Elusive Schrades

Real nice one, Hal! Elusive in that condition for sure!!

Just wanted to say to Charlie and Hal and many others here how much I've been enjoying this thread in the recent past. Thank You to all that have contributed in here!

This will be my first post in here I believe though. A (3) line tang stamp: SCHRADE {over} CUT CO. {over} WALDEN, NY. on a four blade scout pattern in dark brown jigged bone I have had forever, or so it seems. Perhaps one of you fine chaps can enlighten me on age if you're a mind too..

Interesting knife, Anthony! You could almost call that bone "Rodgers Bone"! It also looks like the jigging that Camillus used quite frequently in their good old days.
I would bet that is a subcontract by Camillus for Schrade! Camillus made a very similar knife for Case for years!!
Nice possible "missing link"! :D

Here is some of that Camillus jigging;

The colors vary, but the jigging is real close, IMO.

I have looked further, and haven't found that jigging on other Schrade Cut Co knives yet, Anthony. Interesting piece!
Perhaps someone can date it for you? Without a shield, I suspect it was issued during WWII, but I'm no expert about military knives.
Where's Mike Silvey when you need him??

Here is a nice example of a purpose-built knife with Schrade DNA.

"Charlie, I was perusing your Elusive Schrades thread again this morning and one comment and photo reminded me of this knife I have had for some time.
No doubt Schrade made the knives for Langbien who sold them to Hoe, who made printing presses."

Thanks Mark! I wonder if Langbein did that nice reverse etch??

Another great knife from Mark, a rare C2533 3/4 SQ.
At 3 1/16" long, it is a mini version of a 2203 3/4 which is 3 1/2" long.
Here's Mark's knife - a beauty!

The middle knife here is the 2203 3/4 I referred to above, along with its cousins, a 2202 on the left, and a later 2OT on the right.

Charlie, isn't the jigging on that 2203 interesting how it's jigged with an even-angled pattern base and then with a even-straight pattern over that. I've seen that before but just now noticed how obvious it was on that knife.

I'd like to see the machine and process that did that jigging, Kerry.
You may have seen it in post #125 in this thread - it appears to be the third in a series of jigging patterns that Schrade used to differentiate itself from the competition.
I think of it as their "basketweave" pattern. In evenly done pieces, it looks very much like a weave.

Ahhh yes...there it is. It looks as though the pieces were ran thru the magic jiggin machine twice. ;)

Fortunately, that knife of mine was used a fair bit, but carefully George.
Great handles on yours!!! Best I've seen!!!
I saw a couple of Schrade pen blades for sale recently on the "bay"!?

Diamond Edge C836 - A Schrade contract knife for Shapleigh Hardware Company. Likely dates in the mid-late 1940's or early 1950's. 4" stockman pattern. Other than some surface tarnish it is in excellent condition for an old knife. Great peachseed.

Crocus polished front with Diamond Edge etch

Centered blades, hard snap, excellent craftsmanship

Nice pair, it goes nice with with the 883. A slim profile with the Turkish clip, spey, and punch.

Great find, Hal! That knife looks unused!
Whoa Momma!!!

While this one is not as old as most of the knives in this thread, I think it is pretty elusive.

Schrade Walden 8OT

First edition of the classic 8OT, came out in 1961 I believe along with the 2OT.

I believe this was the pre-release flyer from 1960 for the first two Old Timers.

Hal you've been finding some exceptional knives !
i had thought that the 8OT was first issued in 1958, but since you state 1960, likely that is correct. Not only are you a great 'knife finder', but also a well researched 'Knife Academic'. Pretty soon you'll be joining Charlie and have your 'Vintage Schrade Doctorate'.

That's some truly great looking knife. Congratulations.
