Elusive Schrades

Why not post that Stockman again for comparison, Hal?!

This one has more of a turkish clip. Makes it kind of streamlined.

Shown here alongside a Walden 883 with a regular clip point.

Bretheren for sure! Thanks for the reminder, Hal!! That's a grade A Stockman!

Mike Silvey wrote a book called "Pocket Knives of the United States Military".
In it, he pictures three-blade Cattle knives, many without shields, which he theorizes were issued to the Army Air Corps pilots during WWII.
I wonder if this could be one of them. He does not list this manufacturer. Its condition (unused, with slight patina) makes me think "recently discovered surplus" - - - - -hmmmmmmm!?

This one is "excellent, unsharpened" to use BRL's description often referred to as mint/near mint.
I shall send Mike Silvey a pic and see what he says.

Charlie, are the bolsters/liners steel (magnetic)?

That would be another point in favor of it having been made for the military...

Yes they are, Elliott. Very similar to a Case that you have;)!
Didn't you talk to Mike Silvey about that one?

Yes, I noticed the similar lineage despite the different name on the tang. The Imperial and Case versions are very similar to your example.

I believe I was in touch with Mike, BRL and especially Frank Trzaska.

Here's an excerpt from an email conversation I had with Frank on the topic back then:

"These were made by Camillus, Utica, Imperial / Kingston as well just off the top of my head. These were knives used in the Emergency Sustenance Kits, (the word Survival was not is use in WW II, another war, another time) for parachutist use if they needed to bail out."

Ahhh! Thanks for the beam of light on the subject, Elliott!!
Frank T. is a dedicated Military cutlery researcher, and has loads of real information! We're lucky to have him around.
This knife has steel bolsters, and a steel center liner, but brass scales. The mix hints at military also, versus civilian sales competition. That said, it's very nicely made - crisp and snappy with nice grinds and a glaze finish. A utilitarian joy to CF and CE!:D

You're welcome, Charlie. Sure looks like a great knife to me all around.

They just don't make peachseed bone like they used to. Blades been cleaned up some but in great shape. Zero blade play after 60+ years.

Just bumping up this thread to inspire anyone hiding a nice Schrade, to post it, or send me pics, so I can post them!
Don't be shy - drag them out of their hiding places!!:D

Charlie,

I always enjoy seeing new posts here in this thread. This is one of my favorite threads here in traditional's. Always look forward to seeing these cool knives.

My apologies for quoting Hals photos for my own personal rave here folks....Just take a good look at that jigging!!...I ( personally ) have only two knives that are that good with this style of jigging, a Shrade Walden peached bone, and my little Shapliegh, to see jigging on this sized knife - in the same style of jig work....is just WOW factor.

Thanks Hal for showing this great knife....actually..no...I take back that thanks as it has me wishing for yet ANOTHER knife, .so ...no, no thanks to any of you ..
:D

I have to say I was pretty excited to find a Schrade Cut Co utility knife with a cool shield and the well preserved handles. You might have to make me an offer I can't understand Duncan...
