Flipper Friday!

A day behind in posting. Got home last knight just in time for whiskey, shower, and bed; then up at 6 again this morning and just recently back home. Thursday my son and I went on one of our favorite hikes, up to a glacier fed Alpine Lake. We clocked about 12 miles in total, with about 3,500 in elevation gain. We hiked up and spent a couple hours at the lake, and just had to cool off by taking a dip (more like a cold shock plunge) in the emerald green waters. Had our fill of wild berries and the bison jerky that I brought along, dried off relaxing on the rocks (my son took a quick nap), explored around the lake, and headed back down picking more berries along the way. Amazing experience!

I still have to get the pics up for today's outing, so I'll post those later or perhaps in the morning.

I seriously had 25-30 times this much. They were so plentiful, and perfectly ripe. I usually bring an apple as my fruit for a hike, but today I knew there would be no need.

The peak before heading back down into the lake is more of a plateau, where the trees thin due to elevation and there are little meadows like this one. It was just calling for me to lay there and relax for a bit. Who am I to argue? ;)

I always enjoy your scenic pics…with a little side-helping of jealousy tossed in, lol (my wife and I keep saying we’re gonna get a place in the mountains, but this whole “life” thing keeps finding a way to jack up our plans). I can’t imagine a better way to spend a day with family. Absolutely gorgeous.

Anyway, I’m just curious; on hikes like this do you typically run into other hikers? Is that a popular spot? Seems to me a lake setting that beautiful would be bustling with day trippers…..or is it fairly private, maybe seasonal?

Finding a secret and beautiful spot in nature is it's own reward!

I am glad about this new hollow-ground Cruwear in the form of the new Yo2 (great, smooth G-10 handles as well, feel like I should swap out the hardware with the blacked-out hardware on my 20CV Yo2. With Boker USB and Vic Tinker 84mm (small). Just found out my Boker is USA made!

Thanks!

It depends, but I do try to avoid crowds as much as possible. First and foremost, I tend to mostly go on weekdays which makes a big difference. This is a trick that I learned from the beach and river at my hometown back in Florida. I do make exceptions of course, whenever the wife wants to go on a weekend for example (because unlike me she has the schedule of a functioning member of society 🤣), but for the most part I avoid the typical weekend/holiday crowds. I also try to go fairly early. This can be difficult sometimes, particularly on a hike like this where the trailhead was 2.5 hrs from home, but I do my best. Then, difficulty and distance really does a good job of thinning the herd. Once you get above 8 miles or so of moderate to difficult steep incline, the sane people start to let their better judgment prevail. Another trick that I particularly love, is to find old alternate trails that are no longer maintained up to locations. One of our favorite hikes up to a lake is fairly popular, but we found the old trail (much more steep and technical, but also much more fun and interesting) which leaves us having the entire hike to ourselves save the occasional person in the know. Finally, there is just so much to explore in this state, and so many great locations, that even the amazing places like this one don't get too overcrowded. For example, while we were at this lake, there were probably 4-5 other groups that came and went while we were there, and just a few more that we passed coming and going, so all in all it was still fairly secluded.

Now for today's outing. I decided to go for a viewpoint hike today rather than a lake or waterfall, as I figured it would be hard top the lake hike yesterday. I headed out towards Rainier, to an old fire outlook with some breathtaking views.

To get an idea of my destination, here's a view from the trailhead below, which was already 40min or so up a mountain road

zoomed in you can see the outlook from afar

The peak is a little daunting at first, rather exposed, but a stunning view of both Rainier and the entire surrounding area.

The pics really don't do the experience of being up there justice, but some panorama shots can help give you an idea

What is this knife? It is a very, very appealing shape in comparison to the majority of the Ti framelocks I see out there, and I don't know if it is the picture, but it seems just a smidge longer than the usual, I really like this one.
Not my post but it’s a Spartan Harsey, they come in 2 sizes 3.25” or 4”. I’ve heard nothing but great things, loved the ones I coon fingered at Blade last year. I have a feeling the plague doctor harsey may be up your alley, if you can find one.

That lookout is on the tip of my tounge and I can’t remember the name. I’ve always wanted to go hike that one. Been to the Fremont lookout in Sunrise numerous times. Just something about old time fire lookouts that are so cool.

👍. Large SHF. Build seems to be great, though I only have one. I usually pair it with something with a thinner slicier grind.

Renegade Provisions Co. / Gungnir
If you like a large knife, get one of these.
Made by Reate and designed by Chris Rossiter, Renegade's owner...Outstanding knife!
They come with a wire clip (shown here) and a milled titanium clip, which I also have.
Specs.: Bl. Steel, M390 / Bl. Length, 4.25" (w/a 4" cutting edge) / OAL, 9.34" / Weight, 6.9 oz.
I took this one apart and buffed the ti. liners/bolsters, back-spacer and clip.
Reate did a GREAT (as usual) job with milling and fit and finish...attention to detail with both.
Razor sharp out of the box.
Chris, the designer/owner is a Great guy to deal with!

More picts. of this knife in the Knives & Coffee forum.
Thanks for looking and for any likes this knife may receive.
