Dog Knives

Where I live the elec company has full access th their property (meter box etc). You also have to provide safe access to the front door ( acording to a local council ranger ).

In the short future , meters will be self reading , every minute or so from what I hear.

A leg of lamb or a big thick meaty bone in a mylar bag might get you further than a knife in your relations with the local canine population.

The only access any worker has to a yard is by "easement" - and it is governed by rules and obligations. I know few home owners who would fence an easement into their property. Cable techs are low voltage "trained apes".

that's correct, they only have access to their equipment, not your entire property, and you can deny access...
they have to read the meter once every year or so, and can charge extra...but you can deny access and they can't deny service...cable is lower teir than power, water, gas or sewer...

if you deny access beyond the regulations they can obtain a warrant/order...but they can't just call a cop and gain entry...due process...

as far as knife vs dog...easier said than done...
my training...wrap the weak arm, 'present' it to the dog (he will 'bite') once he's latched on, raise it and underhand stab to the throat and chest until he retreats or drops...

Hey there folks,

I have a job with a company that requires me to get into backyards frequently. With that comes a lot of contact with dogs in fenced in areas and others that are free range... That said, dog spray is not always effective and I am looking for additional protection if one decides to jump at me.

What I am looking for is a folding knife that can be clipped and be stored on the inside of my pocket (so it is concealed except for the clip) and one that I can open quickly, one handed, into reverse grip. This way I can use my forearm to protect me with the option of having a striking motion at the dog if it is lunges toward me.

I can't carry a big knife around on my belt because my company would not approve of it nor do I want to freak out people when I come on their property.

Anything out there? Thanks everybody.

Best suggestion I have for you is to let the homeowners know you are coming and knock on their front door when you get there. At my house, we have several dogs that go out and play in the yard. Someone is always home, everyone is armed and trains with their weapons, and attacking one of our dogs in their own fenced back yard will get you shot dead on the spot... no questions asked.

When I was a kid, my mom was sued cuz our German shepard bit a KID, not cable tech, not utility worker, a kid, running through our yard.

We lost. Those of you who act like your property is some sort of 12th century castle are up for a VERY rude awakening should something happen.

Fyi, you do anything to a person that kills your dog in self defense, on your property or not, my money's on you going to prison. But hey! Try it!

In Minnesota, if it can be reasonably proved that you could escape your house hold without serious injury in the event of a life threatening intruder, and you kill them you will be charged with murder. Take that case law and apply it to you defending your dog against a utility worker and see how ya fare

And another thing, most people have absolutely no idea what an easement is, much less where it is. I mean I've seen houses built on OTHER PEOPLE'S PROPERTY because they were wrong about the property lines. People are immensely stupid, and then they have a dog. Protect yourself op, you'll hear no grief from me.

I believe that the proper pepper spray will work. However, if not then a good knife for protection will work. I would want a 4 inch blade or a folder about like the Ontario RAT1.
I cannot imagine that Bear Spray would not work.

Regards,
Jerry

Lucky for me, I live in North Carolina, where we have a 'castle doctrine'.

"(a) A lawful occupant within a home or other place of residence is justified in using any degree of force that the occupant reasonably believes is necessary, including deadly force, against an intruder to prevent a forcible entry into the home or residence or to terminate the intruder's unlawful entry (i) if the occupant reasonably apprehends that the intruder may kill or inflict serious bodily harm to the occupant or others in the home or residence, or (ii) if the occupant reasonably believes that the intruder intends to commit a felony in the home or residence.

(b) A lawful occupant within a home or other place of residence does not have a duty to retreat from an intruder in the circumstances described in this section."

I'm sorry that you have to "escape" your own residence, but I do not. If -I- believe you are up to no good on my property, I can remove you from my property. Notice, the requirement is that -I- believe you are there to do harm, or commit a felony. That's all I need. And, case records prove that in my particular county (Surry), the castle doctrine is taken very seriously.

our dog bit an intruder (scaled our fence to take a look around)...the intruder was arrested, we got nothing
he sued our homeowners insurance and lost in arbitration

it is not self-defense if the person is commiting illegal tresspass (warned verbally, signage, or circumvented a locked gate, fence, etc.)

look up 'castle doctrine', in some states you can kill a tresspasser/intruder on your neighbors property (recently happened in TX) without consequence...

I do surveying, I know what an easement, set-back, right of way (conscriptive or documented), , etc.
what we are talking about here is 'right of access', although they do have a free 'right of way' to place their equipment in
I also do much work for utilities, and you can't enter property without permission unless by agreement (acceptance of service usually) and only within defined limits, eg, read the meter...he can't enter your fenced backyard if their is none of his equipment there...

people need to know their rights in order to excercise them
if I see a guy chasing my dog in my yard with a butcher knife I will shoot him...my defense: he was silencing the dog and was going after me next...he won't be able to refute it ;)

btw: you don't have to retreat in Minnesota, the law says no, but there have been contradictory rulings...
Minnesota: No duty to retreat before using deadly force to prevent a felony in one's place of abode; no duty to retreat before using deadly force in self defense in one's place of abode. This isn't as clear as it appears, however. There are four cases in Minnesota where duty of retreat was upheld.

probably the emerson puppystabber. I personally use a satchel of dynamite, though.

Perhaps something like a Koga SD/2 would be less violent? It's what I carry when walking my Mom's dog. I'd think even pepper spray or a stun gun is just begging to get sued (whether justified or not), let alone stabbing someone's dog outright. Picture someone finding their dog spasming on the ground or with burning orange goo all over their face. At least with a kubotan you're still in "I was just hitting it to get it off me" territory.

But to answer the question maybe a small CS Ti-Lite? Just pull it out of your pocket with the snag and it's open and ready to stab dogs. A Rajah seems, well... maybe if you want to decapitate it :/

Kershaw Chive, Scallion, Leek. They have amazingly fast assisted openings and aren't very expensive. But, I would still say go the Baton route.

Stabbing a dog usually isn't my cup of tea, but for all my puppy slaughtering needs I use a fixed blade, either my Rat 3 or my Meyerco DP Wharning.

But I agree with dfkdfk, get a baton. More reach, less likely to kill the dog. I have a S&W 21" collapsible baton and it is great. Best thing is that you put it on your hip and it looks like a flashlight or some sort of tool, no one thinks differently.

I actually got attacked by a dog clearing a house in Iraq.. long story but I finally found a use for my 9mm sidearm.

Didnt live that one down for a while....

Just thought about it, but you can get a baton-taser. They are often used for vicious dogs.

This to me looks like the best option. Sure, have your knife as a fallback, but I would not go for the knife before a baton or ha wrench/hammer. Not just talking laws or consideration for the dog, I've always believed a baton to be better for self defense than a knife.

Is this serious? Any kind of large, aggressive dog is not what you want to be using a kubaton on.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the company might not be down with you putting a knife in their client's dog. Taser, perhaps?
