Destructive Knife Testing Videos???. . . . Oh Yeah!!!

The popularity of recent knife test videos that have been published on the Internet has led us to announce that Busse Combat, along with Swamp Rat and Scrap Yard will be publishing destructive test videos of our blades on youtube.com in the near future.

If you need any help Jerry I'd be happy to help out. :D I even have the camera and know how to operate the video editing program and everything... :D

Very cool idea, boss!

As far as other steels that I'd like to see tested along side Infi, include:

The ubiquitous S30V

A2

M2

3V

154CM

M4

:D

OK, but then somebody should make identical blades in all those steels.

Sounds like Jerry has covered that base as well.

We also hope to publish some other very extensive testing on different steels in the exact same blade configurations and edge bevels for comparative purposes. This will be more structured and repeatable in order to bring you the fairest comparisons possible.

Bring it on Jerry!

THE KNIFE WORLD WILL BE WATCHING

WHO WILL SURVIVE AND WHAT WILL BE LEFT OF THEM ?

;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Jerry,

I have a good research background and I cut things for a living.
But to be honest my professional experience is with blades under a few inches and mostly under one inch:o (I'm a foot and ankle surgeon)

I would be happy to do a scientific study testing the slicing ability (in non-human and dead subjects) using a variety of slicers you provide;)

Seriously:thumbup:

Get ready for the flood gates to open on ordering. Many knife nuts know about Busse, SRKW, and SYKC but I think most of the general public does not. You Tube is a very popular sight that will expand the knowledge of these companies, this shall be great for business and also great for viewing. Can't wait! :D

Hopefully nobody attacks you when you continue with your "planed" test!:D

actually when the maker does it there is no reason for attacks. Jerry did this with the original SHBM. Drove it through 1/4 or 1/2 inch thick steel plate with a press and no damage to the tip, which is amazing considering the SHBM does not have a TAAANTO tip

cobalt....any idea what size press jerry used? i have a 50 ton , a 300 ton and a 600 ton drop hammer press..... i think any of those would destroy a busse for sure though...lol ..... i wonder if jerry would send me a few blades to test.....

Please offer up some ideas of what you would like to see and we'll see what we can do!
I'd suggest you begin by performing tests on the exact same blade configurations and edge bevels for INFI, SR101 and SR77. Once the parameters for those steels have been established, the world is your oyster! :)

Actually, the steels that need to go head to head with INFI and SR101 in different categories:

Toughness: What happens to the edge when impacting hard objects.
Lateral Strength: Is the steel strong or does it snap or bend easily
Wear Resistance: Does it lack wear resistance
Edge holding: obvious
corrossion resistance: obvious

For example, S7 is one of the toughest steels available. But it's wear resistance is very low as is it's edge holding and corrosion resistance. So what you have is a great hammer but not much of anything else.

S30V is a great stainless steel that holds an incredible edge, but fractures easily compare to tough steels, etc.

I think that the steels that need to be compared are:
INFI -
SR101 - modified 52100
SR77 - modified S7
CPM3V - because of it's toughness
1095 because it's so common and a very good carbon steel.
S30V - one of the most popular stanless steels.
ATS34 - another great stainless
5160 - they didn't put it in automotive springs for nothing
L6 - Band Saw steel

For example, S7 is one of the toughest steels available. But its wear resistance is very low as is it's edge holding and corrosion resistance. So what you have is a great hammer but not much of anything else.
Hmmmm. I wonder what Dan does to S7 that makes Scrap Yard knives more than great hammers?

adds Chromium to it...ooops was that a secret that I wasn't supposed to spill??:D SO MANY SECRETS:eek:

Thanks for the info, Cobalt. I assume by adding Chromium, Dan is able to overcome all of the deficiencies in S7 that you mentioned. If that's the case, SR77 must be one helluva steel . . . er, um . . . steal! :D

Not sure if it overcomes all of the deficiency's. I am sure there is more to SR77 than what I stated, since it is a secret that I do not know and don't care to as long as it works.

SR101 is the same thing. 52100 with added Chromium?

Johannings Modified A8 steel is another supremely tough and wear resistant steel. And I think it has moderate chromium in it as well.

So does cpm3V,
It's no secret that Chromium helps in wear resistance. It's also no secret that Chromium can hurt. It is the blend of everything that is crucial and knowing how to HT it. The master knifemakers know this.

Guys like busse and Mike Stewart know how to HT well. They are masters at it.

:D
