Do you actually use your swiss army knives?

I have a pouch sheath strapped to my bag that is dedicated to (at least) a Tinker Deluxe and usually a Swiss Champ. I'd have to say that an SAK gets more use than any other EDC (and I use my knives a lot). Yes, I carry other knives in addition, but it's the SAK that sees more work time. No, not glamorous "he man" stuff, but the necessary aspects of a fairly physical lifestyle.

Some guys here are saying that they use their awl quite a bit. I would just like to know what you guys use your awl for, aside from punching holes on belts (specially the one on the Pioneer/Soldier). Thanks.

I use mine daily to clean under my nails.:o

They are great for scraping firesteels, but mine get used mostly for making pilot holes for screws. I've also used it for drilling holes in wood, kydex and other plastics.

Have you ever used the tip of your knife to poke a hole in something? Or wanted to poke a hole in something, except were concerned with tip damage or control?

That.

The thing about the awl is that the short length and placement give you a lot of precision control and hole poking power..

It's also useful if you just want to scratch something without necessarily cutting it.

It's also useful for LIGHT duty precision prying (think dental pick).

i use my SAKs all the time... i love them and have carry them for more than 25years... i rotate many models since i love many of its design... it just work and suits me perfectly.

For folks who ask what do you do with "this" or "that" tool? or say that they would never use "that" tool, I suggest that there are so many SAK combinations out there you are bound to find one that fits your lifestyle perfectly. For those who need, or want, a bigger knife, many SAK's make the perfect second knife. I can't tell you how useful mine have been and how they are all the knife I need most of the time. I only wish that Hard Alox knives weren't becoming so rare.

i use my sak damn near everyday as well. i carry the mechanic version and the pliers are handy to have. as a jeep guy something always needs tinkering and the screwdrivers and double blades make quick work of pretty much anything without digging around in the toolbox

I keep a deluxe Tinker in the computer bag and always take one with me when I travel (in my checked luggage). Recently i've bee carrying a rambler on the key ring.

Like someone else said, it's great for cleaning your fingernails and other random scraping jobs.

I've used a SAK a few times a day, on average, over the last twenty years.
It's a legitimate tool.

I like the Swiss Champ simply because it covers the tool bases.

I use my SAK every day for something. Over the weekend it opened a lot of beer bottles. Nothing slices an apple like a Vic Soldier.

Well I don't use it every day, but today it was handy to have it for helping out get some jewelry pieces a hole so that they can be hanged

I use the awl every day at work opening packages. Keeps the blade from getting gunked up with tape glue. Before I started using the awl, some days it looked like I dipped the knife in a rubber cement bottle.

I've carried a Eurosport 2 (nylon version of one of the Tinker models) every day for years. I use every tool almost daily except the reamer.

I use the small blade for opening packages - the blade gets a bit gunked up but I figure I can always clean it with a little isopropyl and I have the big blade if I want something clean for another task.
