

I really would like to see the effects of fire on different finishes and slabs, and the condition of the INFI after specific blast and/or heat situations.

I also believe chopping through cable, bar stock and plate stock would go a long way to showing "certain" #@&!heads the exit. Besides illustrating the potential use in emergency and CQ applications.

And, how about INFI edge striking INFI edge!

Ahhh.... the eternal conundrum of what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object...

Nice ;)

Jerry,
Brilliant! (downs Guiness) :) This is a great idea you have! One of the things that impressed me about your knives back when I could have still ordered a Straight Handle Steel Heart (doh, I still regret not ordering one) was the brochure that you sent showing the testing pics. Testing videos on you tube will just be way cool!
Are you planning a new edge holding test? I think it'd be neat to see (but they only allow 10 min. segments)

Take care, and have fun making the videos!
Regards,
Luke
