Elusive Schrades

Charlie, that is one very nice group of knives..wow!!,...I think those knives are probably a bit more scarce than what I realise, and yet even I can see that they are very, very nice knives ...
they are simply wonderfull knives!!... the bone- ( wow the bone, and Stag-yet alone the lovely jigging ), the very cool design work on the liners, and the nice swedges...(I like how the light has highlighted them in the photo) - whew!...for small knives, they pack a mean punch Charlie!

"Who was the reporter, Roland? "
Don't know. Heard this on an old CBC radio interview many years ago.

So, is that one bone or stag? At first I thought bone, but now I'm conflicted. Maybe deluded, not sure. They are all gems for sure.

I am getting Emails claiming Stag, and claiming Bone!!
I also posted in BRL's forum, so far without conclusion.
Here are two more close-ups.

I wish DNA tests were not so expensive!!

Charlie, if I had to bet, I'd say it was jigged "second cut" stag, dyed with a strong solution of PP - enough to oxidize and "age" the surface, erasing/eroding most marks of the jigging. The patterning is just too much of a match for good bone jigging style for me to think it could be straight natural patterned stag.

I agree with Dwight. Obviously jigged, and I've never heard of jigged stag other than second cut.

Ithas been suggested that Scottish Red Deer has a finely textured antler. Here's an example;

I'm still in a quandry about the material in these knife handles. A couple of experienced knifemakers have viewed them, and declared them to be Stag!!

And here is an antler I borrowed (the pic - thanks, Robin!) from pipeman, displaying a gnarly section that has that "jigged" look, but is natural - Ontario Whitetail!!

Schrade made knives for Shapleigh Hardware under the Diamond Edge brand, both before and after WWII.
Here is a later one - 1950s-1960s maybe - when Schrade was modernizing their production methods.
From the Schrade Walden period may I present a rare 4-blade Cattle knife. I bought it from the original owner, and under a glass it has a few tiny specks of corrosion, and a bit of patina, but it is one of the closest to the original - untouched and unused you will ever see!

Thanks Elliott. I thought your Cattle knife propensity would be attracted to it . . .your avatar being one clue!;)
Ken - you are up next!:D

Another beauty, Charlie. Proclivities aside, you have all eventualities covered with that blade selection.

Charlie,

What a great addition to your collection!
Certainly packed a lot of blade in that frame. And all very useful to boot.

Thanks for sharing,

That is an outstanding knife. Sporting a dandy clip blade!:thumbup:On observation, it looks like the clip has a Camillus/Ulster looking swedge.

It sure would go really well up next to my DE stockman you know. ;)

Why not post that Stockman again for comparison, Hal?!

All ready for Blade, Ken??

Glad you like it, Jeff!!
