Dog Knives

Hey there folks,

I have a job with a company that requires me to get into backyards frequently. With that comes a lot of contact with dogs in fenced in areas and others that are free range... That said, dog spray is not always effective and I am looking for additional protection if one decides to jump at me.

What I am looking for is a folding knife that can be clipped and be stored on the inside of my pocket (so it is concealed except for the clip) and one that I can open quickly, one handed, into reverse grip. This way I can use my forearm to protect me with the option of having a striking motion at the dog if it is lunges toward me.

I can't carry a big knife around on my belt because my company would not approve of it nor do I want to freak out people when I come on their property.

Anything out there? Thanks everybody.

My morals are usually against puppy killing but Emerson makes some great knives with wave features. The wave is a small hook on the spine of the blade near where the blade attaches to the handle portion of the knife. This wave shaped hook is supposed to catch on your pocket upon removal of the knife and automatically open the blade. If you don't feel like spending that much money you can check out Benchmade or Spyderco, both companies make excellent well priced knives.

i don't think that knifing someones dog when you have intruded on to their property (despite the fact they may have organised the visit through your company themselves) is likely to be good for business or your future with the company.
With that in mind you have the RIGHT to be protected from dog attacks when working for that company & those people.
It would make far more sense for your company to alert the housholders as to when you are visiting and have them present or the the dog absent.

Coldsteel spartan, rajah or espada series. These are all pocket knives that are big and can be waved from the pocket with one hand. They come with either an extra clip and/or all the clips can be reversed. If you are left handed then they are already set for a one handed opening into reverse grip. If you are right handed just put the pocket clip on the other side.

I think if you go stickin a knife in someones dog on their property your going to be in alot more trouble than you would expect. I know you would be if you stuck one of my dogs. Seriously either talk to the property owner first and have them put up the dogs or refuse to go on their land. As for free running dogs, spray is your best option to not get sued, fired, or shot.

good luck

ask me to secure the dog if you need (and I allow you) to have access
if you stab my dog in my yard you may get shot for your trouble

Haha, I work for an electric company and I have to get into people's backyards... whether they like it or not, with or without notification. We always knock on the door before going on someones property.

When people don't like it, upset landowners 'forget' to pen their dogs or have even let their dogs out on workers. Other times sheriffs have to sit on the front porch and keep the individual in their house after threaten behavior. (Refer to easements and utility companies having access to their property no matter where it resides.)

There are some crazy ass people out there.

I am not on the prowl to shank some dogs, but I would if one is jumping at me.

Thanks for the suggestions!!

It doesn't matter if your dog is tied, fenced in, have signs up or someone trespasses on your property, your dog kills someone, mauls someone, you get charged.

you still need right of way for access (our surveyors will never trespass without written consent which we mail to the client and adjacent property owners)
the only access you have right to is to read the meter, mine is outside the dog fence (6' high with wire so they can't dig under)
I have signs 'dog inside' with a picture of a dog (the real morons can't read)
in fact the utility requires the meter be easily accessible (not fenced) so they can read it or pull the meter for non-payment...
if you enter my property (and you aren't a cop) without my permission (other than the front porch, mailbox, etc.) you are going to be confronted..

if you think you can enter property that has no meter or utility equipment just becasue you work for a utility you are mistaken

Same issues with dog spray, I can miss and if it is close quarters I can't use the spray I have or a stun gun. Checking out the Coldsteal now! Thanks for the ideas!

I hear you mate. Lets face it there are people who should simply never be allowed to own dogs.
At the end of the day worker safety is paramount.
If uncooperative people are the problem I reckon there would be some law that provides for the removal of dangerous animals by the police
& the owners liable for the cost.

you can deny the utility right of access, eg, meter is not easily read from the front yard (not fenced), in the basement, etc.
they must be allowed access with written permission at least once every year or two...they can charge for this service
they can also obtain a warrant if required...
but you do not have to let them on your property, and you can tell them to leave, if they don't, it's trespass in most areas

Jesus you are going to stab the dog? How about wearing boots or something?? Maybe a baton? You could obviously kill a dog with a baton, but I think it would easier to fend one off, plus you would have more reach.

Anyhow this seems like a weak attempt at trolling... new user, first post is "recommend a knife to kill dogs with."

Two Pitbulls charged and started attacking my Pitbull. I was on my bicycle, my pit was on a leash attached to my waist. I have an ASP Baton on my Bike, pulled it off, and hit one of the dogs 3 times. Twice was on the back, since he did not stop, I hit a third time right on top of the head. I was using it upside down, not extended, and hit him with the mushroom cap that I had installed.
That dog reacted to that last hit, hunkered down and ran home, the second dog gave up and rolled over because I went after the leader.

I assume the dog lived, those people moved a week later. Point is, I didn't have to kill the dog, and yes I had a fixed blade on me if it had to go there.
