EDC Work or Weapon?

In the time it would take to get a pocket knife from my pocket - and deploy it's blade, be it an SAK, assisted opener, or even a full auto, I'd likely have cleared my right hand pocketed S&W 642 or 296 and probably emptied same. I would never try to defend myself with a pocket knife if something louder and with a greater range were available - which it usually is. I legally carry (Alabama is a 'shall issue' state for CCL.) that 642 in my shorts pocket even when I am cutting grass! My knives are tools - meant to carve non-living stuff - unless I am hungry.

Last week - at a local grocers on the outskirts of Birmingham - two butchers got into a work related knife fight... and one died. I don't need to know the details... thoughts of swinging cleavers is enough - barf!

Any advice for those of us who can't carry? Concealed or otherwise?

"Run" tops my list, but I'd like a Plan B and C if that doesn't pan out.

Where I live (in Rhode Island) carrying a knife as a "weapon" is pretty much illegal by the text of the law, and ever using it in a self defense capacity would probably end exceedingly poorly for you if the other person wasn't similarly armed. For me, at 5'11" and 120 lbs, I pretty much accept that I will just get my ass kicked because a knife would just land me in prison in a fight. The only time you can use a knife in SD here is if someone is threatening you with lethal force, which conversely means if you pull a knife on someone, they're allowed to shoot you with a gun. Not that I ever really entertained the idea of carrying a knife as weapon (I would probably end up dead), but you really don't have the option here anyway. So mine is pure utility use.

Definitely as a tool, I can´t think about it as a weapon. For defense I use a Kubotan or pepper spray. But here in Germany it´s a little bit safer than in the US, I think. I prefer slipjoints, however. So the blade needs more time getting opened than using it for a real defense weapon.

Kind regards

http://nononsenseselfdefense.com/ read this,

It talks about SD before the need to fight. Things like being aware of those around you and general people skills that will keep you (and me) out of trouble. It actually talks about a ton of stuff the should be plan "A" before the fight starts.

Maybe it's because we have palm trees here, but I haven't found a club or stick anywhere when walking to work the past 3 years. And not having a lot of construction going on, I haven't found a decent sized brick or rock either. I might have come upon the occasional beer bottle, but nothing consistent enough to say I could find one "easily", much less when I need it. I also don't think the thug looking to mug me is going to wait a few minutes for me to search for one before demanding my wallet.

Just sayin'.

I guess I started saying that some years back when we had "violence in the workplace" meetings where I work and some folks started in on people who carried knives at work.

At the time I EDC'ed in a belt pouch. I would look around me and pick a few things out which would make an even better weapon than my knife and could always find a few thing you could bludgeon with.

'Course I WAS in a familiar environment. I could see that that might not be the case if you were being mugged in an unfamiliar place.

I suppose that I could look for one while I ran.

at work I'm in a safe environment working with great people. i don't deal with customers so its a tool at work. a tool at home. a tool in my car.

it IS however a weapon everywhere and anywhere else. i have had numerous situations spending time in newark and subways where sometimes running or escape is not a option. so my defensive plan and routine is to dress casually and never draw added attention to myself. always pay with the 20-25 dollars in my front pocket and never display a wallet. and never look like you have or are carrying valuables via watch or jewelry, and if i am they are covered up. but i have however been in 2 situations a knife even though undeployed did provide me with added protection if the situation escalladed

-an incident where a black male opened the car door while i was stopped at a light with intent to rob or harm. before he could grab the gps or open his mouth i grabbed his wrist above the joint bent his arm back and sent him to the ground without a weapon handheld him in that position for 1-2 seconds until i could get the car in gear and leave.

-was meeting a friend to study late at night after dark on campus to in newark. when i turned the corner of a building i saw my friend i was meeting on his back with a black male on top of him and i ran towards him yelling and the black male ran off with only his wallet and not his life.

i would never pull the out a knife unless ready to end a life and that will most likely never happen because i don't want a deployed knife to be counted with a gun which i can't carry in jersey.

my plans is situations are

- if i can avoid and escape do it. if i can't stay calm and quiet
- distance = security
- if i do have to fight to walk away from the situation I'm not looking to have a movie style fight. your fighting for your life so fight dirty and save yourself and your own life

My knives are tools first, toys second, cool to look at third, followed by any other possible use, and weapons dead last. If I have to use a knife to defend myself it would be a last resort.

I carry a RAT-3 or ESEE-3 for EDC. I mainly carry for utility, but I unfortunately think I should compromise utility by having the sharpened clip point for defensive purposes (I sharpened the top of my RAT-3 myself). Of course, I do carry a firearm (usually two), but the edged tool is there on my weak side should I need it.

My EDC is not a weapon in my eyes- I wouldn't even know how to use it in such a way.:p I mean, I have an idea, but no actual , practical application, thank God.

My Glock 17 is my primary weapon, my SOG multitool is my primary tool. My Kershaw MBK and waved Spyderco are more weapons than tools, but I use the Kershaw every day for mundane chores like cutting boxes, string, and food.

My knife is a tool all the time, always ready to work. Would I consider it a "last ditch self-defense tool"? Damn right I do, if the situation has reached the point where I am about to die/be maimed/curb-stomped by multiple persons/eaten by a (insert any one of the numerous animals that can kill me here)/attacked by somebody's pissed off and unleashed dog/etc...

If it's last resort and my knife provides a chance of life - I will try to live.

Ultimately each person should make their own choice about what they will do if (God forbid) that time ever comes. I've had to draw my pistol on someone. Fortunately, the situation de-escalated quickly and I didn't have to use it. I hope and pray the day never comes when I have to shoot anything more than a paper target or can.

I couldn't agree more. You might need it for protection someday but thatd be the absolute last resort. Even then I think pulling a knife out could make quite a few situations worse. Just my 0.02!

I don't know how to answer that lol... I carry more tactical blades than anything else, so I guess weapon first, but then again, I don't live in a dangerous area, so I'm not really expecting to need it... I just like carrying big, scary knives for some odd reason.:)

Recently purchased a fireman's axe..for no real reason...would make a impressive and scary home defense weapon....6 pound axehead with a spike on the other side....zombies beware!!!!!

As a ninja, I am a human weapon. So, I carry my EDC knife for work purposes. (Just kidding about the "ninja" part)

In the right light a toothbrush can be a weapon. So its all preference, as well as the need to save ones life or one others life, should the unfortunate occasion arise.

If you're going to be prepared, then assume you'll be in a gun fight. Wherever I can carry a knife, I can also carry a gun.
