Dog "Ownership"?

own, I also don't joke about using real human friends/family members for target practice

I prefer not to waste what little brain power I have on trying to figure out if I own my dog.

I have 2 dogs. One is 5lbs and is sweetest cutest thing on earth. It's flat out sad what I'd do to protect her. Fortunately I have a 110lb German Shepherd who thinks she's his girlfriend so he'll take care of protecting her.

cute looking dog there.... pits make great family dogs.... i have a friend that has 2 pits, they are some the coolest, most obedient dogs i have ever met....

i love my dog.. TIMBER... she's half rotwieler and half lab.... she is family for sure... i would do just about anything for her.. as a matter of fact, we already have... she has had 5 surgeries already in her ripe old age of 6... and she's been sprayed by skunks 3 times.... she is very smart and listens well... she protects my house and family like there's no tommorow... when my 4 y.o. old son was born, she wouldn't let anyone come around him that she didn't know......:o she would just sit next to him.... we live behind another house and have a long driveway(see pic).. if i'm home, she just hangs out outside and lays in the sun.....

we also have 2 cats, but i've never cared for cats much.... what's a cat going to do if someone breaks in....

Good looker...looks like the lower-half is Rottie and the upper is Lab:) .

I'm actually rather fond of cats...I enjoy their "FU" attitude.

I have two Golden Retrievers. Mother and son. Do I "own" them? Legally, yes. Are they family? Certainly. Spoiled? Yes. They spend their nights on the water bed and their days on the easy chair or the carpeted floor. Trained? Highly! The male is a great hunter too. I am alpha in the house and they know it. I am as others stated, responsible for them. I provide them with good food, water, exercise, a warm bed and a loving family. That's the way it's supposed to be when you choose to take a dog into your home and your life.

As Puuko said I am the alpha male in my pack, I do however own my dogs, I do not let them roam free and it is my responsiblity to care for them. Chris

I was a bit nervous about her being half Pit and watched her like a hawk when she was around the kids for the first few weeks but shes as gentle as can be.

Pitbulls despite their image are people oriented dogs, for 200 years they've been breed to fight dogs and NOT bite people even in the heat of the combat. Check pitbullforumdotcom for more info.

Pits are great dogs but they tend to be dog aggressive which means once they become adults it might be difficult to keep them with other dogs. Every serious pit owner will tell you that. I love the breed but if you have several dogs you have to watch with hawkeyes. By the way pits are late blomers, they become adults when they are over 2 years old, so even a relaxed dog might become dog aggressive at an older age.

Please also differentiate between aggression and gameness. A game pit might not be aggressive at all, Dibo (one of the great ones) was for example very easygoing with other dogs until challenged. My own is fairly OK with other dogs but if she smells a challenge god help the other dog, she doesn't start fights she finishes them. I have four dogs, this means my pit has to be kept separate from two of the four because anything else would mean a dog fight.

We consider our Maligator to be a family member.

As far as pits, any dog that is ill bred or not taken care of properly can be mean enough to do damage. A good pit or pit mix that is properly trained and loved is a great dog. Same for any breed.

I OWN my dogs. I love them, feed them, play with them, and when the time comes I kill them. They are great companions, and sources of comfort and joy, but I never lose sight of the fact that they are dogs. And here is a shot of one my babies, Otis Grottle. He is a big 'ole sweet honey bear, unless you happen to be an animal. He is a people dog, NOT an animal dog. He gets along with his yardmates just fine, but strange critters are NOT welcome. He is my walking partner, fishing companion, and good friend.

My life does not allow me to have another dog and aI am still grieving for the last two. Maybe when I am too old to left alone.

Whiskey River. I own him, I train him, I am responsible for him.

He works (like a dog) for me for about 5 months during season and then gets an extended vacation each year. He hasn't complained once.

Ask how that compares to my wife.

Sorry to hear about the underdeveloped sense of humor.:D

You guys have a alot of good looking dogs, loving the pics.

I think I need to clarify about the pitbull thing. I have no problem with them at all, I just know they can be aggressive players when their puppies. All dogs can, but even as puppies, pits can have devistatingly powerfull jaws and I've had bites bad enough to break the skin just playing tug o war with a friends pit puppies.

I never really worried about Chloe attacking the kids, shes very gentle, but she plays like a hellhound.

This is Carrie, our latest edition to the family. My girlfriend and I went and picked her up on the weekend, shes all ready fit in and can sit and knows to pee out side at 6 weeks!!!
