Elusive Schrades

Charlie, Great looking knives (as always) like them all!
That "Diamond Edge" really does it for me....:D
Thanks for sharing.

Jason

Beautiful knives, thanks for showing them.
I particularly like the one with the spear point blade. I'm on a real spear-point-with-a-swedge kick lately, so thanks for the fix :D

I also appreciate the jiggibg that is scaled to the smaller knife. That tells me that there was some craftmanship and attention to detail paid when the knives were made.
It would be all to easy (and economical) to just jig bone in bulk and fit it to whatever knife.

Charlie, That old Schrade EO-TD is in fantastic looking shape. Typically I am not a big fan of celluloid but that one is just strait up gorgeous!. I am not sure I could be prevented from sneaking that one into the watch pocket of my jeans either! :) A really great example.. BTW, Isn't that what was termed Honey & Molasses cell or some such?

Duncan, that four blade senator-pen is a real sweet piece! I love those small vintage multi-blade slipjoints that function on only two back-springs. Just another reason to admire the talents of the old expert cutlers.

Best,
Anthony

Sorry, Anthony - I missed your question last time I was here. Butter and Molasses is a more modern name I think. I'm away from my books, but I don't think it was used in Schrade's old catalogs. Hal knows these things! Hal??:D

The knives in this thread make me smile. The bone in this thread makes me smile until I am sore from doing it.

I was asleep at the switch.

I don't think Schrade Cutlery ever used the term Butter & Molasses. Other companies might have. In the old Schrade Cut Co catalogs they were a bit more elegant, and called this celluloid "Brown Lined Cream Pyralin" (sounds edible!). It was used on switchblades, fishtails, jacks, stockman, and pen knives... probably more patterns than not. They called it K-Horn later on, even after they did a delrin type knock-off that was not nearly as pretty. The old Butter and Molasses cellluloid was also used by Camillus and Western Cutlery too. Probably some other companies as well.

There is a nice fat 3" jack, sort of a reverse peanut, I would love to have with this handle material.

Nice to know one can depend on people smarter than one's self! Thanks Hal!!

Well, I was given the opportunity to select some knives from a Schrade collection which was being sold off. Not the cheapest knives, but some nice ones. Here are two of them:
A nice 3 1/8" pearl handled jack. On the handles, there is some of that yellow patina that pearl gets from aging, but I think the blades were lightly cleaned.

The second is a 3 1/16" EE EO Jack in excellent condition.

A cool little single spring pen knife, that tooted Schrade Cut Co's horn.
With it, a thunder clap - snap - TD Jack. Some honest patina, I'm carrying that baby around today, with pleasure!!

There are ten knives in all. I'll post two more today, and the rest soon. I am on a knife collector's buZZ!

I thought I was done collecting Cattle knives, and sold a few of them away. But then these beauties showed up. Couldn't pass them up!
One is from a very limited time when Schrade tried its hand at marketing Stainless Steel pocketknives. All three blades are marked with a large "SS". Not too common.
Its brother is a D-E Shapleigh marked knife, but of course, made by Schrade Cut. Co.

Yeah, hard to pass something like those two up. Beautiful cattle knives, I really like the Cut Co with the spear, sheep and pen.

Thanks, Hal and BLMbass!
Here are two more of the collection - a 4blade Stag Pen with tips, and a Pearl whittler.

Glad you enjoy them Duncan! I obviously can't get enough of that Peachseed!
Here are the last two; a Fisherman's knife, and a big Stockman, both from the Walden era, with that dark reddish peachseed bone.

Recent acquisition, a late 1940's vintage serpentine jack knife. 294 pattern, 3 7/8" closed length.

Schrade Walden NY stamps on both blades, double pinned bomb shield, 4 pins on the back. Lovely old peachseed bone, and used just enough to justify giving it a carry this week.

Thanks for these ...Charlie and Hal!! That 4 blade Stag pen with tips...wow! I also love the peach seed jigging on some of those beauties.

That's really nice Hal. I have to wonder how you keep finding these gorgeous old knives? :)
